I was surprised by the response to MikeyMitchell's question in the Rules Questions forum http://herogame.dans.cust.servlets.net/forums/showthread.php?t=28762 Seems like far too much book keeping, especially as you should (apparently) track each drain even if it is from the same source. I've never tracked drains individually: has anyone else?

Assuming my character has a base, and I don't share it with my teammates (not greedy, just assume it's the Batcave and I'm in the JLA), how do I decide whether a DNPC my character cares about who never leaves the base is a DNPC of my character or of the base? Curious how GMs arbitrate this.

Mind swapping 1 2 3 4

Many years ago, just after the first Wild Cards book was published, the game group I was in at that time started a Wild Cards game. My character had the ability to swap minds with anyone he could see, after making eye contact. The swap would last until a "swapped" person made an Ego roll by enough to move back into their own body. Of course, by that time, my character had probably swapped with three or four more people, so the person *they* swapped with was probably now even further from *their* original body. And when *they* made that Ego roll, they'd swap back with the next mind down the chain... kind of like a bubble un-sort. I imagine it could get pretty confusing for…

Since the new format for the boards began displaying our ages in our signatures, I've noticed a distinct pattern. The bulk of us are around the same age: a bunch of 30ish to 40ish 'Gen Xers,' or whatever you'd call that group. I'm sure that RPGaming is generally continuing to be picked up by our societal counterparts among younger folks; the crowd that I see in my local hobby stores indicates as much to me. I wonder, though, if the HERO fanbase and demographic is something that's just going to grow old along with us. Is this style of gaming something that had a unique appeal to our age bracket? Is there something about the state of the geekdom hobbysphere (games,…

I'm working up a Transform power but I don't have FReD here at work (some drek about gaming being a drain on productivity...) and I haven't used the power for a character in many, many moons, so... I want the character to alter the shape of stone to be able to make things ranging from statuettes to a functioning boat. Strictly speaking, it would merely be changing only the form of the material while leaving all of the other characteristics intact -- this suggests a cosmetic (perhaps minor?) Transform. OTOH, the use of the power -- in game terms -- could conceivably add abilities to stone that it doesn't ordinarily possess. For example, if shaped into a boat…

Can you Mega Scale an Explosion so that the fade rate is 1DC/1" where 1" = 1Km?

I did an admittedly-hasty search and didn't see a dedicated thread (I'm sure Lord Liaden can correct for this!) but anyway I'd like to hear the "newbies" on this anyway along with old-timers... Many characters have a wide variety of contacts and favors. It's kind of hard to represent that directly - buying lots of favors isn't hard or anything, but it doesn't well represent the "always have a few favors on tap" thing. Similarly, and moreso with contacts, I often like to buy a contact for a whole rubric of related contacts. There are of course many ways to do this, I'm not saying that HERO doesn't provide tools, but HERO doesn't really give (I think) a clear-…

Something I would like to see in sourcebooks is, in addition to, or instead of, a package deal for a member of a race is an example of that race. Y'know, a typical Xenovore, a typical elf, etc.. As an example, Ben posted a "savage Xenovore" type over at SH Fandom, fully statted out. Or is there a way to apply a package deal to a basic stat-line to arrive at a typical example? Sometimes abook will hhave sample characterthat are not necessarliy typical. These usually dont match up with the '+5 strength' or whatever is given in the PD. I realize I may be missing a very basic precept of HERO so anyone have any input, maybe something official from Mr. Long? Tha…

Hi, so I've read the rules, pestered people on the board and bought the snack for my first Hero session, I started asking to my players which kind of character do they like to create ( we do creation together becasuse my players rarely read a single rule... they learn by gaming...lazy guys) The first three were very easy ( a Flash here, a Energy beam there..) and It was getting to my head ( Wow I learnt the game !!) Then the last one rises up and says " I want to control trees and flowers". GM: Control what ?? Would'nt you like better a speedster ??? PLAYER: NO I want to control tree !! So I flipped trough the book for a solution but... so far I was no…

Just brainstorming various uses of powers.... came up with an application for TK. If somebody couldn't fly under their own TK power, but could fly by, say, TK-grabbing onto a flying character, how would you build that? Simply Flight, with a disad?

Hey Gang, I crawled out of the ground long enough to visit a FLGS in my neck of the woods. They had 3 copies of Fifth Edition Revised & 4 copies of Sidekick. Now if you can wait for the Online Store to get these items back in stock I strongly suggest that you do. Hero will realize much more profit if you get items from them directly. However, if you're just dying to get a copy of FRED, or your players need Sidekick and they'll wander away from the game if you can't get it soon... then have it. (I'm guessing Hero would rather have you buy these items from somewhere else, than see games & campaigns go belly up.) Please PM me if you want th…

I'm trying to create a comics-style Valkyrie character for a Champions campaign and I need some help. I'm basically using a converted Marvel Valkyrie (Brunhilde of the Avengers). I need some advice on their ability to see the "Death Glow". This ability allows the Valkyrie to "Sense Death" on a person, in the form of an aura that surrounds the person. This death isn't absolute, and might be avoided. I was thinking of making it a: Detect (Approaching Death), Sense (Sight), or perhaps some form of Clairsentience? Help, please. Also, here's what I got so far for stats. I'm looking for anything else a "lesser god"/Asgardian might have. Not…

I was wondering how you might build a power that fools a Detect, not Invisibility but the Detector actually "sees" something different. An example of this would be several of the more powerful demons in my game, some of which can appear Angelic/Holy to those who can Detect Demons/Unholy. I thought a limited Mind Control, Triggered by the Detect, only to make the Detector see something different, but this seems too complicated for such a simple effect. Anyone have any ideas?

You used to get something for package deals, even if it was only a few points. Now? Nothing. They are a tool for the GM but you get no advantage for taking them, saving that 'it is easier to build your character'. Great. I'm not looking for any big giveaway here, but how about the disadvantages points from package deal do not count towards the category maximum points (i.e 50 points of psych lims would be ON TOP of any psych lims in the package deals). The package disadvantages still count towards the total disadvantage points, just not the points per category. How would that be?

I've done some searching, through books and the boards, for how many points in disads a physical limitation of Size 33m tall should give. So far I have found in MM&M a 5-pointer that gives no specific drawbacks, a 5-pointer that gives -2DCV and +2 to Perception as per 15 points in growth, a 10-pointer for a -4DCV and +4 Perception, and another 10-pointer for a -6DCV and +6 Perception. As you can see there does not seem to be any obvious formula in determining cost. My situation is this: I am creating transformers that range in size from 9-feet(Rumble) to well over 250-feet(Metroplex). I want to deal with the size issue by giving disads for the drawbacks an…

Not sure where to put this and it really isn't a "rules" question. I am looking for a random weather table. Something along the lines of a couple simple tables that I could roll dice and see what the weather is for the day for any genre. Any ideas?

Can I drum up a little support here for the idea of changing the name of the power 'Power Defence' to 'Adjustment Defence' or alternatively can one of you follow me around and write it out in full on all my character sheets so I don't keep getting it confused with Physical Defence when I abbreviate it? Huh?

After reading through the recent threads on drains and transfers and recovery from them, I was wondering how you would build a character that could recover faster than 5 CPs a turn. It feels like a regeneration variant, so maybe just add on a +2 Advantage when building a regeneration-like power, so it affects all stats and powers on a character? Would such a power add on top of the 5 CPs a character got back from drains/transfers? One interesting notion about having a power like this would be that the character would be like a battery of sorts for anyone with transfer, since the drained character would recover CPs faster than the draining character lost them. …

I asked Mr Long about this: Affects items carried: I was looking at this adder for force fields in 5ER 178. Can you tell me: does carrying require that you actually have the item/person off the ground, or just that you are capable of getting them off the ground and have contact (perhaps by a grab). How many limbs do you need to devote to 'carrying' and how, if at all, does using the adder diminish the carrier's ability to attack others? He said he'd already said enough in 5ER and the FAQ. I've looked in the 5ER and the FAQ (in fact I checked before I posted the question) and can't see anything addressing this: can anyone help?

Allright assembled Herodom here is the problem. the math. yes we keep on getting this so I want to put it to rest for ever. let me put you in my shoes. I have 1 year in an advertising art degree (probaly never will finish). my group has two math majors, an engineering major two computer majors, an Electrical engineer with a double masters and a materials science/millitary major. everyone has _at least_ a bachelors. two of us have Hero down pat. me and the millitary guy. even in random discussion with other gamers I get the math issue as the leading problem with hero. Now then what I want to find that I think will solve the problems …

I was reading through the Ultimate Brick, and I was struck by inspiration. (Funny how that works.) I want to make a brick (duh) who absorbs powers, and is strong. Can do that so far. But I want to make it so he can cause a burst of power that drains his absorbtion pool. I can't figure out whether this should be a built into the Absorption as being able to aid STR or a No Range, Explosive EB, or... Should I build the NR, Exp EB with a Side Effect: Drains Absorbtion Pool? And if I go with the second option, how big a side effect should it be?

I have a ninja sorceror that wants to manifest Images of himself, and use his powers through them. I know that means the powers he uses need to be Indirect +3/4. Say for example he has a 2D6 HKA, in the form of a sword but the image uses it; its not a focus. A 1D6 RKA AP +1/2 and can use str dmg +1/2 in the form of a shuriken or throwing dagger; same thing its used by the image and not a focus. Then say he has a Missle Deflection for thrown objects and arrows and projectiles that he wants to use with the image. Would I put the indirect advantage on it or just use the +1 advantage deflect at range. I see building the image/invisibility powers in the elemental control.…

MnM has a very very good rule about HP: you can spend one of them to have for a round any other power that is "in concept" with your character... Your level of the power is based on "converting" 1-1 the points of the power you are stunting from to the new power (so if you have an Energy Blast 10 (10x2pt) you can convert it in a Energy Blast Area (cost = 3pt/level, so you get a level 6 power for a round)) (yes, I know... The rule is a little different... stunting causes fatigue and HP cure fatigue). Do you think it would be possible to "import" this rule in Hero for a Heroic campaign? Should I use AP or Real points? --- bye

Hi, I have some problem in the use of combat maneuvers and maybe someone here can help me. In the table of page 254 the Sweep Maneuver is stated as a 1 Phase action then in the description the rulebook says "Characters may use sweep with most combat maneuvers. For example, a character can sweep Disarm several enemies" But Disarm is a 1/2 phase maneuver, wouldn't in this case the character operate a 1+1/2 phase in a segment ?? A thing that I understand is strictly forbidden from what I read at pag 233 "Full Phase action take character's entire phase; he can do nothing else" At this point I'm quite sure I missed something very important and since I'm a a week away …
