Assuming a modern (Champions, Dark Champions) character had normal socialization (and no seriously crippling character defects that would harm social interaction) and schooling (High School level) and actually payed some real attention in class (or had above-average intelligence and soaked them just by exposure) in a decent school, what Skills would you assume (s)he would have, in any case, above and beyond the canon Everyman list (whether the character should get them free, or pay 1 CP for the familiarity is a secondary issue, for now) I was thinking of: Computer Programming 8- KS: History 8- KS: Literature 8- Oratory 8- Seduction 8- SS: Biology 8- …

A lovely young Princess in a Fantasy setting has had a curse lain on her by witch. Spurned by her father the king, the foul enchantress has deemd that his daughter shall never know a love. Now, if the princess ever takes a lover (in the physical sense), that person will suffer horrible and fatal misfortune. Now the curse is basically inflicted Unluck (Scads of it) vai a Transform. Should the princess pay for this as a power (She's a PC), or get a Physical Limitation? Technically, she COULD use this to her benefit by seducing someone, but it is not in the character's nature to think along those lines or do so.

I have an archer character in Champions - and was looking to build him some EMP Arrows ... would those be bought as a dispel or suppress?? The reason I'm confused is that the burst of an emp field would be a dispell vs. electronics.....and a Supress would be a field that would shut down electronics until they left the radius...so I'm largely confused as to how to do it

I don't know about this but... ...a common theme of criticism I hear a lot is related to Advantage abuse and various over-effectivenesses in powers, that sort of thing. I wonder how true this was IN COMPARISON to now? And I wonder if END pricing is related? END used to be a more valuable commodity. It was far harder to get to 0 END, because of a funky construction wherein, basically, you paid 1/4 of the price of the AP for each halving of END. So 1/2 END = 1/4 times the AP. To get to 1/4 END, one paid that 1/4 amount AGAIN. Each halving of END rounds in the player's favor, so when the PC got to 1 END for the power, he only had to pay the amount of 1/4 of t…

Is END really necessary for any roleplaying genre? I am tending towards "no." ALlow me to explain. I have run about 3 supers campaigns, and 2 nonsupoers HERO games (mini-campaigns). END is cheap to buy, so everyone buys alot of it, or structures their powers so that it is rarely an issue. But it DOES require alot of bookkeeping for player. END is sort of a non-issue in heroic (non-superheroic) campaigns. What is END meant to simulate? A character's power that is so taxing it can only be used rarely? What about just buying it as a charge? A power which is effective but wipes the player out? Buy it with a limitation that drains the PC's STUN by so many…

I just had this zany idea for a setting: Its our own, seemingly mundane world, but some people have begun to manifest their latent-self image or strong fantasies they have. This is especially the case with people suffering from various borderline personality disorders, including psychotics (not specifically violent psychotics), multiple personality disorders, lycanthropy, delusions of granduer, messiah complexes, gamers , true eccentrics, etc. Also, people who are clinically and seriously depressed might shrink while people who are manic-compulsive might grow - and God help you if you're bipolar - or a LARP enthusiast. A significant minority of the population (…

There has been a lot of discussion, and I feel a good consensus, on the topic of Limitations, and the fact that they are not created equal. One -1/2 Limitation is not nearly as limiting as another "canon" -1/2 limitation. (Say IAF vs. 14 or less activation as an example IMO). To this point, I have two questions: First, Has anyone out there "rewritten" the standard limitations in the book to better reflect the actual worth of the limitation in their games? Second, specifically, does anyone but me feel that Focus is WAY too much of a price break? I mean, it may be my style of play, but the benefits of extra points to spend tends to FAR outweigh the occasio…

How in Hero do you build "Tag-team" attacks? i.e. Colossus throwing Wolverine. Does Wolverine buy "extra movement with a -1 lim Only when thrown but Col" Then Colossus buys an RKA with the OAF focus of Wolverine I know you don't need a power to pick someone up and throw them. But this seems different. It's a team effort to create a new attack. I'm trying to create an NPC team that works well together. I want these buddy attacks to show their training, and team skills. Every video game I can think that has 2 or more players playing at the same time has these. Guantlet, TMNT, X-men I'm sure their are others. Any thoughts?

One of out group made a villain as a Hunted, that is his equal almost exactly. Not uncommon, but here is the catch. He wants his powers and this Hunted powers to not work on each other, (with out any point spending). A novel idea that they can't effect each other, but my concern is that he villain my wreck more havoc on the rest of the hero group since he can not effect the PC. So should I let this go? Of would the threat of him harming another member be good enough for the trade off?

Problem statement: Autofire is treated with special rules for stacking. We also know some Advantages are way more dangerous as stacked. We also know that this complicaton of adding special rules for each new dangerous Advantage is very bad business in a game which should be streamlined and consistent - not a sort of RPG version of "spaghetti code"! Solution? I am starting to formulate that perhaps we should focus on a rule to convert some Advs to Adders which are then multiplied; I think this may allow us to wipe away some of the "special" rules for Autofire AND possibly identify and treat similarly a few other dangerous Advantages that are really dangerous t…

It says in FREd that Autofire when used with Images does not get the additional +1 Advantage cost which is normally applied to non-attack powers used with Autofire. However, it doesn't really go on to state how Autofire would work with Images, just stating that Images that overlap don't add their perception penalties together. Anyone have any ideas on how to work an Autofire Image? The idea I have is a character who can make multiple images of himself to confuse attackers as to his real position. What I want is the Perception penalty to be based on how many Images are seen. If there is only 1 Image (the enemy sees two characters) then there is no penalty to …

I was working on a Multipower concept and it got me to thinking. I want the multipower to, as a whole, be limited to X times per day. But I want some slots, once activated, to last longer than instant (which, with my understanding of charges on a multipower doesn't fly). How would I do this? At first I considered giving the slots with a longer duration Lingering, but I'm not sure if that is really the right way to do it. Basically, I want something that might function like a set of spells that can be used X times per day, regardless of which ones you use, but the individual spells can have different durations (one might be a blast, but a FF might last as long as …

Hello! I'm going to be running a Hero game for my group of players, starting sometime in the next few weeks. We're all experienced gamers, but we've never played Hero before - always D&D or other d20 variations. I have a good grasp of the rules, but I'm having a lot of difficulty figuring out how to create "encounters." In d20, they have a nice system for gaging the difficulty of a fight in regards to the players abilities - maybe I'm just too dependant on it. We'll be playing in the Champions universe, and the characters will be standard superheroes (200 points, 150 disadvantage points). I guess I'm just looking for advise from experienced game masters …

Well, I never did get to complete HERO Goku (someone else did that already) but I did complete Drizzt Do'Urden and his panther Guenhwyvar, for all the Drizzt fans out there. G'day In some genres (pulp, modern/action, western, Victorian, espionage, most SF…) most characters are heroic humans without powers or spells. I'd be pleased if the books intended to support campaigns in those genres (Star HERO, Pulp HERO, Western HERO, Regency HERO, Dark Champions) were to include a character sheet adapted specially for such characters. Regards, Brett

I'm working on a character concept and have some questions about OIHID. The character is a new member of an interstellar organization of Guardians. By focusing, saying the Guardian's mantra, and being in a situaion where his powers will be needed to help others he is transformed into a brick hero. Now my questions: 1) Since the OIHID requires time and a way to stop the transformation, is what I have enough (focus, incantations, and situation) not enough or even too much? 2) In his human form his powers are in "stand by" mode and perform repair and maintenance duties. I bought this as Regerative Healing, only in normal ID. How much of a limitation is it worth? I …

Okay, having seen the house rules thread, lots of great ideas, interesting variations. But all those being said, let's say you took over HERO tomorrow (Steve Long handed it to you on a Silver Age platter). What would you actually change in the HERO system? I think most of us (?) recognize our house rules really speak to our personal quirks rather than that which we would "impose" on the game system. When it's all said and done, I'm not sure what I'd really change. I might refine EC to be clearer that the linkage on the powers being drained requires some common SFX on the part of the Drainer, although I might go so far as to "simply" write that into the …

I am sorry if this is in the wrong place. I am hours away from our first Hero game in years, and I don't know where my villians book is. All I need is a viper agent from the old games. Does anyone have a link or PDF of one? I can make one fun running out of preperatin time. Thanks a Million!

Just to be sure I understand the rules well, if a character has Enraged (NOT Berserk)... And Knocks Out or kills each and every possible "appropriate" target related to the original one (all those who insulted/wounded him, plus their minions and equipment), yet he still doesn't manage to break out of Enraged (well, it may happen), does he snap out of rage anyway, or has to start breaking up nearby stuff ? can he keep friends and bystanders safe in any case ? If the character hasn't yet managed to defeat at least one target, but reaches the end of the Turn, can he still try to recover from Enraged? If the character runs out of End, yet doesn't manage to reco…

I am not sure if this was the rule when I first played with version 1 a million years ago, but we are getting ready to play our first V4 game. Q: What is the reason you start combat on Seg 12? If you have a blazingly fast (High SPD) Hero, and a slow as dirt Bad Guy; They both can attack on segment 12. Why not just start on Seg 1?

Those of you who've read the Champios genrebook are probably familiar with the Quick Superhuman Generator and the various sets you can randomly roll (or just pick) to make a superhuman character in minutes. What I'd like to focus on is the Skill Sets. I love the idea of using Skill Sets for fleshing out a character. I typically like to leave between 30-50 point after Powers and Characteristics when making a character for Skills and Perks. What I'd like to do is expand and diversify the list in the book. What I need help with is creating all of these sets. I'm looking for sets between 10-30 points, each set containing all the Skills common to a particular vocatio…

Creating a package deal for demons in my campaign world who have assumed corporeal form. Among other things, such beings can get away with smoking heavily, drinking heavily, and consuming junk food by the truckload without suffering a single ill effect (stuff that's bad for humans is good for demons). I know to use Life Support: Immunity for the first two parts of this, but how do I model the third? And for those who might bring it up, I'll thinking about reserving Full Life Support almost excussively for noncorporeal form (there have to be some drawbacks to manifesting as flesh and blood, afterall). Thoughts?

A point that puzzles me a bit... Is it correct to use the Focus Limitation for hyper-tech or magical equipment Powers that are meant to be physically located in the character's base, but whose effects may follow him or manifest "in the field" too, so to speak ? Some examples: the cloning "vat" that resurrects the character (via Duplication with Extra Time and/or Gradual Effect, and Trigger) after he is killed the "beam me up, scotty" teleporting equipment that teleports the character back to safety of his home/base, if he is near death/utters a vocal or mental command/types the radio code (Trigger and/or Concentration/Gestures/Incantation), or lets the…

Gotta bit of a thought to toss out to the wolves... When you use a Transform to turn a targe to stone (or any other inanimate substance or object), does the target retain awareness of its surroundings, capacity for thought and other aspects of the mind, and can that mind be contacted with Mental Powers or contact other minds with Mental Powers? It occurs to me that just turning someone to stone (a purely physical transformation) won't change anything about the mind, but would it still allow to block that mind from the world around it?
