I took a powerful warning from the story. Not that a particular virus would wipe us out, but that we must be wary of our own character flaws -- our pride, our selfishness, our lust for all we survey. Cory Doctorow wrote a modern take on that story and his publishers have made it free to download (on Cory's request). I will see if I can find a link... Ragitsu Posted March 25, 2020 Report Share Posted March 25, 2020 I'm not so much worried about myself; should I perish, the world will not have suffered a great loss and if the price paid for survival is "merely" a compromised lung capacity, well...I wasn't planning on running a marathon in any event. My extended family (and fellow citizens basically flouting good hygiene and reasonable quarantine measures) are what weigh heavily as of late. We probably all already know this, but not everybody does, and it's vital. If I knew how to edit video links, I'd have just posted that part and left all the rest out, because that is what people -- everybody, really -- need to hear no matter where they live. My hope is that people will get the message and start practicing self-discipline: it is the best way to combat this malady until a vaccine/and or treatment is perfected. Seems like that should be up to the doctors. Especially in the severe cases where the potential side-effects of the treatment are ... not dying or - at worst - still dying? That is a pretty serious position to take before the science is even finished on it. Talk about knee-jerk reactions. I wonder who's going to be accountable for that decision.
