Bought Fantasy Hero yesterday after work. Excellent work guys! The interior art is excellent. It's been a long time since I've bought any Hero products, and I have to say you've won me back. I'm officially throwing off the chains of D20 fantasy role playing. This afternoon, I begin the task of creating the magic system for my existing campaign, or should I say 're-creating'. With hero, I can finally do it the way I WANT to do it! I haven't been this excited about fantasy role playing in a looooong time.

Awhile back I researched tracking and wrote up this document. It can be used purely for flavor so that players can GM's can describe tracks, or how they track, or how they conceal tracks. It does have some mechanics in it - so you can figure out penalties for the age of tracks, terrain type, etc.

Spells and monsters have been done to death, almost... so lets try our hands at some real estate. To kick things off, here is one I made for a low-point/low-fantasy game recently. You may want to replace the distinctive features with something more appropriate to your own setting. Cattle Ranch Val Char Cost 4 BODY 2 3 DEF 3 4 SIZE 8 Length 10.08", Width 5.04", Area 50.80" DCV -6 Characteristics Cost: 13 Cost Power END 0 Surrounding Fence for Grounds: 2 DEF, 2 BODY 0 Description: a 3"x5" House, a 4"x7" Barn/Stable with a 2"x3" overhead loft for feed and fodder, and a 1"x1" outhouse Powers Cost: 0 Cost Skill 3 Cattle Ran…

Hello all, In the game world I am currently creating there is a curse that has been placed on all arcane magic. This curse was placed by a god and slowly transforms the users into a reptile. The curse was placed by the god of magic who is VERY evil and is represented as a shapeshifting reptile. Now, the cultures of the world view arcane spell-casters as inherently evil and are thus fearful/hateful of them. This does not stop players from following this path, it merely makes them have a high need for secrecy. What I am looking for are suggestions on how to handle the slow transformation into a lizard/snake as the spell-casters utilizes his/her powers. My…

Hello Everyone. I am new to these boards, but have been lurking for a little bit. I am thinking about switching our game to Fantasy Hero from another system that I am becoming tired of (no names, not 3E). I have not played any Hero system games since 2nd Edition Champoins, so if anyone can help me understand what I need to know to play/run Fantasy Hero I would appreicate it. Thanks. Tony

As a GM, there is no resource I desire more than good maps. Those in many Harnworld products (by Columbia Games) are excellent, but I would love to get my hands on others. I'm particularly interested in relatively realistic settings in which FH combat might take place: a castle or keep, a bridge or ford, maybe an inn. Detail is a plus, as is ease of convertability to a HERO-scaled hexmap. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Okay, so I've moved to Iowa. I'm trying to find a group, so I post on these fair boards, nothing. I look at the local gaming stores, nothing. What do you guys do to get players? I had this problem in Minnesota, too, although I had attributed that to the fact that I was way out in the country. Nightshade

Chello! God almighty, I just got my copy of Fantasy Hero via UPS. this thing is mucking huge!!!! 416 pp. vs Fred's 372!!! Natch, I have only had a chance todo much more than flip through it. My wife is happy with the Cat People....something besides an elf for a change. Hoody hoo! Really liked the bibliography section and what I've read of mass combat--my campaigns always seem to get into mass combat at some point regardless of what game I play. And I just got a copy of Chaosium's Thieves World set in the mail on saturday. I feel a low fantasy campaign in the making. Now to assemble the party! ::chuckles evilly:: Hats off to ya, Steve. I'll…

Hey all, Quick question. One of the things we adopted in our previous fantasy game (not Fantasy Hero), was the ability of our healers to do a Chant that was in effect a low level, area effect heal that could eventually put everyone in the area up to full. This was more of a hit point system, but I would like the healers to be able to do the same thing. I realize cumulative is not supposed to be allowed for healing (why i am not sure), so am looking for suggestions on this.

Your average swordsman, gets a -3 penalty for off hand and a – 2 shield penalty (with a med. shield) . So your average Joe Swordsman is a t a -5 to shield bash. Am I missing something here, or is that just a little harsh. I don’t know about any one else, but on two occasions I have padded up grabbed a wooden shield and a blunted sword and gotten beat to a pulp. But I am here to tell you that a shield bash is not that difficult to do. I know, I have done it several time, err, ummm, I got disarmed a lot. But that just goes to prove my point. If I can do easily, a trained fighter should be able to do it with out a -5 penalty. OK, average Soldier, DEX10, OCV 3, with…

Having powered up the phoenix, I'm not so sure I actually need it powered up after all. I may just stick the Safe in Intense Heat part and a slightly weaker version of the Firey Rebirth power on the Bestiary's phoenix in order to make it fill my needs. Still, maybe this powerful giant phoenix would prove useful to someone. Apologies for the so-so formatting. I don't really like any of the ways Fantasy HERO listed for handling potions and such. So it just occiured to me: Why not just have the alchemist buy KS/PS Alchemy Skills and use them? If a player wants to make a particular potion, the GM just decides: a) Whether it's possible. How long it takes. c) What components are necessary and how difficult they are to obtain (which would likely require a KS: Alchemy Roll). d) What bonuses or penalties (if any) are applied to the final PS: Alchemy Roll. So the player doesn't actually have to buy any of the Powers the potions represent, but the GM can easily balance this by making trickier potions …

1) Steve, is there any word on the current status of the Grimoire? Inquiring minds want to know! 2) Is there going to be a module for Hero Designer for FH? Thanks!

The Free Stuff section of the site has a new category: Modules and Adventures. The first adventure on the list is The Tomb of Rakoss the Undying, an FH adventure submitted by Bob Pennington. Enjoy! http://www.herogames.com/FreeStuff/mods.htm

It's been several years since I last ran my FH campaign, and now that it looks like it will be starting up again I am revamping my magic system. The thing I never liked about magic in FH is that mages never had any variety of spells, ever. They had attack spells, defense spells, and maybe a movement spell. It always felt more like superheroes than heroes. I came to the conclusion in the intervening years that the problem was that a) the players always made their own spells and therefore made them as combat-usable as possible which meant minimal limitations, and point a) caused the spells to cost so much that they rarely had more than 4 or maybe 5 spells to s…

Looking through FH now. Noticed a few things that I think might be either mistakes or bad ideas. Wondering how you guys see it: a) The potions are all built as Powers with Delayed Effect, OAF Fragile, and Charges. So far, so good, but not of them include any sort of Limitation representing the sort of rare ingredients that normally go into potions. The assumption seems to be that the potion-maker has a constant supply of ingredients that he never has to pay for. That's contrary to how I've usually seen this handled in games. I my not sure I want my players making potions for free. Why weren't ingredient-related Limitations like the ones for Expendable Foci used, as…

Do you use the perk system for wealth, or coin-based accounting like in D&D? I've tried wealth systems a few times now and it always feels very arbitrary. It seems to boil down to "do I want you to have that right now or not?" and takes away a lot of the detail of adventuring. Accounting provides motivation (when you run out), it can provide a goal to work for, keeps things fair and non-arbitrary, and lends an aspect of realistic detail. On the other hand, some players find it tedious and annoying. Do the two systems work better with different styles of campaign? I can imagine that a purely political campaign would work well with a wealth perk (fortune is co…

Two fighting humans with the same DEX need 11 or less to hit each other. Two fighting inch-high pixies with the same DEX need -1 or less to hit each other. Even if they're performing maneuvers that have up to a -4 DCV penalty, they still only hit each other on a 3 on 3d6 (1 in 216 chance). Two fighting 500-foot tall titans with the same DEX need 23 or less to hit each other. Even if they're performing maneuvers that have up to a -6 OCV penalty, they still only miss each other on an 18 on 3d6 (1 in 216 chance). Is this OK with you? If not, what do you do about it? Granted, I'm using the most extreme examples to make a point, but this problem exists at an…

Here are three methods for creating scrolls as templates. That is, you take one of these templates and apply it to any spell you know in order to create a one-use scroll of that spell. I think I am going to allow all of these as options. METHOD I: Naked Trigger This is a new "create scroll" power, purchased as a naked advantage that can be applied to any known spell up to 40 active points. It requires one day and expensive ink, and produces a scroll. Creating a scroll also requires a skill roll against PS:Scribe. Skill rolls for scribing and spellcasting (if any) are made at -6. The spell on the scroll is triggered by reading. Reading a scroll requires…

I'm creating a campaign world and its magic system(s). Call it Middle Fantasy in aim - all sorts of non-human humanoids about, classic monsters in far-off places, and magic isn't just legendary. But it's not something that's a routine fact-of-life for the vast majority of humans at least, not in the current age, and you don't have mages taking on armies or reshaping the world in the current age either. I'm wondering about scrolls. Modelling D&D is in no way a goal. Given that, how much call is there to do scrolls beyond as normal non-magical written media? Magic suitable for combat use exists, assuming you can swallow typical full phase casting, gestures, incanta…

I want potions to be cheap enough to be somewhat common, but not so cheap they're sold in stores, and I want the ability to control/limit availability. I'm debating between (A) Trigger with OAF: expensive/rare components, or ( Independent with ~250 continuing charges Trigger without rare components seems like a giveaway with no real limit on production. I could see a group whipping up three dozen potions for an expedition, or selling them to solve all their money problems. Independent is expensive, but with lots of continuing charges makes the cost-per-dose vanishingly small. Anyone else have alternatives you're using? Mike

I'm trying to do a spell. I'd like to conjure a sword out of thin air. After it's conjured, it's a perfectly ordinary sword, for anyone to use, to take away wherever, a sword that can go on to have a perfectly ordinary sword-y life just like all the other swords that started life in a forge. I'd rather not just use Major Transform if I can avoid it, since, after all, we're not supposed to use Major Transform for creating weapons. We're supposed to use Usable on Others. So I go there. It starts off without range. If you get it range, it still requires line of sight and will go away if the caster is unconscious. But getting it 0 END and Persistent can fix that. …
