Reading Goodkind, had a thought: How would you dispel, aid, transfer, whatever, against a Skill Based magic? They don't have any magic powers, they just have skill. Would you do it as a drain versus the skill, or what? And to adjust the skill, that wouldn't require much, because skills don't cost much. Maybe hardening the skill? Can you do that?

Slightly off topic, but I just really don't understand this one. I went to my local gaming store (well, the largest local one) yesterday and looked for the new FH. It was not there yet, which is not all that surprising. I don't bother anymore to ask them when they will get products in, because the answer is always "Oh, that is in next weeks shipment", without even looking at their order system. I thought I would be proactive and do what many others on this board have done, so I asked about pre-ordering a copy. Answer: No. Offered to pay full price up front. Answer: No. When I finally asked why, they said "We just don't do that.". Can anyone explain this attitude to me? I …

Stores in Canada would be especially nice. There is a game store sort of near me (only four towns away), but I don't get out that way very often...

Not sure if this belongs here or on the HD board but here's my question anyway. Is there a list of pre-generated equipment in the Hero Designer software or if my character buys a battle axe do I have to build it from the ground up? (real weapon, 1 1/2 d6 HKA... etc)

I'm trying to come up with some guidelines for magic item pricing and I'm using the basic weapons and armor as a baseline. However, I can't seem to find a relationship between Active/Real points and the money costs. Sure, better stuff costs more. But is there a foundational relationship like the guidelines for new gear in Star Hero?

Does Andy's Time Chart on page 83 of FHero seem off to you? A year has nine months, and divides it into three utams of four months each. Three times four is twelve. What does Andy base the year upon if not the change of seasons?

TOO MANY CHOICES!!! For those of you on the edge of deciding to pick up FH, the Magic section alone is worth the VERY LOW PRICE of this product... I was blown away... Now I just need to read the section thoroughly and decide what magic system(s) I would prefer. On another note, there was a section I especially liked: The Disads has a chart for the Size Phys Lim, detailing each size. Great job Steve

I'm looking for reading suggestion for Magic Returns stories (ie: Modern times when magic and fantasy elements return). Things I have thought of. 1. Shadowrun RPG and novel (I never liked Shadowrun due to the cyberpunk parts) 2. GURPS Technomancer 3. Buffy RPG and novels 4. White Wolf WoD RPGs and novels. 5. Sean Stewart's "Resurrection Man" and "Night Watch" Can you thnk of any others? Mike

a) Let's say we have a knight in late medieval plate mail. He gets peppered by a barrage of arrows, all of which glance off without penetrating his armor (he takes no BODY). However, the total STUN from all these deflected arrows knocks him deeply unconscious. Needless to say, this is ridiculous and completely out-of-genre. Nowhere in history or genre fiction does such a thing happen, yet it's a very plausable result of such an assault in game terms. Average attacks versus average DEFs are going to produce vastly more STUN than BODY damage. Yet the fantasy genre is usually more about cleaving through an orc in one mighty blow than battering said orc unconscious with…

After realizing that I can't make three interesting/different 50+50 characters even with a random character generator doing half the work for me, I might as well see if there's an easier way to at least get people acquainted with the system so I can get an idea of how to continue or someone else to GM. Are there completely pre-built, ready to run FH (Preferably 4th edition) scenarios anywhere?

Clerical magic or divine magic is one of the tricky subjects in fantasy settings. How to handle it depends on what a deity is in a particular world. In some stories, and in computer games such as Populous, a deity's power grows the more followers they have. Presumably each worshipper donates some of their spiritual energy to their deity through worship. Normally one wouldn't bother to write up stats for this abbility, but i think that this abbility might be related to how clerical magic would work in such a world, so i wrote it up. pts worshipper --- --------- 1 10 END for deity's divine energy END reserve ranged +1/2, transdimensional +1/4, usable by ot…

Hello folks. I am new to the forums as well as the HERO gaming system. Actually I think I have one of the older editions of Fantasy Hero out in the garage on a shelf someplace, but it has been some time since I thumbed through it's pages. I keep hearing good things about the system so I am thinking about taking the plunge. I am getting very tired of the whole d20 thing, I still play it but it just seems to have something missing IMO. Ok so now for my questions. Am I safe in assuming that I will need the HERO 5th edition rules as well as Fantasy Hero in order to truely be able to enjoy and run a game?? Or can I just use the Fantasy Hero rules? Silly questions I…

I don't know about you, but I wasn't born under a rhyming planet. But it seems unfair to allow such a ripe opportunity for roleplaying to default to dice rolls, however. Any idea how this might be made more playable? I was thinking something more along the lines of "Who's line is it anyway?" No need to get epic, and frankly the tastes of most medieval fairs would have been more the bawd than the bard (at least judging by SCA revels, which may be dangerous).

I was in a friends 75+75+XP FH campaign and we had several good sessions with a collection of competitions at an annual fair. They incuded Strength feats Hanging from a quadrangle of poles over a pool of water Stone hurling Tug of War Races a long distance foot race and a short distance sprinting races. as well as a Horse race through town and over a wide variety of obstacles Professional competitions A hunting Competition tests of lore, history, and knowledge a test of healing the day after the martial competitions Since HERO is not just about laying the smackdown on Orcs and other nastys what sort of competitions would you come…

How would one go about creating a cleric in a 75+75 std. hero game? I'd like to be able to turn undead. I am not sure how that would work actually.

Gamebalance and elf-hating to the side. I mean, was not Tolkien's elf's immune to sickness, immune to ageing, immune to cold, Immune to ghosts and so on? Oh yeah, they live forever right? Question: If you would build Elves in a Tolkien kind of style what kind of powers would you give them?

I'm curious ... has the number of points for a starting FH character in a 'typical' campaign gone up, like the ones for a 'typical' superhero campaign for Champions did (from 250 to 350)? I know 'typical campaign' is something of an oxymoron, but I'm insanely curious. *itchitchitch* Must apply FH ... must scratch itch! *itchitchitch*

Hello I have been getting ready to run a 350 point fantasy game were the players all play the roles of the top thousand or so people on the planet, demi-gods, Arch Wizards and Dukes, The game uses all the standard “Super Heroic†combat and the “Heroic†rules for advancement and spoils. So far the players are excited and I am excited. Has any one else here started a 350 game as Fantasy? If so what did you do in your game, my theme is that the players are all members of the same court and they have roles to play out as the try to defend their people and advance the state. (We have a Knight Martial, a Life Wizard, and a Middle Nobility.)

I’ve been thinking about a Limitation that light fighters, thieves, etc. could take on some of their abilities, to reflect the fact they can not perform those tasks as well if wearing heavy armor. The type of abilities I’m talking about include (but are no means limited to) Two Weapon Fighting, DCV combat levels, Clinging (special effect: advanced climbing skill), etc. Of course, no character would be required to take the limitation on any of these abilities. It is only intended for those whose particular technique is hindered by restrictive armor. I originally considered using these values (version A): No Armor at all: -1 Armor of DEF 2 or less: -3/4 Arm…

Looking for rules legal ways to translate these concepts into HERO properly. In D&D, wizards can make single-use scrolls and potions (and other such disposable items) that replicate the effects of almost any spell they know. How to represent this in HERO? The only option I can see is to buy each spell you want to be able to make an item out of as a seperate Power with Trigger, OAF Expendable, etc, but buying two versions of every spell is just too expensive. Using Independent is problematic, too. A single one-use scroll with a powerful spell on it (say 90 AP) will cost 11 points even with -8 worth of Limitations on it, which is just ridiculous, even for…
