  2. Started by Spence,

So, the other day I saw Darren Watts post about his podcast Explain This Comics Guys. Up till this point every podcast I ever tried have been horrifically bad. If they managed to touch on anything actually interesting, usually by accident, it is usually quickly buried under pathetic attempts at humor. But ETCG was a pleasant surprise. It covered an actual topic with the information delivered in a concise and intelligent manner. Any commentary actuality applied and reinforced the presentation. So here I am. This is posted in the General Roleplaying forum because that is what I'm looking for. A good informative podcast…

Again, not my book, not my group, just posting in case someone is looking. As alway…

  4. Puffin Forest has posted and extensive review of the Second Edition of Paizo’s Pathfinder rules. In terms of crunch. It is a step away from the simplicity of D&D 5e, and that may have been a problem for him and his two game groups. I. Was mentally comparing his analysis to how gaming used to be, to how it is now. See what you think of this

  7. Hello everyone. Over at High Rock Press we will be releasing two new projects, detailed in a blog posting you can access here. The first is a new roleplaying game called Breakdown by Wilson Zorn, author of the ENnie-nominated RPG At The Hands of an Angry God. (It was nominated for Best Rules opposite D&D 5E. So we didn't, you know, win.) We will be releasing it chapter-by-chapter in the blog so gamers can comment on it before we begin a Kickstarter project to create a quality version on both physical and electronic form. The second project is a Descended From The Queen storytelling card game created by myself, inspired by the work of Alex Roberts, and published by Evi…

  9. Long story short: a player in my latest campaign (high Medieval-themed fantasy) would like to play a pre-teen mage focused around direct-damage spells. In all the time I've ran tabletop games, I have never had anyone request to play a character who has yet to reach adulthood. Some might think that, with the staggering amount of unorthodox dramatis personae out there in the wider gaming community, reaching a decision on so mundane a concept would be trivial. Some might think that; I thought that. After all, I enjoy fiction where the protagonist - or at least one of the protagonists - is an unusually talented/skilled youth that either shakes up the establishment or takes up…

  12. Started by Pariah,

I kept getting ads in my social media feed for a role-playing game called Amazing Tales, advertised as a game for kids four years or older and their parents. So yesterday I went over to Drive Through RPG and bought the PDF version for $6. It looks like a lot of fun. The basic idea is this: Choose a setting--a magical kingdom, a starship, a pirate ship on the high seas, whatever. Have your kid(s) make a character by choosing a name and describing what the character looks like. Then have the kid determine four things the character can do well--sailing a ship, finding hidden things, swordfighting, whatever. There is no skills list in the game; the skills are what…

I am preparing a mini-campaign for a D&D 5e game using Sandy Petersen's Cthulhu Mythos. The location is a Norse style settlement that is sized as a large village or small town set on a fjord or coastal area. Cold, dreary with heavy wooded inland areas (think 13th Warrior). While the adventure is nearly complete, I have all the who's, what's and why's. But I would like to have a map for the players. I have found plenty of villages and towns, but nothing that has the period style long houses (?) or halls. I've tried online and DriveThruRPG without success. I was hoping someone here could point me in the right direction. I'm fully willing t…

  14. So, my topic title is “Ships as locations instead of characters”. The first thing I should do is try to explain what I mean by that, and then solicit some opinions. I’ll start my thoughts by asking some questions about an inn. If you are running a fantasy sword swinger, you know, warriors and wizards and rogues and such, and they come across an inn on their travels. Do you go to the Vehicles and Bases section of the rules and stat out the inn? Or do you sketch/draw out a floor plan and list some NPC names and short descriptions and then run on the fly? That is what I do. I may fill in more detail if the party stays there for a while. …

Just wondering if anyone has heard of Legend Keeper, a new personal wiki-style world-building tool for Game Masters that's in beta right now and being developed by a guy named Braeden. I just read on his patreon page that he quit his full time job to continue development of the tool. I'm very excited about it and considering supporting the project. I'm pretty sure it's not system-specific in anyway (though a lot of the promotional material seems geared towards fantasy settings) so it would be of interest to the HERO community.

[This thread is a continuation of another.] --- The rules of this thread are simple -> You first choose a topic typical of tabletop gaming such as "Dragon", "Battle at Sea", "Paladin's Mount", or "Unorthodox Treasure". I prefer topics centered around the fantasy genre, but I am not opposed to those associated with science-fiction, superheroes or even the "mundane" world of action/adventure films. Then, you describe what each topic would look like if tailored for a low level, a mid level, and a high level adventure; you can be as serious/funny/brief/elaborate as you wish. Feel free to be abstract...so long as you are at least s…

  17. I've been dragging through old notebooks (the paper kind, with a metal coil on one side and these weird graphite scrawlings all over them) to complete something I promised myself I would do as I had time (almost done, Chris! ) I stumbled across something a few minutes ago--- How many of you other old men remember way, way back when-- about the late 70s or so, when if you needed a module on the cheap or between getting one from the brand-name guys, you pulled it out of a magazine? No modules that month? Well there's that rack of Judge's Guild stuff way in the back of the store..... Dude, Judge's Guild was _awesome_ way back when, especially…

Ascendant is a new superhero RPG being Kickstarted by Autarch. I don't know about the mechanics since at first glance it appears to be a percentile system with very large numbers, both of which are turn-offs for me. But the art is fantastic and I've been impressed with ACKS, so there's that. Anyway nobody seems to be discussing it and I thought that the superhero fans here might find it interesting. There is a free preview if you are interested in the rules: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/autarch/ascendant/posts/2773764 From the preview, it uses a logarithmic point-buy method that I have long felt would be a improvement if it were adopted by Hero. That i…

  20. Started by Anaximander,

I am in a debate with a friend. I like playing games like Star Wars, Star Trek, and other franchised universes. I like playing and running those universes because they are pre-built and recognizable, but I also like to play around and twist stories to my own liking. I see no problem, but my friend has the feeling that changing too much and it will no longer be that universe. To some degree, I think he is right, but to what degree? How much can you change Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel, or whatever before it stops being what it and becomes it is. I personally think that is a personal opinion and in roleplaying games it should come down to group consensus regardless of …

I love D6 games in general going back to the WEG SW game. Has anyone played the 2 games I mentioned in the title? What was your experience like with them? Would you recommend them?

  22. Started by Crazyleo,

I was introduced to Heroes way back in 3rd edition when a friend of mine was running a Heroic level campaign based on Star Wars. Since then I fell in love with the system. Then in 2004, I found myself playing a little MMO called City of Heroes. Since that time, I wanted to set up a campaign based on CoH using Heroes. But I never found the right group who was willing to play in this type of setting. Now, the group that I’m in are willing to try (currently playing Starfinders with a bit of Scion thrown in) playing this system. (One player already made his character) So I’m excited to see how my two great Super Hero loves is going to work

  24. Started by mallet,

So it has been a week since all the rumors and tweets started about FFG laying off (not only their video game line which was confirmed) but also all (or a large amount) of their staff in their RPG wing. A few (now) ex-employees confirmed that their had been cuts to the RPG but no one (that I could find searching) said how many or what it meant for their games going forward. Does anyone on here know more about what might be happening with them? I played a Star Wars campaign a few years back and actually grew to quite like the system and their books. Very nice quality and kind of surprising/sad that a company that big/popular with such a major IP ca…
