Pulp Hero

Two-fisted thrills and adventure in the world of the Twenties and Thirties!

  1. Started by mattingly,

Everyone with half a functioning brain knows that diving on a live hand grenade to save your friends is one of the single most selfless, balls-out heroic acts of valor that any human being can perform. It takes a special, rare kind of person to come face-to-face with their own destruction, resist every natural impulse of self-preservation, and unhesitatingly give themselves up in a final, purely-selfless feat of bravery, trading in the most precious thing a human has to offer – their life – so that others might live. It's such a paragon of ultimate selfless human sacrifice that nowadays it's the standard go-to analogy for everything from taking all the blame for a team-wi…

  4. More like Pulp meets D&D, actually. And why not? Shadowrun did D&D meets cyberpunk! I tackle Weird Adventures on my blog, and I'm currently figuring out how to create a bunch of character templates. Character templates are different from the package deal approach to character creation; I'm basically doing a Star Wars d6 approach to character creation, but using the Hero System. Sort of a quick chargen option to make it easy for pickup games. Check it out!

For those people looking for inspiration or background for their Pulp Hero games, http://www.archive.org/details/oldtimeradio is a collection of radio programs from the Twenties, Thirties and Forties. No Shadow, I'm afraid, but you can listen to adventures of Superman, Batman, The Cisco Kid, Phillip Marlowe and Strange Doctor Weird (?!) Then finish up with some Glen Miller.

  6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm6QCZk_yvs While the Xenozoic Tales setting does not take place in the 1920s or 1930s, it is a very pulp-ish setting, and so I feel my question is most appropriate on this board. What kind of major lost technology do you think would be worth basing a quest around? A nuclear bomb has appeared in the comics, and solar panels were mentioned, so those are right out.

This is from AOPA magazine June 2012 pages 56 to 63 and based off of manufacture’s calculations. Boeing B-17 “Flying Fortress” Richard Williams a reporter for Seattle Times dubbed it the Flying Fortress. In production from 1935 to 1945, 12,731 of models A through G (last and most heavily armed model with 12 x .50 cal BMG) were constructed by Boeing, Douglas, and Vega. Eleven are still airworthy today. The belly gun is a Sperry ball turret with two .50 cal Browning machine guns. The ball turret gunner could not wear a parachute while in his battle station. The B-17 is an “electric” plane, electrical operated hydraulics where used. This is one of…

  11. http://www.glasnost.de/hist/usa/1935invasion.html some background: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Color-coded_War_Plans It occurs to me that if one is planning an alternate history pulp or supers game, the above link is a gold mine. The US military drew up contingency plans for war with just about everybody. My personal favorite is War Plan Red-Orange, a contingency for fighting a two-ocean war with the UK and Japan simultaneously(the two countries were allied until 1924).

I just watched the first episodes of the new Avatar series, and it is certainly filled with a Pulp/Fantasy feeling, set in that world's version of the 1920s. Has anyone else seen it?

Start here: http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?38174-Giant-Footprint-shown-by-Michael-Tellinger-in-South-Africa/page3 In 1912 a giant foot print was found as an impression in granite. It is 4' long indicating a 26' (7.5 meter) tall humanoid. It is considered a sacred place. It is estimated to be 200 million years old. Nearby were found crystal skulls, weird carvings and giant bones. That's what they say. Read all of the comments to get the full length story from the local tribesman who had been visiting the site since 1937! Cthulhu? Bible Giants? Very large ancient astronauts? YOU DECIDE!

  22. I'm interested in Pulp Hero, and had read somewhere there was going to be a possible 6th edition release sometime this year. However, given everything that's been going on, is this remotely possible? If not, I saw a used copy for 5th edition I could purchase and convert if necessary. If I go with the latter option, how hard would it be to use the material? Thanks.
