With half a ton of Champions books bowing my shelving I was absolutely, positively not going to be buying Dark Champions. No need, not my style, it'd never get used and so forth. And then this evening I snagged a free ticket to the preview of the "Sin City" movie and, like half of the characters, I was blown away. My resolve is weakening...

I'm betting there are SCUBA people out there who can tell me about how much a 1-hour's worth of oxygen tanks would weigh. I am trying to come up with an approximate weight of the SCUBA Equipment listed on page 288 of the Dark Champions book. If you know the answer to that one, how much would the rebreather outfit (options, same page) weigh?

A disturbing trend (as far as gaming is concerned) that I see is the effectiveness of modern body armor. Many of the standard guns that are out on the street are no match for state-of-the-art body armor. This is even reflected in the Dark Champions book. For instance a street thug manages to get some AP bullets for his 9mm Glock. Using the Dark Champions table on page 218 we can see that this will be a 1d6 RKA AP attack. Along comes vigilante boy wearing his Level III-A Spectra body armor with 9 PD. Even with his armor value halved, due to the AP, the gun that is shooting him will need to roll sixes on the damage dice to do even a single point of damage. In the real …

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone has ever done a write up for Vigilante, I used to collect Vigilante comics in the 80's and always loved them. That was a least until DC did it's Crisis on Infinte Earth's thing. So if anyone has I would really love to see it. Take care and be well, Grym

In the on line guide to Hudson City neighborhood Reference it list Crown point (Ashwood) as the gay part of town, but in the Hudson City Hotel,Bar, and Restaurant. It's does not list one gay bar in the whole city. As a gay gamer, I am just wondering why?

Now that the 2004-2005 TV season is over in the United States, people are going to argue over what the best new show was. In this country for broadcast, that is like arguing over the ideal number of fingers on a leper. Although i am not devoted to anything on broadcast, the one new series that has consistently entertained me the most is House. It is a medical drama about a Dr. House (played by Hugh Laurie, a British actor who did a lot of great stuff over there, particuarly with Stephen Fry) who tackles diseases and ailments that baffle everyone else. House is brilliant and mercurial but arrogant, misanthropic, callous and addicted to painkillers. He'll cure your ill…

I've just ordered the first season of The Shield - gritty with a seedy underbelly! Just wondering what TV shows, films, books & comics you guys consider good reference for the DC genre. I understand there are multiple sub-genres to cover, but, what the hey!

Below are the house rules that I am using for body armor in my Dark Champions campaign. This campaign strives for more realism than cinematic effects. I am posting this as an FYI for whoever might be interested. I have an extensive collection of body armor that I have worked up based on what is available out there in the real world. Most of what I have conjectured is based upon TV (Discovery Channel, Military Channel, TLC, etc.) and web resources that I have found. THE SHORTCOMINGS OF BODY ARMOR Modern body armor is very effective at stopping what it was designed to stop. What it is designed to stop is bullets and shrapnel. As an added benefit it is pretty effectiv…

I'm still waiting for the books to stat out my world. So I thought I'd write a short story to flesh it out some more. Let me know what you think. Part One -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Burning diesel fuel and cigarettes. God this place reeks, Carlos thought to himself. I’ve been waiting for this hack, who calls himself a mechanic, for over two hours. Enough is enough. “Hey man! When can I cruise outta here? You said this was an easy job!†As if a response, another part of Carlos’ baby rolls out. Only stop next to a pair of grease stained jeans sticking out from under the fender. “Well mate, whoev…

I really like the optional Skill Enhancer 'Expert'. Though, I am finding that one can really pile on the skills with the right explanation. In the book, they gave the example of Russia. I believe that the list of skills could be quite long. Do you allow/use this skill enhancer? Do you have a limit on the number of skills that can be a part of it?

Although this idea mainly comes from reading about the Yakuza, who began as police in areas where the feudal Japanese authorities didn't want to go, but it could apply to other "organzied crime" gropus as well. What sort of a campaign could you build around characters who are criminals, and do illegal things for a living, but who have a moral code of their own and lines they never cross -- and find themsvles opposing and oppsoed by other criminals for whom there is no such code, not to mention by the authorities? There are numeorus examples of this in fiction, from thieves who secretly support charities such as orphanges and commit crimes to ebenfit them to assa…

I was scathed second-hand on the boards the other day. A guy was expressing displeasure at gamers who just give their characters the most powerful weapons they can carry with their given strength, regardless of how well the gun fits the character. I looked at my character sheet. A softspoken analyst character who dabbles in mystical arts . . . and carries a Glock 21 (2d6 RKA) with a Silencer/Flash Supressor and lazer sights. Okay, I've clearly done something out of character. The Silencer works (quiet man that doesnt draw attention to himself, quiet gun that doesn't draw attention to itself), but I still needed something less . . . austere. Now, I really don'…

First of all let me provide a spoiler warning. If any player from my future Red Star game lurks on this thread I will be very ticked. I'll give you a chance to back out now. You know who you are. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ok, I'm trying to create a sniper character for the heros to deal with. Sort of a crime scene investigators thing. The sniper will be heinously powerful given time and preperation. but if you get him running or get one step ahead, he should be an easy catch. A little mind over muscle. I am just working with Sidekick, DC and Hudson City. I'll post his stats here but I have a few rule…

This was a villian from the old Murder's Row supplement (4th Edition DC). Does anybody have any art that would work for him? I am revamping the old villian since one of my players is using him as a hunted.

I'm trying to create a brick for my up coming sci-fi game. We are using pre-gens and the player wants a brick. The game will have periods of time when the players will not be in full gear and other times when they will be loaded for bear. Equipment is bought with Resource Points and the group will be a military unit so armor is available. I'm having trouble finding the balance. The player wants to soak damage and "Stand there and take it" Easy enough to do with good armor. But if the brick is wearing the good armor why can't the rest of the party? Then they are all bricks. If I give the brick more inherent powers like DR or rPD the brick becomes permantly re…

I'm trying to design some cyberware that can grant an adrenaline surge to get people up and out of combat. Medic runs up sticks a guy and he's somwhat better, for a while. something like 2-3d6 healing RSR. but I need a mechanic to have the effects temporary and then a side effect of STUN only damage (Maybe body if I feel nasty). So yes you get him up and out but you better moniter him becuase he's going to crash in 30min, an hour or whenever. I know side effects can cause the damage but how do I delay it and have the healing effect disappear. Can I link the healing with a delayed effect NND attack? There has got to be a simpler way I'm just not there yet. My rule…

Has anyone out there tried to make a martial arts based on hitting people with vehicles? I'm thinking you would need a two-wheeler for spins and things. A lot of move-throughs but I would like strikes too. Either HTH attacks from the back of the bike, or, (more what I want) useing the bike itself to attack. The character I'm thinking of this for would be a Shadowrun rigger-type. Phenomenal driver skills/vehicle control but can't move his body while driving. He's effectively tied to the bike. I thought it would be fun. Has anyone out there tried this? -Peace

Two questions: 1) Hypnosis is pretty popular in many actiony TV shows and movies, and while not as powerful as its made out to be (because the target has to be willing), it has real world effects. Do you think Hypnosis should be permited in the average DC game? 2) Fifth edition writes it up with Mind Control, but does that handel all the applications? Or should it really be a multipower of some kind? Issues that raise this point: a) One of the most popular uses is "Go back to the night of April 3rd, at 9:00 PM. Where are you?", which seems like some kind of clairsentience build. Most real world hypnotists make their bread and butter with habit breaking comm…

This a call to all the experienced Hero players out there. I need some advice. I've been playing Hero for about two years now. I'm taking the plunge to try and run a game for our group. The group has an established world that they know and love. Our main GM has been running it for about 15-20 years now. Not sure exactly how long as I am a new-comer. So it's a pretty tough audience with established expectations. Of course they are all nice and helpful but I would prefer my baptism-by-fire to not end in charred remains. Right now the biggest roadblock I'm encountering is the mechanics. I have a good grasp on the basics. It just seems that creating NPC's/Enemies…

I have a few questions about these types of sights. I believe that the collimating/reflex sight is also called a "holographic" sight by some companies. Is that correct, or is that another type of sight? Having never used one just how effective they really are. Dark Champions says that they grant a +2 OCV and +10 RMod to the gun they are fitted to and they give +2 PER vs. darkness, but they are only good out to 125", beyond that no bonus. Is this realistic? It seems like this will pretty much negate range from being a factor in combat. Most of our DC combats take place in less than half of that 125" distance.
