I dabble in "Halo" now and again, and I wanted to build one of my favorite weapons, the plasma grenade. Here are the characteristics: Like standard grenades, Plasmas have an explosion effect, have a range based on STR, and go off a few seconds after being thrown. Unlike standard grenades, plasmas are 'sticky'. If you manage to hit a character, it clings to them, and does much more damage as it explodes. The strategy is to hit an enemy, and hope the enemy panics and runs toward the safety of his own, helping you blow them up.

I wanted to build Invisibility to memory, with delay about 5 minutes. So you meet the character, interact, then about 5 minutes later you have no recollection of his presence or interaction. Mind Control, way to expensive and impossible effect to achieve. Transform, same as above Psionic surgury, same as above Invisibility is the best way, right?

The sections on Combat and Non-combat movement, more precisly, how far you can move in a single action and how fast you are going, have me a bit confused. So, my character has a movement rate of 10" and a x8 Non-combat movement. (30 points total) Ok. From a standstill can the character do this? 1) Do a 80" move as a full-phase action, moving at Non-combat movement speeds (1/2 dcv, 0 ocv) 2) Do a 40" move as a half-phase action, moving at Non-combat movement speeds (1/2 dcv, 0 ocv) 3) Do a 10" move as a half-phase action, moving at Non-combat movement speeds (1/2 dcv, 0 ocv) How do these change if the character has Rapid Noncombat Movement, C…

Hey Folks, I have to say I'm real excited to hear about Sidekick. I bought FRED when it first appeared, but just found it too overwhelming compared to the old days when I played Champs 2E, Espionage and Justice, Inc. So FRED has been gathering dust, unfortunately. I lurk here just to see what HERO fans are talking about, but have not run a HERO game in about 20 years. So I'm really glad to see this product coming out, but I have a couple of questions 1) Is this going to be a complete game? i.e. is this just a "bridge" product to FRED or is this going to be like the old D&D Basic/Expert/C ompanion etc where it's a complete, yet simplified game? 2)…

Allright the everywhere I look Edietic memory is only "worth" five points. I know why, that isn 't the point the point (Or should I say points?) Is What would you do to make the Edietic Memory worth 10 points? there are rules to this game however. the rules are: the ability must be minor, not worth much more than five (but as close as possible to five points ) and it must be something that can 1. cover a wide range of SFX's 2. not be easily duplicated by exisiting effects 3. fit in with the memory concept 4. not be an easy gamebreaker My Idea is : Edietic Memory allows a character who has purchased it to use 5 point or great…

I am going to purchase the 5th edition rule book. I understand that it only comes bound hard cover. My first champion's book was hard cover, you know the big blue 4th edition one. The pages fell out of the binding. Will this happen to my 5th edition book or is it a better binding job? I would like to know if i have to baby my 5th edition book when I get it.

Hero is an unlimited system, in that you can devise characters using any power at any level, limited only by the points you are given. Suggestions for limitations are given for lower level games, but the GM is free to ignore them. Having run a campaign for 9 months I've come to see the wisdom in that. The problem you have to face is that if one character has a really powerful attack, for example, such as 4d6 Killing then in order to make the combat sensible the GM has to send reasonably tough creatures against the party with high enough DEF/BODY etc. The problem comes when the rest of the party isn't so inclined with the ability to cause as much damage. You end u…

I am building a summon. I am going to summon a 100 point creature which whill cost me 20 active points. The creature in question is built on a total of 100 points. My question is why not have all these points be Base points? Why would I want to place any disadvantages on the summoned creature? I don't get any more points?

Hello all, I need some thoughts on how to model an ability in hero. How would you all think of how to do a hive mind? By this I mean a character or automaton with low intelligence but when near or in communication with others of its kind is more intelligent and more intelligent the larger the group. It also is always in telepathic communication with the others. I am thinking about this idea fro a machine warrior squad I am coming up with.

How would you construct a character that is actually two characters, who have the ability to switch between/turn into each other?? Multiform is the obvious choice, *HOWEVER*, I'm thinking of a case where both forms are fully superheroic on more or less equal levels, as well as mentally indepedent.

Is there, or has there ever been a rule in the HERO System about causing yourself damage when you Strike something and do not excede that somethings DEF at all? The example is a normal punching a brick wall as hard as he can; he does not do enough BODY to harm the brick wall at all, and in the process, he shatters his hand. (ouch!) This has come up in my game a few times, and most of the older players (people who learned the game elsewhere and only started playing in my game in college) recall the rule, but when a newer guy asked me to show it, I can't find it in 5th ed. OR 4th ed. rules. Is this just a common house rule? By the way: My use of it is: I…

how much would the psycological Limitation "not the brightest of the bunch" be worth? the only person who comes to mind is the young Goku in the show Dragonball (perticularly the begining of the series) I can't really think how to adequatly describe it to those who haven't seen the show, Goku is completely ignorant about gender distinctions, he doesn't get most things about technology, and just doesn't really understand things right away, Unless they are fighting related

Vehicle stats issues

IÕm rather new to Hero, so it may just be me, but I may have found a few issues with some vehicle characteristics in the base book. Please excuse me for intruding if these things have an errata already, but when I looked, I didnÕt find one. Also, I could just be misunderstanding something, so please cut me some slack. First, the chart lists a Harley Davidson Motorcycle as having a STRength of 15. This might be suitable for setting carrying capacity, or it might be relevant for how much the vehicle can tow with its tires, I donÕt know... But I know what itÕs not good for. It only takes 4 horsepower to lift 300 kilograms at 1 meter/second (given the proper gea…

I'm trying to build a power/ability for my character, and looking for a little helpful inspiration. He's a gateway teleporter. At the begining of every fight he opens up a few portals that protect him (i.e. forcefield). At the same time I'd also like to be able to open a few portals that float around the character that he can look through. In otherwords, portals that allow him to look forward and see what's going on behind him. Kinda like rearview mirrors. Basically I'm trying to find a way to build 360 degree sight, but unfortunatly this is an area of hero design I'm not all that up on, and I'm having trouble getting started. Any ideas/suggestions?

For the first time since purchasing FReD over a year ago, I'm trying to design a power and I'm stumped on exactly how to do it. The idea is that the character who possesses this power can't be remembered. People who meet him forget about him the instant he's out of sight, and when he comes back he has to re-explain who he is. The power would be useful for a spy-type character who could interact freely with the enemy, knowing that they won't remember him, but at the same time would be a drawback, because the people he loves won't remember who he is. Any wisdom to offer?

I have been musing on the notion of a singular framework with slots representing all the notions of the existing frameworks and solving a few issues along the way such as smaller point values than the reserve in ECs as well as creating a mid-point between an EC and a VPP, something more flexible than a EC but slightly less flexible than a VPP (i.e., a VPP with the same limitations as an EC). The basic design consideration, aside from unifying frameworks, was to NOT change, as much as possible, the points balance that the current frameworks maintain. This appears largely achieved, though not precisely. Regarding ECs, the cost is within a few points. Regarding MPs, …

Hey there. Have quite a few questions about the Focus and Independent limitations. I only have the 4th addition rule book, so maybe 5th addition is clearly, but to me the rules are very vague. 1. Can a villain kill a hero (or possibly another villain) and permanently take a universal focus? 2. What about someone whose character gimmick is a thief, could you play a focus thief, against other players or NPC. If so how long could they keep them. Could that character turn around and sell them to another player, until the original owner was able to retrieve it. Or, is this only the case if the power has Independent hook to it. 3. What about guns and the …

Anybody remember the suppliment "Mind Games"? Every since the majority of my Champions books walked off (didn't even leave a note!) this is one of the books I've been without. Anybody know where I can find a copy?

How would you fix it? One thing I am toying with is this: Multiply by the stun multiplier ONLY what gets through the rDEF, this will make it very dangerous for Mundanes (no rDEF) but against heroes or people in body armor not so bad

Got a question for the forum that was inspired by a guy who was showing me a shapechanging PC. When I play with my cats it’s not uncommon for them to ‘grab’ my hand with their front claws and then go to town biting and raking with their rear claws. In champs terms this is superficially easy enough. Grab then a maneuver that is ‘must follow’ grab. However in real life I’m easily strong enough to ‘break’ the grab but I almost never do … because if I did then those front claws would tear a ton of skin on the way out. That got me thinking. When I studied Hapkido I did a lot of similar maneuvers. I studied how to put an opponent in a joint …

This subject has likely come up before, but I bring it to you all anyway. How do you handle killing characters in a superhero setting? Do you make it an OOC priority not to, because making a character and fitting it into the campaign is difficult and/or time-consuming? Do you allow it only if the characters do something REALLY stupid? Do your campaign's characters start to feel invincible because they know they can't die, and thus start to maybe grow bored or take unrealistic chances? I'd appreciate any and all viewpoints you might care to offer.
