  2. In 1590, Portuguese named Taiwan "ilha formosa (beautiful island)." To the Chinese, it was always Taiwan. From 1895 to 1945, Taiwan was ruled by Japan, who introduced baseball and demanded rice and sugar. Taiwanese opposed Japanese rule. Japan developed Kaohsuing into a modern port city, with an aluminum processing plant, power stations, and light industry.

  5. When Americans speak about Pulps they always refer to the past - stories from the 20s to maybe 50s. Are there still pulp stories that are published regularly? I mean that are not reprints but written and published today. Germany actually has a pulp magazine scene that is very much alive - only it is not recognized as such. There is Perry Rhodan, a Sci-Fi series now going since 1962, currently running number 2799 (with multiple reruns of the older books), John Sinclair, Scotland Yards demon- and ghosthunter with a villains' gallery that puts Marvel's to shame (# 1845), Lassiter (a Western series, currently at # 2157), G-man Jerry Cotton (# 2600), Maddrax (post-apocaly…

  8. {Standard disclaimer: As always (or at least almost always) I am looking at 5th Edition stats and concepts.....thanks.} After re-watching (for perhaps the 15th time) the 1937 film version of James Hilton's Lost Horizon this morning I found myself toying with the idea of a campaign where the PC's are, as the subject line suggests, agents of the lamasery in the Valley of the Blue Moon. Not that they would come and go from the valley, or even fully know of its existence. Rather I am considering what might be a motley group of 'do gooders' who could be involved in endeavors ranging from the collection of items of wisdom for shipment to the lamasery, to perhaps even forest…

  10. Crossposted because I was asked to on the ground this is perfect for a pulp villain. I didn't know lots of pulp villains had Goblinoid minions... Terrifying Package Terrifying Aspect: +4/+4d6 Striking Appearance (vs. all characters) Commanding Voice: Oratory Knows how to inspire minions: +2/+2d6 Striking Appearance (vs. [Goblinoids]) Unrelenting Fear: Uncontrolled (+1/2) (10 Active Points) applied to PRE (Assumes base PRE 20) (Effects of a PRE attack do not fade, until something else makes an even bigger PRE attack) Do NOT fail me: Area Of Effect (4m Radius; +1/4), Persistent (+1/4), Personal Immunity (+1/4), MegaScale (1m = 1 km; …

Saw this blog post I found while searching for something else and thought I'd pass it along. While it's intended for police work, it definitely looks like something a mad scientist would bulid. And if you're wondering who in blazes would have thought this up--just check the name of the author.

I don't think I ever posted this. It's a little something I threw together a while back. I realized that dinosaurs (true dinosaurs, not to include marine lizards, flying reptiles, etc) didn't really vary all that much. By grafting a few options onto a generic framework, pretty much any known dinosaur can be recreated in Hero terms. This isn't incredibly polished, but it may be useful to someone out there.

As this is the hero system web site, I think it safe to say we can agree Pulp Hero is the best pulp game out there. But what would be your second choice? I know of only two pulp themed games. Adventure a part of the trinity universe, and Spirit of the Century. I'd have to put the order 1.Pulp Hero 2.Spirit of the Century 3.Adventure. Are there any others, and what would you put in the second spot?

Not precisely Pulp, but pretty much close enough: Please check it out and support the project! It's not listed up there yet, but I'm going to be writing one of the stretch goal adventures. It's a great scenario that's easily adaptable to Pulp Hero, so I'd really like to write it.

If you have a spiritualist or other occult sort in a pulp campaign, you can Do Things to that character for what seems like spurious reasons of national security. From a book I just finished.... On Tuesday, 25 November 1941 HMS Barham was sunk by U-331 in the Mediterranean, losing 862 of 1258 aboard. The U-boat went deep immediately to evade depth charge attack, and while it did escape, they didn't see the sinking or identify what they'd hit. The Royal Navy intercepted and decoded the U-Boat skipper's report afterward; he reported that he had torpedoed an unknown British battleship with unknown effect. So the navy suppressed the news, waiting several weeks to inf…
