I joined this group and have gotten some absolutely incredible maps including animated maps for people that play on screen tables. This is just one was one that I am going to use and fairly time/genre generic but there are hundreds of all types. The Reddit group is r/battlemaps/ I am not in any way associated with the Patreon or even know who they are. I just grabbed one of the maps I downloaded and liked to show an example. Enjoy!

Consent in Gaming by Sean K. Reynolds and Shanna Germaine https://www.montecookgames.com/consent-in-gaming/ Tackle Mature Content with Confidence! From fending off an attack by bloodthirsty pirates to delving into dank caverns, roleplaying games allow you to explore and experience things you probably don’t want to face in real life—or to approach topics from the perspective of characters who may be very different than your actual self. This shared experience is intended to be fun for all involved, but RPGs can put characters in life-or-death crises, intense emotional situations, or traumatic environments. Whether it’s body horror in a s…

I have been out of TTRPG's since around 1998 except for a single Call of Cthulhu campaign I ran for a few roommates that had never played an RPG before in 2001 or so. And I can happily say I am so glad I came back to one of my old stand by's since there was a lot of haze from the explosion of systems and books in the 90's which incidentally was one of the reasons I stopped playing. I felt like things were getting too "gimmicky" or in other cases too serious about an activity that was ostensibly about "having fun". I felt that games were trying to sell us on their "Twist" or Color instead of focusing on giving us the tools to explore "The Beyond" that is what I think attr…

I'll put the TL;DR first: Friend of mine is running a game he loves, but I don't like. Torn between 'he's a friend, I'm obligated' and 'I'm not having fun, I should stay home'. The long version: He's running a game called Monster of the Week. It's designed to emulate things like Buffy, Grimm, urban fantasy shows with monster antagonists (and sometimes protagonists). The genre/concept itself, I don't mind, but the system is ... is ... there's almost no system to speak of. You have five stats, valued -1 to +3; Cool, Charm, Tough, Sharp, and Weird. To perform a 'Move' (as the game calls actions), you roll 2d6, add modifier. 7 or higher, you succeed. He…

I've been buying more board games lately. Unfortunately, the difference in price between online stores and my local board game store are pretty wide: a $10 difference or even $25 on the bigger, higher-priced games. The local store appears to just have everything set at standard retail price. Meanwhile, I can easily find a lower price online with free shipping. I'm not even referring to Amazon. I mean like CoolStuffInc and other places online. So... why should I buy locally? I have an urge to support a local business, but I honestly can't bring myself to pay this much extra money, repeatedly, when I can consistently save a non-negligible amount. I d…

I've been 3D printing Dragonlock terrain from Fat Dragon Games. I like it. It's quite suitable for dungeons, caverns, castles, etc. for fantasy. They have some starship floor plan parts as well. Does anyone else have some favorites to recommend? Obviously, since I'm pointing out Dragonlock, I've got no problem paying reasonable prices for quality stuff, but frankly my budget goes to gaming books first, then other stuff.

The kickstarter for a new edition of the legendary Chivalry & Sorcery is now live. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cns5/chivalry-and-sorcery-the-medieval-role-playing-game This edition builds and refines the rules presented on the 4th edition, published 19 years ago. Sections on medieval society are greatly expanded, taking advantage of two more decades of historical research. Judaism and Islam join Christianity in the core rules for the first time, with sections written by members of those faiths who have studied medieval beliefs and practices. Guidelines for creating fantasy religions and pantheons are included. A…

I am preparing for my groups sorta annual gaming weekend trip and wanted to go back to mapping, which we haven't been doing lately. So I pulled together 100 miniatures and a 30" by 7' grid with dry erasable cover for about $12 plus tax. I bought a pack of 100 meeples for $9.99 from Amazon. Then I numbered each color to ten and put eyes on front to mark facing. After we tried them out I put a dot of paint on the top , a different color for each number, to help identify them from above. I then bought a roll of wrapping paper with a one inch grid on the back (make sure it is labeled as having a grid) and a clear shower curtain from Dollar Tree. Dollar Tree also has d…

A player of mine wanted to use a weapon looking like this. I know its a claw but I was wondering what does it do? What kind of magical powers does it have? What is it called? Is it possible to find some concept art somewhere?

Some time ago, I posted in a thread about finding a hex patterned fabric. The store (where I'm standing now) has just gotten in a brand new bolt of the red (I bought red and sand a couple years ago). I am looking for a usable part number for anyone who might want an enter bolt. I've never found cheaper map: it's hard to beat $4.97 a _yard_ for map. I have never tried washable marker, etc, but it marks up well with chalk, or you can set it under an acrylic sheet and use any sort of wash-off implement. The hexes are a tad undersized at 7/8", but it's a non-issue for us. And before it gets asked: yes; I carry a 25' tape measure every…

Does anyone happen to know if Paizo paid a licensing fee to Wizards of the Coast to use the Aboleth in Pathfinder? More generally, I wonder how often monsters created and owned by one RPG publisher get used by another. Is it common? Does money usually exchange hands when this happens?

This was sent to me by a player who then had the audacity to ask "we're not that bad, are we?" https://i.redd.it/35w2wbpo57v21.png Didn't want to do a hot link on someone else's bandwidth, so you'll have to go check it out.

Does anybody have a good source for multi-level floor plans for modern buildings? I'm looking for several stories of a brownstone or low-rise commercial building.

So which genre do you think is most in need of a fresh new setting? I’ve got that creative itch and thought I’d give working on a setting a crack. Now I just need a genre and can’t seem to settle on one so how about a little help?

Apparently, I've been remarkably inattentive... for a longer stretch of time than I thought. I went to find HeroCentral to see what kind of campaigns were running and... it's gone. [insert_CharletonHeston-StatueOfLiberty_pic_here] I'm almost afraid to ask whether the site is gone entirely or just relocated...?

Michael Surbrook wrote a book / PDF titled "Here be Dragons." I know there's a 6e version, published by Evil Beagle, but I have been (perhaps erroneously) informed that he had an earlier version for 5e published by D3 Games. I've been hunting it for a couple of days now with no luck (the 5e version). Anyone on the board have any idea where I might try to buy a copy of the 5e version? Thanks for any help you can give! Dozens of free PDF's of West End Games RPG version of Star Wars. Rule books, Sourcebooks, adventures, guides, even a couple of "choose your own adventure" solo books. Also some conversions of WotC's d20 Star Wars into the West End Games d6 system. Had no idea all of this existed until a few minutes ago but it looks like most everything Star Wars that WEG published. The setting is the pre-Disney Star Wars Expanded Universe. http://www.starwarstimeline.net/Westendgames.htm

Just for fun, I thought i'd try my hand at creating a (message) board game. The rules are simple -> You first choose a topic typical of tabletop gaming such as "Dragon", "Battle at Sea", "Paladin's Mount", or "Unorthodox Treasure". Then, you describe what each topic would look like if introduced at a low level, a mid level, and a high level; you can be as serious/funny/brief/elaborate as you wish. Once you've finished, suggest a topic for the next poster to tackle. The thread will continue for as long as people are willing to contribute. I'll kick things off with a time-honored adversary... --- --- --- "Roadside Bandits" Low Lev…

Yep. I just picked up the current BOH for nostalgia. Not that I have ever even _heard_ of this Dungeon Under the Mountain, the whole "mega dungeon" thing brought back memories of the seventies, when all the nerdy kids were going through entire tablets of graph paper to create "the ultimate dungeon" or just outdo each other with size and complexity. Though some good came of them, too. My original Champions GM kept lot of the ones he had made, as had a couple of other friends. When we first figured out that Champions could be used for any genre, and when 2e came out and I bought my own boxed set, I bummed a seventeen-page super dun…

OpenLegends is a OpenSource RPG System. I stumbeled over this only last year. But reading it I think there is some interesting ideas in this RPG System. Both for itself, and for similar mechanics in Hero. Indeed OpenLegends might even be a good learning/demo RPG Systems for Hero. A less granular way to learn a point-buy System. You can find the full rules here: https://openlegendrpg.com/core-rules/00-introduction But I will try to give a bit of an overview and talk about the particulary interesting parts. It it'score it is a cross-setting, point buy RPG system that has systems for social and physical combat. Powers, Talents and Co: D…

Back in the day, there was a site called Hero Central. I've been experimenting with local file restores of certain campaigns on the site. In short, if someone wants to read a campaign they were in, I can pass them zips of specific campaigns from Hero Central. They require are offline files, they are JavaScript (so a reasonable browser and computer, not a phone), and at this point I'm trying to keep the list I give out small. That being said, if you know a campaign you were a part of, tell me, and I'll pass along the files for it. This is still in the alpha stage so there may be lots of bugs or debugging to get threads to work. …

Being more a fan of the superhero genre, I've often wondered at the general (roleplaying) public's seeming preference for the sword & sorcery genre. I base my theory on the huge amount of fantasy rpgs out there, although superheroes have quite a few. I also look at the number of superhero MMOs as opposed to fantasy-based games. I have a working theory, which I'd like to open up for discussion. Superheroes are about Protecting the Status Quo, Upholding The Law, Opposing Evil, Black & White (all of this is of course my opinion, and is way simplified as well). All of this is done in a world close to our own. Fantasy is about Adventuring, and a…

My son is starting a D&D 5e group and we've been discussing GMing in general, as well as playing, and just roleplaying in general. We started sharing various YouTube videos with each other and using those as springboards for more discussion. He sent me the following video, and as I watched it, it really hit home how the Hero System really does some things really right. There's mention of how HPs don't seem to really represent damage well. How there's no easy way to determine lethality. And the importance of discussing the campaign setting with the players. These of course are all things that I, and I assume many of you take for granted as non-problems when it comes to…
