I guess this is only really a factor in superherioc games, since only supers really burn thru the END (ok, maybe mages as well...) I printed up a page with numbers listed sequentially, 10 per row, placed them in plastic covers and made sure grease pencils were available. Inelegant, but functional. But no one used them. Other players added and subtracted right on their sheet, but then, their sheets got all worn out from all the writing and erasing. Any exciting other ways people track END? Magic beans? Robots?

First off, hello all. I’m coming back to Hero after a long absence, I’ve played every edition down the line including a 4th ed campaign that I ran for about three years but I haven’t done anything in Hero since the mid-nineties. Anyway I’ve been fooling around with building some characters, just to get back in the swing of things and I was working on a possible villain for my campaign who like Psylocke from the X-Men, had a psychic energy dagger. My plan is to build it as AVLD HKA or possiblely a AVLD HA, with mental defense protecting against the attack. My question is, providing the character has martial arts, would it be legal to add a weapon element to the A…

So I just bought 5ER. I'd read through 5th before, but this is my very own copy, to read and annotate. And I'm trying to figure out which are the optional bits. I mean, f'rex, how crucial are turn modes? I could very easily just say, "Okay, everyone maneuvers equally well, regardless of their velocity." That's the kind of thing I'm talking about.

I'm working on some Cyberpunk Hero constructs for a campaign (and for Kublacon, just two months away...). I'm wondering, should Cyberware be Equipment (and thus cost bucks, euro, yen, rupies, etc...) or Powers (and thus cost CP)? Right now, I'm leaning towards Equipment because it's more of a Cyberpunk feel. If you got the Cash, you can affoard to buy yourself all the reflexes, skills, and muscles you want. What do my fellow Guru's think (and what is the opinion of our sagacious Line Developer?)

We were talking about the system, and the flexibility of Hero. He has already decided he likes it better from a statistical standpoint, and I gave him some simple examples of making powers. (I am planning a Super/Champions style game). His question was kind of off beat, but I thought I would put it up here as I don't have books available to me, then direct him here if I got any answers. He wanted to know how Hero would handle it if he wanted his character to have a "Scathing Monologue" power. I said I was sure it could handle it, and asked him what he was thinking of in such a power. The way he put it, it sounded more like a disadvantage, the typical monolog…

Classes of Minds 1 2
by tinman- 41 replies

I've been using classes of minds in my Champions campaign, but it has only really applied to NPC's. Until now. One of my players is making up a new character who will be an android (an alien scout) and who will therefore fall under the machine class of mind. The problem is that while I like the idea that he will be a different class of mind than the other PC's (and that this will be obvious to any mentalists he meets), I don't like the idea that he will be immune to most mentalists without really having any corresponding negative drawback or having had to pay any points. I don't mind the immunity per se, but I think it needs to cost him. I figured that 75…

As a long time gamer, D&D, AD&D, 2E, 3E, 3.5E, Dragonquest, GURPS, Rolemaster, Vampire, Mage, Paladium, Sword Bearer, Warhammer FRP... and on and on, since the 70's, I finally think I know what it is I want from a game system. I have been looking into trying out the Hero system; I've picked up the sidekick and have had a chance to BEGIN reading it. I plan on reading further on a flight coming up, but wanted to ask some basic questions on feel. I run a game for a group of people whose time is very limited; everyone wants to feel that we are progressing, not only in story arcs, but also character development. I just don't have a good feeling for how char…

How do you guys handle these meta-game thinking/acting problems? 1. Speaking 'in character' and then claiming that the insult or joke or challenge just uttered was 'out of character' when there is some foreshadowing that it was not well received; 2. When using minis to map out complex combat, using 'bird's eye view' to decide what actions to take, rather than relying on actual character perception. WHile this is allowable in a war game, in an RPG or 'real life' no one can take in a whole mass melee as if one were a casual observer... 3. Interspering joking around (always welcome at my table) with formulating a plan for minutes and minutes (not welcome in…

As a big, old nerd, I am concerned about declining sales in our hobby. It certainly isnt me--why, last night alone, I bought the Spacer's Toolkit, and I must spend about $300/year at least on RPG stuff. Alot of us older guys buy alot of stuff. I also noticed that the vast majority of guys at a con I was at last year are in the neighborhood of my age (36)--late 20's thru early 40's. I remeber going to GenCon years ago when it was in Milwaukee, and there were young-uns and old folks alike. I think we may be missing the young-uns. I also remember that gaming was a source of alot of fun for me when I was younger--it helped me make friends, and stay out of troubl…

Narcolepsy

How would you model narcolepsy as a disadvantage on a character? A Physical Limitation or maybe an Accidental Change? How would you set it up as an attack? A big Ego Attack, an NND, a STUN Drain? Something else?

Let's say I have a character who has burning fists (HA vs ED) and he wants to punch someone and do physical damage from the punch in addition to the fire damage. Would I want to build the burning fists with Linked or call the whole thing a Multiple Power attack?

How much STR would a character need to lift a decent sized boulder? How much does a typical boulder supposed to weigh. A ton?...two tons?

I´ve been trying to create a power to simulate a "Chi Venom", that consists of a Martial Artist poisoning another´s Chi with an attack, so that everytime someone who is poisoned uses his powers (and they are based on Chi - SFX), he takes damage. It works until Dispelled. It would be something like this: Chi Poison 1d6 HKA Duration Advantages (Continuous, Persistent) +1½ Penetrating +½ Reduced Endurance (0 End) +½ Trigger (Everitime the target uses a Power, Resets automatically) +1 Extra Time (Full Phase) –½ Gestures –¼ No STR bonus –½ Does no Knockback –½ What do you think? Is this build correct? Comments please...

I have Multiform (which I use as a form of Shape Shifting into a variety of animals). I have a limitation on the Multiform that can, under certain conditions, trap me in the form for a long period of time (minimum of one hour). The limitation, however, only rarely goes off. We have arbitrarily set the limitation at a -1. However, I was wondering, how would I properly determine what the limitation cost should be? I have found nothing in the book that aids me in 'building' such a limitation (rarely going off, but long lasting when it does). The section on the limitation 'Limited Power' doesn't really help and I was wondering if anyone could give me some guidelines on …

All this HERO talk has me re-reading the rules. Now this is a dumb (embarasssingly dumb) questions for a Hero fan from 2nd ED. On a Move By, the Mover does 1/2 STR plus V/5 in dice of damage. The rules state that he takes 1/3 of the damage himself. So if Mr. Move-By hits for, lets say, 30 Stun and 10 Body, does Target-Man take 30/10 and Mr. Move-By takes 10/3? Or is it 20/7 and 10/3? Or 20/6, 10/4? I used to run my old (17 years ago) Champs game using option 1 (Target-Man takes full rolled damage and Mr. Move-By takes additional damage based on 1/3 of the rolled damage). Which is it?

Say I've got a power that only manifests with a great amount of training and focus. (That is, requires a particular Martial Art at a certain number of points spent, or a different power to already be known) Is this worth a limitation? My gut feeling is "no." but I thought I'd ask HEROdom...

I was wondering if anyone could help me with these questions. Two of them concern a Force Wall and the third one is about Area of Effect. Q1. I'm devising a teleport power that acts via a pair of vertical 'disks' that you walk through. One side of each disk is the entrance/exit of the teleport. The other side is a black disk that acts like a force wall. How do I determine how large the Force Wall should be? The book doesn't assume a vertical disk as a Force Wall's shape. Q2. In the afore mentioned teleport, the portal can have a variable size, ranging from a couple of centimeters across to about a hundred meters across (this allows me to teleport whether I'…

If I make a Multi-power with OIF, does every power have to be for the same focus if I want to apply the limitation to the base points as well? My current problem is that I have a player trying to make a Mandarin like character who uses several different power rings. Each ring has a specific "shtick" to it. They are definately OIF, but Im wondering if its rules legal to make one huge multipower and call it "Power Rings MP" with each different ring being its own separate focus....If he loses that SPECIFIC ring, he cant use that specific power, etc etc... Some of the rings will have several powers attached to it, while others might only have one. He'll never bea…

This is probably covered somewhere in the book, and has probably been asked here before, but... If a character has Teleport with the Increased Mass Adder, and only wants to teleport with an unwilling second person -- not teleport the second person seperately, just take them with -- does the Teleport need to be Usable Against Others? My first thought is "no", because you don't need to have UAA on your Flight or Running to Grab an unwilling target and move with them in tow. Thanks.

Hero is changing. The increased use of talents means that powers are being constructed for you, which have a lower AP than if you had bought them for yourself as the limitations are already taken into account. I was wittering on about constructing KB resistance on another thread, and I think this is a similar example: a power pre-constructed from others that has a lower AP as the limitations are in-built. I have generally observed AP limits in most of my campaigns, but I get the impression from many other posters that AP limits are generally ignored. Apart from regulating the immense potential for abuse in power frameworks (and I have quite seperate is…

Is it acceptable to post 5E conversion write-ups on the HERO Boards of characters from the following: Wrath of the Seven Horsemen The Zodiac Conspiracy The Olympians Enemies International Enemies for Hire Day of the Destroyer I'm not wanting to do write-ups on all of the characters in all of them (except for Wrath of the Seven Horsemen for my home game, and thought it might be nice to post), but wanted to know if it was acceptable before I began pursuing this. I know some previous groups (such as Protectors and VOICE) have been acceptable because the authors gave permission, but I wasn't sure where the above belonged. Please let me know when you can. T…

I'm trying to wrap my head around this one but can't quite come up with an answer. If a character has several powers (not necessarily in a Framework) attached to a single Focus, and you want that Focus to have some sort of detrimental effect if damaged/destroyed, how would you build it? For example, a wizard has a magical pendant that, when destroyed, Inflicts an EB, banishes him to the Phantom Zone, etc. Would you buy this as a Side Effect that always occurs when an action is taken, and if so, whould you buy it for each power with that particular Focus Limitation?

I have recently examined Variable Advantage more closely, and began thinking of the cost of END where Reduced END is employed. I ended up tweaking it. Here's what I sent to my gaming group: I think that it is not clear cut re END and 1/2 END costs. Bear in mind that although the Adv is doubled it isn't quite the same as a control cost. It represents a more useful Advantage, and Advantages are supposed to cost END. The AP of the power are represented, statically, as a certain value. The rule for Reduced END is that the value of the AP related to the Reduced END of course do not factor in, so that matters to - 5ER inexplicably ignores this entir…

Riiiight. I was looking at summoning and came up with a couple of discussion points. 1. Summoning vehicles: does it make any sense to always summon the same vehicle? I mean a fresh one each time is going to be so much more useful than one that has used up fuel and taken damage. I would go as far as suggesting that summoning the same vehicle each time is more of a limitation than an advantage: what do you think? 2. Variation in characters summoned. I want to be able to summon people, say up to 50 points. How much customisation can I apply, for instance if i want a biologist can i summon a biologist? If I want a linguist, can I swap points around to get some…

Or so the book "Spike and Chain" says. part of the reason for it is that when the swordsman tries to block the chain, the chain entangles the sword. The question is, how do you build it? The statement might be something like: xd6 hth attack. If blocked, chain entangles/grabs blocking limb/weapon. Point values? Mechanics? No clue there. Any thoughts?
