How big of a limit would that be?? -1?? "Movement/Reflex-Based Defense": Any physical or energy defense based on evading attacks rather than enduring them. Combat Luck is the obvious example ( except in cases where it literally represents extraordinary luck, like Hazard ). The Unfolding Lotus Blossum Yeng-Tao technique would be another example.

The Concept: A four-shot .45 caliber pistol that can be dismantled into a number of discreet components that the owner can carry on his person with out arrousing suspicion and takes about a second to reassemble. Basically, something similar to the Golden Gun from the James Bond movie. Here's what I've got on this thus far: RKA 2d6-1, +1 STUN Multiplier (+1/4), (31 Active Points), IAF (-1/2), Beam (-1/4), Extra Time (Full Phase to assemble; -1/4), 4 Charges (-1) cost: 10 points I'm planning to give the gun a Concealment roll on 15- (15 Active Points) with IAF and the Limitations: "Only To Hide The Gun" and "Only While The Gun Is Dismantled." The part I'm stu…

Was at Dundracon this weekend, flipped through the spiffy new vehicle sourcebook, and have only one minor quibble: Steve, the Iowa class Battleship is listed with only 10 DEF! I'm sure you just forgot the extra line listing 10 or 20 extra DEF with a "limited coverage" limitation, but could you tell us what the value is supposed to be? the current listing would be sunk by 2 hits with it's own guns, or even 3 hits by an Abrams! A 40 STr brick could haymaker it into oblivion in a few minutes;) Anyway, I'm sure it's easy to miss stuff when you have 50 lines of stuff per writeup:)

Lets say you want to build a single power that can inflict either Normal or Killing damage DCs, selected on usage. How big of an advantage would this be, +1/4 or +1/2?? Likewise, for a power with Variable Advantage on it, how much VA would need to be spent to convert the damage between normal and killing??

how do those of you who have purchased Sidekick plan to use it in your games? For gamemasters whoi already have Fred, how does "FREED Lite" fit into your schemes?

Do you need to roll to-hit to dispel on incoming attack/effect? In my fantasy campaign I allow mages to abort to dispel, just like a dodge or dive for cover. This encourages really interesting mage battles. Any way I have always required a to-hit roll to target the mage or the hex of the spell effect in case of persistent powers. Is this the correct way to do this? Would you or do you do something else in your game? As a side not for propose of figuring DCV for a dispel attacks I do not count normal shields. That do you think?

Given that a cone is 3D, would making it into a fan (ie, only having 2 dimensions) be worthy of any discount (let's say an extra -1/4 limitation)? G

I would like to use the optional velocity damage rules for knockback damage. I've gotten as far as the inches of kb times 12 for the inches per turn (as with throws), and damage equals VF times 2 if the target hits something (as with falls) or just VF if the subject does not. Is this correct, or is there something I'm missing?

Avoiding Flash 1 2

Hi Everyone, I have a question regarding Flash and the statement that at the GM's discretion a character can cover their eyes or ears to avoid a flash against that specific sense (in FRED under the description for the power Flash). My questions are: 1. Under what circumstances would this happen? 2. If this were allowed (assume a flash vs sight group and the character covers his eyes), how is the action adjudicated? Does the character have to abort to cover his eyes? Is the protection absolute (ie. Stop all the Flash) or only partial (gives 2 points of Flash DEF for example). I know this may be effect specific but I am looking for a general rule to base…

Hello all, I want to create a spell that creates a sword (HKA) out of thin air. Now it is a spell so to create the sword requires the a magic skill roll, and the expenditure of mana (END Reserve). Now that the sword is made I want it to be there all day. At no cost in mana and I don’t want to have to make a magic skill roll every time I use the sword. But I want the sword to act like a normal sword (only for the creator), that means the only end it cost is for the STR that is used. Do you see what I am getting at? Maybe….. 1D6+1 HKA +1/2 END = 0 -1/2 Requires Magic Skill Roll to Create Sword -1/2 Side Effects on failed Magic Skill Roll …

If I were to give a character the power Invisibility with the advantage Invisible Power Effects, what would happen? The way I see it, all the game mechanical effects of Invisibility would still apply (other characters can't see the character from a distance at all, and need a PER roll up close), but for anyone who DID manage to see the character, there would be no indication that he was invisible. Sort of a, "GAHH! Where'd YOU come from?" effect. Perfect for ninja or other characters who are "very, very sneaky." Just wondering. Zeropoint

BESM Hero

My RP group has decided to reform after a hiatus, but we are in debate over what system to use. I prefer Hero, but it gives everyone else a headache. They prefer d20, but once you've tasted Hero, you never want to go back, so I might not have that much fun. Which brings me to BESM. It's a d20 product by...that company whose name I can't remember (they also produced that sentinals superhero book for d20). It's a quirky little setting-less system with a strict, yet loose, genre. physics are tossed aside for effect in many cases, and the point buy system they've pioneered for d20 made me very happy; it was a lot like a compromise between d20 and Hero. On the other …

First Hero game 1 2 3

This post is slightly premature because I don't have the time to post in as great of detail as I'd like. I ran my first HERO game last Sunday. It went ok (I was more focused on the system than the story but my players didn't seem to notice). I do have a number of things I need to work on and clarify and I'll be doing that between now and the next game. One thing I really wanted to ask concerns combat initiation. In d20 or various other systems, I'm used to telling everyone to "roll initiative" which lets me know exactly when people are going. I like the HERO turn/segment/phase system but I had a real hard time getting combat flowing. I really wasn't sure, f…

Tonight while playing an entirely different game I hit upon an idea and I'm wondering if you all have a suggestion on how to perform this power. I haven't given it too much tought yet. The idea would be a power that allows you to swap physical locations with another target. I thought about teleport, usable on yourself plus a linked t-port usable against a target. Am I missing anything mechanics-wise? Is there a better way to do this sort of manuver?

I'd like to build a harpoon gun for the AQUANAUT, the armored sentinel of the sea. The first half of the power will be a fairly straight-foward ranged killing attack, but I'm not sure what mechanics to use to simulate reeling his quarry in. The victim will be attached to a rope, and the Aquanaut will be yanking him in using brute strength, so I see elements of an entangle and telekinesis at play. Any suggestions?

I'm trying to build an assault rifle with an under-barrel grenade launcher. The obvious way is with fixed-slot multipowers, which would be fine if I wanted the launcher only able to fire one type of grenade - something like this: 30 Multipower, 90-point reserve, (90 Active Points); all slots OAF (-1), STR Minimum 14 (STR Min. Cannot Add/Subtract Damage; -1) 3u Rifle: (Total: 90 Active Cost, 26 Real Cost) Killing Attack - Ranged 3d6-1, +1 Increased STUN Multiplier (+1/4), Autofire (5 shots; +1/2), 60 Charges (+1/2) (90 Active Points); OAF (-1), STR Minimum 14 (STR Min. Cannot Add/Subtract Damage; -1), Beam (-1/4), Real Weapon (-1/4) (Real Cost: 26) …

You could certainly build magic resistance with limited Defense, Force Field, etc. However, what if you wanted a character who, when subject to hostile magic ( or maybe any magic ), reflexively Dispelled it on contact?? How would you build this??

Has anyone tried this and if so, how did you do it? Idea was for a character that uses a special suit and mask to appear like aghost by making his body selectively invisible, mostly the head, allowing him to freak people out with the "Headless Horseman" routine.

Last night during a "danger room" session, one of the PCs was hanging on to a moving 2.5 ton truck. It had accelerated to 35 mph when the driver managed to clip the side of a building with the unfortunate character who was hanging on. Can somebody help me through the calculations for how many DCs that would be? Or point me to a resource on the web? We're assuming the building was made out of normal brick and mortar. Thanks

profession skill, short question: Is it allowed to go with PS : Thief. I thought about it and until now haven't seen anything that would say something against this idea (maybe I have overread something ? ) I'm a little bit puzzled because this would mean I could buy PS : Thief for my thief character, he would know all about lockpicking, trading stolen goods and so one but wouldn't this be a rule violation. I'm new to HERO and i trying to do my first character at the moment.

I'm noticing FReD dosn't have a CGRS, and was wondering if this was intentionally left out, I found that it helps newbe GM's and gives a good hand out for ppl to make characters. IE I've got a new GM that wants to do a PBeM Hero game, and well, he's not listening to much of my advice, so I figured something like this would help him to help us... so if anyone knows where one is... or I could just use the 4th ed as a model, and go from there.
