-1/4 Costs Endurance only to Activate? From FAQ: Costs Endurance Q: Could a character apply a Costs Endurance Only To Activate Limitation (-1/4) on a power that normally does not cost END? A: As a default rule, no — if a character wants Costs Endurance, it has to be the normal type of Endurance cost. As always, the GM is free to allow this if he thinks it won’t be particularly abusive or otherwise cause problems in-game. Well I am thinking about using this limitation in my Fantasy Hero Campaign. For some spells, Dark Vision, a low powered Mystic Shield (DVC +2), and a few others. I can see how it could be easily abused. But if used to simulate …

As you walk down the alley the wall to the left explodes outward in a shower of brick. Out of the hole steps a large heavily muscled creature with the body of a man and the head of a ox. He carries what looks to be an unconscious woman in his arms. Phase 12, go.

Talismans are the other facet of Cleric Alchemy. These are at best 20 AP BUT have multiple uses OR one use for a long duration (One has a duration of a season) These represent the small holy magic relics that people buy at the temple. As a result I have also made them specific to each deity. This is one where I really can use some help in fleshing out some options. For example Orchen (God of fire and Speed) I could not think of anything that wasn't already a potion! Or am I overthinking this? Anyway, I present... Talismans:

well... technically he's still a paladin but a werewolves but ok, the problem (for him... for me is a good thing ) is: they fought a werewolf, and the paladin where "infected" by wolfy's blood (no comment on "how"...) so he'll be transform in a werewolf the next full moon night then? bestiary is a bit confused (imho) so dunno if what i thought is correct: a) i give him a new power: Multiform (in a half-wolf half-man 320 point (1), and a big wolf); [69 active point]; Extra Time (Extra Phase, -3/4), No Conscious Control (-2) [18 point] give him a new disadvantage: Accidental Change: night of full moon (Uncommon, Always) [20 points] then I - i…

...If I End Up In an Urban Fantasy Novel 1 2 3

50 Rules to Follow If I End Up In an Urban Fantasy Novel I'm sure we can think of more. 1. I will not ask paranormal detectives or supernatural cops if vampires or werewolves are better in bed. 2. I will not ask anyone if vampires or werewolves are better in bed. 3. Especially if they’re vampires or werewolves. 4. I will not ask vampire hunters if they have a Mr. Pointy. 5. I will not conjure demons to do my food runs for me. 6. I will not pay delivery people in fairy gold. 7. Love potions never end well. 8. I will not ask fairies if they know Legolas. 9. I will not ask fairies if they know Frodo. 10. I will not ask…

I decided to see what a write-up might be for a sword that attacks independently of its owner. Except I can't add Persistent without Constant. And Constant means that (according to the HD info), once it hits, it can keep hitting without needing to roll. "This Advantage allows a character to use an Attack Power on a continuing basis without having to make a new Attack Roll every Phase against the same target." Exact text. Not what I want, either. So I decide to check the rules text. I go to my handy searchable .pdf, go to the Power Advantages section and search for Constant. It's not there. I looked manually, as well. No sign of it. I go to the Killing Attack P…

Heya all, I've been thinking about this idea for a while and finally decided to write it down and see what everyone else here thought. One thing that has always annoyed me about the SPD mechanic is that as your number of actions increases, so does your movement rate. Now while this is fine for most games. For heroic games it makes more sense to me for a character to have more actions without actually moving any faster, but I found no 'heroic' level variant for how SPD and movement rates were handled. So without further Adu, The Heroic-level Speed-Movement conversion: Normal: Normally a characters Movement in x" is the maximum distance per phase. effectivly m…

First, it needs to do damage. So, an Energy Blast. Second, it needs to have a very small chance of missing. So a CSL: One attack/weapon. Except it's in a VPP with modifiers. And CSL: One attack/weapon can't have modifiers. And it's in a List, so it can't use Linked, either. Help?

I am very strongly considering starting an online game using Maptools http://www.rptools.net/index.php?page=downloads As I am still in the very early stages of learning the software, this may take a while for me to get off the ground. The beauty of it is that it appears that much can be done online as quickly as it might be done around a table, meaning a weekly game could actually be played in a few hours, resolving much the same degree of play as a regular table top game. In all likelihood I would also be using some sort of voice chat software along side the Maptools graphical program, as that will make things flow 'much' faster. I usually describe my play style as…

While looking through an ancient tome (the 1978-vintage Swords and Sorcerors supplement to 1st edition Chivalry & Sorcery) I discovered a rather useful Viking archetype which would fit Valdorian Age adventures very well and increase party durability at the same time. This is the Brewmaster - someone who brews magic potions - but the kicker is that it is magic beer/lager/mead This archetype is not a very powerful as magicians go - basically it is a warrior with a useful hobby, so is brilliant for the 'Healing Potion supplier' kind of character without being too creepy and 'sorceror-like', plus there is great scope for amusing and genre-emulating side-effect…

How would you guys build a "Bag of Holding" style item in HERO System. I can think of several ways, but somehow none of them feel quite right. Extra Dimensional movement to some kind of pocket dimension? (This is the way Fantasy HERO does it, but doesn't feel quite right to be. Probably because it assumes the pre-existence of a convenient pocket dimension!) Transform objects to weightless, sizeless versions of objects? Extra STR only for the purposes of carrying stuff? Any other suggestions?

The Companions are the Heroes of the hour. They banished the Demon Lord, dispelling the Zombie Army and terrifying the Orcs Hordes. They overshadowed the Champions of Caithness and won for themselves a new place in the peoples legends and songs. In the process they may have become too powerful. The King looks upon the Heroes the most dangerous threat to the Nobility in his time. They are all commoners and mostly not human. Sir Cat Elendil was Knighted for his bravery and actions against the Orcs at Castle Defiant and the Zarak's Southern Gate. In the siege of Redhall he strode the battle field like a pagan god of war. He has no ties to the Land, the Nobility, …

I know Crosshair Collie is going to scream bloody murder at me for this, but I'm finding myself wondering how to translate Takahashi's "Tribe of Women Heroes", aka "the Chinese Amazons" from Ranma 1/2, into a viable culture for fantasy PCs to encounter or be members of. The tribe is a matriarchal society built around personal combat prowess, with a heavy dose of herbalism and possibly other types of magic. The term "Amazon" is something of a misnomer -- not only are both sexes present, but everyone of both genders trains in combat in addition to whatever other trade they learn (after all, somebody has to make clothes, grow food, etc. even in a society of warriors). …

The "Fantasy with Science Fiction" thread made we wonder if anyone has tried adapting Bungie's Destiny video game into the HERO system? It should obviously be a blend of Star HERO (spaceships, robots, energy weapons, etc.) and Fantasy HERO (warlocks, magic/tech combinations). I think it would be possible with a little work. There is quite a bit of Destiny lore on the various WIKI websites and on YouTube. Those would be crucial to fleshing out the world history. A small group of characters could be given a variety of challenges based on mission ideas from the game. There seems to be an endless amount of lost technology scattered throughout old Earth, the Moon, …

this is for a "race" that binds their life to a tree. They gain some powers from it. I will post other bits as I have them detailed (tree is a "base", detect tree instead of detect north for absolute direction, etc). Their hair turns green and thick (like grass, although it could be leafy, needley or otherwise) and stores extra lifeforce when they are healthy. This functions as extra body, strength, and con. The hair is a focus - cut it off and they lose the extra points (it grows back at the rate body regenerates). The strength and con are linked to the body - if the character loses body their hair falls out and/or wilts and their strength and con drops u…

So, here's an idea for a somewhat higher-powered fantasy campaign that I was wondering if anyone tried before: Everyman Magic. The idea is simple: if it's easy/sensible to scale it, take your campaign's magic system and give it, in some small or medium scale, for free, to each PC. Not necessarily every character, just each PC. Then PCs then differentiate themselves with the rest of their character points: if they want to be very magic focused they can spend a lot improving themselves in that system, or they can buy combat abilities, or pretty much whatever in terms of independent powers. I imagine it would, obviously, work best with a magic system that was somehow li…

In the HERO System 6th Edition selection in the Store, what is the difference between the "Fantasy Hero Complete" and the "Fantasy Hero 6th Edition"? One has a book 'and' a PDF of the book, which makes it quite attractive, and the other is just a PDF. However they are clearly different products. Obviously the Steven Long one is the 'official' one. If I was to choose one, which would you advise. Would both be super useful? (Money is seriously tight for me these days.) I am quite conversant with Hero and have the original 6th edition books already. I have and regularly use Hero Designer as well.

Hello all, First let me thank all of you who have helped me with my questions, in particular Killer Shrike. I've found this forum to be very friendly and incredibly helpfull. Ok, do you all feel buttered up yet? Well, I've finely "seen the light" as it were, for utilizing MPP's for spell-casters and will be adjusting my magic system appropriately. This will, hopefully, place spell-casters a bit more on par with the other less-enchanted characters. Now in my game world, the God of Magic is a rather nasty individual with a real bad attitude but is a joy if you're into lies, deceipt and crushing your victims emotionally and spiritually. He's also fond …

Is it possible to use the standard fantasy tropes in a world with no magic? If magic is defined as "any action that violates the laws of cuase and effect", then magic is logically contradictory and therefore CANNOT exist. most fnantasy GMs don;t enforce a ligikcal cosmos, but if you did then there can;t be real magic. What there can be is a pervasive belief that magic exists, leading many people to think that magical effects are possible or even common. And you can have numerous con artists and charlatans taking advanmtage of that belief to sell worthless postions, take money for putting non-existant hexes on people's enemies, etc. Character can go to magical he…

I'm converting some very high level DnD characters over from my old Campaign to Hero. This is going mostly smoothly. the trouble I hit is dealing with CSLs. How high should they get? What is a "realistic/reasonable" amount for what would be an 18th-20th level character? There aren't many high point NPCs floating around in the main rulebooks to base comparisons off of. I know the Uber-Ninja in Ninja Hero has +10/+11 with all of his stuff active at once. Is this about right? Has anyone played a 75+75 game up to 250-400 pts? If so, where did your fighter's CSLs get to? Just curious as to what other's think.

Transforming a scroll or a book into a collection of un-understandable gibberish. 1d6 (not much body in a scroll) Cosmetic Transformation? (buying back time, ading a release trigger, etc). If you bought it with "Invisible to Detect Magic" then would look it have high Deduction characters tearing there hair out? How hard should it be to figure out that it doesn't mean anything? Or is there a better way to do this? Doug.

What do you think about magic as 'science', with haveing to obay certan laws and such? I ask this, because I watched the first four epasolds of Full Metal Alchemist (an intresting anime series) at Gamefest Milwaukee, and it seems that there is a big sciente background to the alchemisty (for example, the main big rule for Alchemisty is that you must give up something of equal value to acheve the effect you want, which Al and his brother learned when trying to bring there mother back to life).
