Well in the paper recently, editorial on how about 1/3 of students locally dont have proper internet access for the virtual learning and will probably essentially lose a year of learning.

Yeah, I've been thinking about that. Balancing various needs for students is quite a tightrope over a 'gator pit for school officials this year, one I'm sure they never thought they'd signed up for.

And there's the aspect that schools have been de facto day care and food bank for many, for some time.

 

Reopening the schools is easily the most complex issue related to the pandemic that we have, IMO.

In our opening message from the superintendent, he said that this is the primary reason that our schools are open starting Monday.

That is unfortunately expected, tho.  The good news may be that their curve's looking like it's flattening.  Even if we assume they're missing cases, it should largely be true that the missed cases have mostly always been missed, so that may not invalidate that their curve is flattening...just the level at which it's flattening.

 

Unless things change soon, the US per capita death rate will rise to probably #4, not counting Andorra and San Marino (each has well under 100K people).  Within a couple of weeks, we look to pass Spain, the UK, Italy, Sweden, and Chile...and probably be passed by Brazil, where the response failure has been absolute.  Their case statistics have been consistent since mid-June...and their death statistics since early June.  And there's no real evidence of it changing.

It is nice to see that people are being less stupid, and case numbers trending down nicely.  But, yes, I dread what we fear will happen.  Might take another couple of weeks to show.

Employees at stores should no longer tell customers they have to wear a mask if the person appears to be upset, makes threats, or displays violence (including using a swear word, an insult, or physical violence of any sort).

It's not all casino operators. The company that I work for has security at each door, manning a thermal imaging camera rig to check for elevated temperatures on staff and guests. Wearing masks is enforced, and every guard station has a supply. There's hand sanitizer positioned about every 8 feet on the main aisles of the casino, disinfecting wipes are available throughout the casino and hotel tower,  and chairs have been removed from table games and slot machines to enforce social distancing. The Poker Room has plexiglas dividers that shield every player and the dealer. Everything gets cleaned multiple times a day. Everyone was required to get tested before we reopened, and there have been at least three rounds of random testing, as well.

Of all the impacts Trump has had, IMO the worst, most damaging, and most repulsive has been forcing the technical arms to serve political whims, rather than the facts.

Three weeks ago the bars were shut down on the island.

 

Two weeks ago, the beaches and parks were shut down.

 

That not having enough effect, now they're back to staying at home.

The agency also now says it is up to local public health experts to decide whether testing is needed for people who attend a public or private gathering of more than 10 individuals when masks are not worn and social-distancing guidelines are not followed. "

 

Administration officials on the White House's coronavirus task force ordered the CDC to make the change, which ignores all the known science about how to slow the spread of the virus.

 

But making the change probably will reduce the number of people getting tests which will reduce the increase in the number of confirmed cases (though the government's testing czar is quoted in the article as saying that the Administration doesn't think this change will reduce the number of people who are tested).

You left out the part where health professionals have been begging for a more stringent lockdown for over a month.  And that hospitals here will run out of beds in 2-3 weeks, and are already trying to fly in nurses from the mainland.  This is just the culmination of weeks of half-assed measures from a corporate-owned leadership.

Feel free to add details. There's almost no island news in the national media and honestly I don't spend much time scouring their local newspapers.

This vacillation over health-care decision-making by the Trump regime is disgusting. It's up to the state and local governments, except when Trump doesn't like what the state and local governments do, then the federal government has full authority, except if things go wrong then it's the state's fault.
