I am doing CRAZY here. I simply cannot get a Fantasy HERO game going and I'm this close to just giving up. I just can't find a satisfying way to do magic! 1. Individual spells: Too expensive. Unless I load everything down with Limitations until it's weak and buggy as hell. I don't want ANY Limitations on my magic except Gestures and Incantations. I hate mages that feel like gimps because they're loaded down with -3 (or more) worth of Limitations on every spell. Energy Blast 8d6 with a decent AoE (what I would consider a good MID-POWER spell) is still a whopping 40 points with those Limitations. Do you have any idea how long it takes a Heroic character to save up 40 p…

In 4E many packages had a few bonus points included. Usually 0 to 3 points depending on how beneficial the package was (i.e the more useful the package was the lower the bonus). This was intended as an incentive to players to use well designed packages to help more clearly define their characters. What does everyone think, is this a good option? It is one of the few things I really miss about 4E, that IMHO should have been carried over to 5E.

For my first FH game, I plan to make NCM optional - but with a few catches. First, it won't be common but it also won't be unsual for spells to be written with NCM in mind. I'm not quite sure what euphemism to use: fated, blessed, epic, something like that, but it'll come up for some Detect spells and power Limiations (Only works on "Fated" characters). The other catch will be that most, if not all racial packages will include NCM, although each race is also likely to have slightly altered NCMs (higher STR/lower INT, that sort of thing). My philosphy is that these packages will also be optional (your character can be an Orc with or w/o the package, but the package ha…

Okay! I'm starting a Modern Day Horror Game (4e rules, 75/75 Characters, AP limit of 30 and Def Limit of 10). I know that some members of the group are gonna wanna play magic users, and I need a cheap way of handling magic. Should I use a VPP, EC, or Multipower? MP sounds like it would be the easiest solution, but the PC's are gonna need more than just a few spells, they'll need spells that ward off speicifc types of monsters, force Changlings into their true form, etc... You know... Buffy/Angel kind of stuff (I myself don't know that much about the series, but that's pretty much what it's based off of - I love the genre). The previous needs would indicate a VPP…

(This had been going around and around my head, and the only way I can think of to relieve the pain is to inflict it on Herodom Assembled ) The scene: GenCon, 2003 The camera pans in to: Hero Games' booth Ricardo Montalban, holding a thick gaming tome in his hands, accosts passersby: [accent] Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Fantasy Hero! Although the use of AOO in 3E can get cheezy, there is something heroic about the game effect. Enemies do not get to pass by character without being threatened if they move too close. The whole concept of the AOO makes some movement very dangerous and can create some very sticky situations. I was wondering if anyone has considered how such a game effect would work in FH.

I thought I'd post some stuff from the Guardians of the Flame series. First up is healing draughts. These generally come in a bottle with about three uses' worth. These are Healing Hand healing draughts; draughts made by the Spider Sect and the other sect whose name I can't recall are less potent, usually starting at 3-4 dice. These should be built using the Differing Modifiers rules under the Usable By Others Advantage; the UBO Power should probably be built with Persistent and Uncontrolled, and should probably have Extra Time: One Week, along with 0 DCV Concentrate and possibly Requires Skill Roll (EGO-based) to represent a cleric's faith in his or her deity. …

Okay. So here is my first 5E magic system. See what you think. Reply, rant, rave, tell me I am good, tell me I am insane. Tell me what you think...about my magic system that is. Wizards Wizards are individuals which have studies and learnt mental formulas called spells. These formulas or spells allow the wizard to use an energy called aether. Wizards use aether to summon beings from other planes or change the material world. Wizards acquire this aether from other planes and items in the material world. In some areas of the material world the barrier between the planes varies in strength. This results in areas where the barrier is weaker allowing easier acce…

I came across this Steampunk setting in my FLGS, a fantasy RPG set in the Victorian era, using the Fuzion System. From what I have read so far, it looks to be pretty good. While I am not that interested in the Fuzion system nowadays, at least it should be fairly easy to convert to Hero System. Anyone else seen it yet? I think it just came out recently.

Hi, folks. I've been playing aroung with building the magic powers from George R. R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" in HERO terms. The first of these is the "Warg" ability, possessed by the Stark children. Telepathy 12d6 vs. the Animal Class of Minds, Only Works on a Single Animal Follower (-2), Receive Only (-½), Mandatory Effect: EGO +20 (-½), Constant Concentration, 0 DCV, Unaware of Nearby Events (-1½), Side Effect: Personality Loss (-¼), ½ END Cost (+¼), 75 Active Points, 13 Real Points PLUS Clairsentience, All Five Senses, x8 Range, Only Through the Senses of Animal Follower (-1), Blackout (-½), Constant Concentration, 0 DCV (-1), Side E…

My local gaming store owner suggested this when he saw the size of my FH folder. I think it would be worth the extra cost to have FH in hard cover, especially considering the page count. If not in hard cover, then maybe three hole punched like the old Rolemaster books used to come.

Steve L(or anyone in the know): will there be any kind of "sample" deity writeup in Fantasy Hero? If not, are there plans to include some kind of writeup(s) in one of the campaign books? It just occurred to me, after seeing the bit about deities in the Free Stuff Hero Universe pdf, I'd really like to see one of these 7500 point "greater god" suckers;) (or even a 2500 point "demigod" would be nice)

My pursuits to run a fantasy game have led me to an interesting point. I have begun to design a very detailed city. The City of Chrystis is so well detailed (or at least heading in such a way) that I can tell you the names of ever member of the assissins guild (as well as what poisons they have access to) and have write-ups for the normal, poor, and rich average folk. I can tell you the "alignment" of the Thieves' Guild and can give precise detail to the patrons of the three different taverns. I also have plans to create a random chart for who is in each of the taverns at any given point. Basically, I have a growing three-ring binder for about everything one woul…

Okay. Here is the deal. I am going to be running a FH campaign and I am working on a magic system. Problem is I have run into a brick wall concering a couple of things. I have most of the system down, but a couple of things are bugging me. --Spells are mental formulas that mages learn to use an energy called “aether.†Mages use “aether†to summon beings from other or have things occur in the material world. Mages acquire this “aether†from other planes and items in the material world. --All spells cost END. This use of “aether†is very is very strenuous and causes great strain on a mage. --In some areas of the material world the barrier between …

O.k., so I just finished watching Brotherhood of the Wolf. I'm not making any statements about the movie itself, the acting, the plot, anything. (I'm not saying I didn't like it. It's just not the point of this post and I want to make that clear.) In the final fight sequence the two characters use extremely exotic weapons. The main good guy uses paired short swords with complex guard that allows him to easily spin the sword as he is striking. The main bad guy uses a broad sword which can extend on a chain that traverses the interior length of the blade. I was wondering does anyone know if: A) These were based off of factual weaponry. ( I have a feeling that t…

I'm wondering if it is possible to create a power that gives you extra phases with an activation roll? I'm thinking of a potion, sword, item that will grant an extra attack on a roll of 11 or less or some such. What do you all think? Any ideas? Is it possible in the rules framework?

Okay here is the problem. I am working on my Fantasy Hero campaign and instead of saying, "Well it looks like this." I want to be able to show my players. Problem is, I am talentless as far as art goes. I do good on stick figures, but little else. So, what websites or rpg books do you get your art from?

Having nothing intelegent to say about the new FH book yet, I do want to ask Steve a question: How fast do you go through Keyboards? 709 pages, wow... After I have read some I will comment on the Playtest boards... What is the ESTIMATED cost of this book going to be?

Is anyone here famaliar with the spell casting used in SS d20? I'd like to try and run a FH game using that type of casting I don't own any FH books yet but I plan on getting the new one as soon as it comes out. For those not famaliar with it the casting consists of a roll of 1d20 + modifiers, you must equal or exceed the spell's target number you are trying to cast. For example trying to cast a fire spell ,the casting total for the spell is 35 you have to get a total of 35 or higher for the spell to take effect. If you don't you keep rolling and the totals are cumulative until you hit 35. For every round you keep casting you must make a fortitude save or suffer…

when will the FH magic book be out? currently that is my only hang up on not switching to FH, the rest I can do on my own, but I disliked the spell colleges in the last edition, but I want to present a list of spells to the players to choose from (that they can modify later) and I would prefer someone else do the work EDIT: read release schedule first...

Not yet having waded into the deep subject of Powers, is there any real difference--rulewise--between superpowers and spells? In other words, could the USPD be used as a FH spell resource? As-is or with some tweaking?
