There are a couple of canonical Powers that brought with "Limitations" that actually grant them additional ability that the power uses to be build them doesn't normally have. One example is: Corherent Form pg 230 of the Until Superpowers Database. I was wondering what different opinions are on this sort of thing? Personally, I'm sitting on the fence.

Let me begin by saying that I am starting this thread with an open mind and the best of intentions. I have played a lot of RPG's over the years: AD&D Top Secret Gamma World Traveller Call of Cthulhu Champions Justice Inc. Bushido The Arcanum Villains and Vigilantes and probably a few more that I don't remember. These experiences have ranged from a single adventure to a lengthy campaign. However, I have not played a lot of more recent RPG's (Vampire the Masquerade, D20, Mutants and Masterminds, etc.), so I do not completely trust my evaluation of the "start up" requirements of various RPG's, especially newer ones. So, what I a…

Ok, I'm a bit confused about throwing objects at characters. I had the chance to be in a spur of the moment pick up Champions game. In that game, my sword-wielding brick picked up the body of a plane I'd just wrecked and threw it at my nearly impervious opponent. Damage was the same as if I had punched them. So long as the object had enough def+body, its weight, pointy bits, etc don't matter. Meanwhile, if I hit them with a heavy enough club, I'd have done +4d6. A stick does 4DC extra, a plane does zip? Yeah, I realize it allowed me to attack with an AoE, but shouldn't it provide some bonus damage? If I dropped it on someone, it would d…

Buildings a mental power based character today. Started to trot out the standard Elemental Control, then I thought: 'Hang on a minute: why should I get away with this?' I mean Telepathy and Mind Control and Ego Attack and Mind Scan are very different powers, linked by being Mental Powers, but if someone came along and said 'I've got a Defensive Powers EC', you'd think twice. Struck me that having the powers grouped together in the book is not really a special effect, or if it is then you really don't need much to link the powers in an EC at all. That got me thinking: why have the rather artificial requirement that you come up with a linked group of sfx? P…

... to lift yourself? Now, before you start laughing, when I say "lift yourself", I mean lift yourself without having to worry about that nasty leverage thing. For those of you who say X-Men (and really, who among us hasn't?) when Mistique starts climbing up a wall-mounted pipe with her body parallel to the ground, she is showing off what I mean. How much Strength do you need to lift your body in all-but-complete defiance of gravity and inertia? Now personally, I was thinking "enough Casual STR to lift your weight" but I'm not sure if that works. Alternately, I suppose I could go for some kind of Flight, only to allow for body suspension". Again, not really sure…

I have a long time character I'm in the process of converting to Hero. The character is a spirit bottle. The spirit bottle is a repository of the tribes great chiefs and heroes. A spirit bottle has the following powers, some from the ritual that makes them a spirit bottle, and some from the fact that they are a repository of spiritual power: 1) see souls, demons, etc. (detect, sense: spirit sight). 2) soul wrastlin' (affects deso on strenth). 3) regenerate, even from death, but over a period of several days 4) LS: aging, disease 5) bottle spirit (x-dim movement?)* 6) call bottled spirits (contacts) I want some ideas on how people would deal with number …

Are there rules anywhere in the corebook or other books for sizing weapons and armor for creatures larger and smaller than human? Thanks, Nick

I've noticed an unusual number of Hero Newbies showing up on the boards over the last couple weeks, asking questions and sorting things out. Don't misunderstand me. I an thrilled everyone is trying out Hero and hope I've done my share to help folks out. I'm just curious as to why the big uptick? We usually get one or two self-proclaimed newbies every month or so, but it seems like there have been a half dozen in just the last week. The last time I noticed such a big upswing was just after Sidekick came out.

I have two build questions, any input would be appreciated. Psi-Blade has a few powerful psionic abilities in an EC. Armor defined as nanotech that can be pulled into his body (think Guyver). The nanotech also provides regeneration but only when it’s not acting as armor, also when KOed but not Stuned it reverts to regen unless in a place that loosing the LS of the armor would kill the character. That is the first question how do I make this? Second the psionic EC powers can be used when the armor is off but they cause the character damage. The armor acts as a stabilizer and conduit so he can focus his power without hurting himself. Any ideas on how to buil…

Hello, A question came up on another thread... Is it possible to create an END Pool that represents WILL?? It is for a Green Lantern character. The idea was to create an END pool for the ring to draw from but have it generated by calculating using WILL. I was also thinking of trying a "Rule of X" thing where no power can be greater than (WILL x ??) Opionins??

I am having a discussion disgreement with a player over the Psychological Limitation "Casual Killer" (Common Strong). I see it this way. The character hold life in no value, anyone's life except possibly his own or another person whom has some psych lim (or possibly DNPC) disadvantage regarding. He can kill anyone, at anytime without as moment hesistation, on a whim because it is convienient to him. Killing is his first thought not his last and he's as likely to punch someone in the throat crushing their trachea as tell them to shut if they are making too much noise. If there's no immediate repercussions and/or they are of no immediate use to him. He's not a psychot…

I want to creat a "Feedback" power inspired by Starcraft. This power drains END from the target and cause BODY damage determined by the cost of the END drained (1 BODY per 4 END). First, I thought doing it by the Drain Power, but this power as a fade rate- I don't want the END to return to the target, only via normal REC. So, how can I build this?

I’ve been thinking about how the bonuses (or penalties) to OCV/DCV granted by combat skill levels or maneuvers last until the start of the character’s next phase. Barring an Abort of course, which cancels out any prior maneuver bonuses/penalties and replaces them with those generated by the aborted to maneuver and allows for the reassignment of CSLs. So if a Speed 6, DEX 20 character Martial Dodges and puts two All Combat skill levels into DCV on segment 2, he will be +7 to his DCV until DEX 20 of segment 4. At least this is my understanding of the rules in FRED and the old FAQ. I don’t have Revised, so if anything has changed there regarding this, please se…

In Requires Skill Roll, they list the option of using your OCV with no skill levels. The cost is "No Change". What does this mean? Does the character make a to hit roll against the target to activate the power? Do they suffer the negative penalty from ACtive Points as in the 3/2 skills? What value is used? -1/2? -1/4? -0? Any help would be appreciated.

Thought I'd start a new thread based on a comment I made in the Strength Damage: Pathetic thread. You're not seriously suggesting this, are you? Actually, yes I am. I'm happy for a character to occasionally use movement powers to cause falling damage, but if it becomes a regular feature, I would seriously consider charging them points as if it were an attack. The reason being that falling damage isnt figured into the price of STR (for the grab) or Flight (for the movement): it's a freebie. It wouldnt cost many points to have sufficient STR and NCM Flight to turn this into an attack against pretty much anyone (especially if you use one of those house rul…

Hello all. I am just wondering if anyone else out there is working on multiple things for HERO at the same time. I am currently working on: 1) Star Hero adventure for a Convention. 2) Martial Arts adventure for a Convention. 3) I have a Fantasy Hero campaign that I run weekly. 4) I have a champions campaign that is currently on hiatus, but will be ran for again probably starting in April some time. 5) I am really wanting to work on a Star Wars conversion. 6) I am also thinking about putting of the Star Wars conversion and working on a "re-imagined" Dr. Who campaign.

I was thinking recently of a gadgeteer who started as a Kid Sidekick to a Super Team. Every time they defeated a gadget using bad guy, the gadget would go into the trophy room. Now, the team has vanished. While they're gone, the Kid Sidekick is trying to keep order by using the trophy room gadgets. Mechanically it's a simple build: He pays for the base and the vehicles normally, and the gadgets are a VPP, may only change in the trophy room, slightly limited choice of gadgets. Thinking more about that, and about something Hugh mentioned, would you make your characters pay any points for the gear they take off of villains and store in the trophy room? Would they pay f…

Would anyone with long term experience on these boards give me a list of the Hot Topics that just turn sour? I want to avoid wandering stupidly into mindfeilds in the future.

Inspired by a post in another thread, and by The Ultimate Brick: Str 43 = The Strength of 100 Men. Str 43 = 8.5d6 punch 8.5d6 = Str 13 Martial Artist with Fast Strike and a Bo Staff. So does the fact that a man with the Strength of 100 Men only hits as hard as a fairly athletic guy with a stick bug anyone else?

Sometimes known as Inverse Artillery Accuracy or the Mook Factor, the more bad guys that are shooting at a character, the less likely they are to hit him. And even if shot, it doesn't seem to hit an area that significantly handicaps him. This is not as big a problem in superhero games, since agents tend to be much lower in CV than the PCs, but it becomes more of an issue in Heroic-level games. How have you dealt with protraying this in your campaigns?

Just a regular old alarm clock, in HERO terms! Here's one silly build: Aid (STUN), 1/2d6 (Used Cusom Adder -5), Works Against stunned/lightly out (>-5?)/sleeping targets only (-1/2), Trigger (Set in Advance for a Specific Time, +1/4), OAF (-1), Must Be Able to Hear (used same value as Incantations though it's a slightly different version, -1/4), Explosion 1 DC/3" (to fill a room, +1), Side Effect (-0, piercing sound until reset, occurs every time, only affects environment near character), NND (hard ear coverings, +1), Continuous (+1). Per HD, if you even buy this version, it's 21 AP, 7 real cost.

Hello all. I've got a martial arts character, and I'm trying to buy him an attack that simulates "Whirlwind Attack" in D&D. (For those who don't play 3e, Whirlwind Attack allows a character to attack all adjacent opponents.) I've been trying to build something like this with Hero, but with little success. My first thought was to make it an Area Effect attack (with a 2" radius and a hole in the middle). But this doesn't seem to fit, because I only have to hit the hex, not the targets. (Besides, hitting the hex seems beside the point when I'm using a hand-to-hand attack.) I mean, it would be nice to only have to hit my own hex and do damage to everyone arou…
