What character design or campaign concept proved to be the most difficult for you to simulate with Hero?

How do people handle the Roll with Blow manuever in games without knockback? To summarize the manuever, it allows a character to abort to taking 1/2 damage, but the character takes an extra die of knockback...

I don't recall any rules that necessarily account for this, though it could EASILY be something I missed in FH or FREd. I guess here's what I'm thinking. If you simply give a shield the "Costs END" limitation then it's going to cost you END either when you activate it (when you put it on?) or once per phase, regardless of the number of attacks you fend off. What I have is actually a champions character. I've written the SFX of their armor so that it physically only covers about 1/4 of their body (Arms, shoulders, knees, etc.), but due to their skill with it they are more able to put those pieces in the way. I've simply given it a Requires Skill Roll limitati…

Lets say I were to build a character who has a whole bunch of martial arts weapons. Would it be better to build this aspect as an elemental control ( with each weapon a slot ), or a multipower??

I'm having a bit of trouble with an effect I'm trying to model, so I'm appealing to Herodom assembled for help. What I'm trying to do is create a paralyzing drug; I'm trying to do this with Entangle, and I'd like to say vs. CON instead of STR for the breakout, but there doesn't seem to be an option like that. The closest I've been able to come so far is BOECV, Normal Range Applies (+3/4), Entangle Takes No Damage From Physical Attacks (+1/4), Works vs. EGO not STR (+1/4), Susceptible to Alcohol (washes off the chemical) (-1) Cannot Form Barriers (-1/4). There are several problems with this; first, it's vs. EGO, not CON. Second, ideally, having LS: Vacu…

Question for herodom... I am trying to simulate some of the drugs in M&M's Freedom City Sourcebook. They can boost characteristics temporarily, but there can be harmful side effects. That's easy to simulate. Aids plus side effects with activation rolls. However, I want the drugs to be less effective for super people. I was wondering if anyone had already developed a way to do this. I was considering the following: 1. CON roll to see if the drug takes effect. If the character FAILS the roll, the drug's effect occurs. High-CON characters would not receive the benefits of the drug as often as plebes. 2. A second CON roll to see if the drug's side effe…

I suspect this has been hashed over long ago, but in a bit of looking about I have not seen it covered. Do the champions (Super) Hero, Fantasy and Star hero systems all work interchangeably? In other words if I were to use the Fantasy Grimore and Star Hero tool kit could I port things directly into Champions without issue with needing to re-figure disadvantage costs, powers costs, etc?

Alright I got this player who wants his character to make a cloning virus. It goes around like any virus, and causes those it inflicts split into to two identical beings. (Those Beings are immune afterward.) My thoughts are Duplication, Sticky, Usable on others, and Only Uninfected -1/4 ? Doesn't seem right...

This is more a question for Steve and the gang but if anyone has actually done this, please let me know. There are so many unique acronyms in HERO that sometimes us newbies get lost in all the letters. I was thinking, it would be cool to have a printable version (detailed with c.f. page numbers) of the Fifth Edition glossary/lexicon. If nothing like this exists yet, would it be legal for one of us to do it? Just something to think about, guys.

Okay, time for a stupid newbie question. Can someone explain the following to me: 1. What is the difference between Armor and Damage Resistance? 2. Under what circumstances would you want one instead of the other? I know the answer is probably right in front of me, but I'm just not making the connections.

I was creating a Midnighter-style character(1) trying to figure out the effects of somebody who had a combat computer in their head that gave them... More overall Combat Levels More Targeting Levels Find Weakness w/ all his attacks A truly obnoxious Analyze Style, Analyze Combat Technique, and related KS'es But only so long as nothing was screwing up the computer implant. I thought about buying them all with "Restrainable", as in the Cyber Hero definition, and then I decided that in a superhero genre game it was too rare. Would it be too crunchy to buy the Computer as a Follower, implant it, buy the "Permanent Bond" level of Mind Link on the c…

Aight, maybe in 5th edition its changed or clearly defined, but as it stands I still use 4th ed. I have a question about animal and monster attacks. Certain entities have multiple attacks, like a bear having a bite and a x2 claw dealie. They still only get ONE attack per phase, correct? Not three or some other standard rule-breaking thing? I was totally sure of this answer until this little seed of doubt crept into my mind, so now I need clarification. Thanks, -=Grim=-

Along the same lines as the "Accidental Change" thread (qv), what ideas do people have for expanding the Age Disadvantage? To start with, I'd change the header to "Age/Normal Characteristic Maxima." The optional rules I can think of include: A return of some version of the old way of creating different NCM for different species (though of course very much as an option). A listing for Age 80+, for the truly ancient. Cross-references to Physical Limitations related to age. Ways to differentiate characters with Normal Characteristic Maxima from those without in games that don't impose it as default -- for example, for example, characters with NCM might use Hero…

Sometime this year I'm going to run my first HERO campaign, which will involve indroducing a bunch of complete HERO novices to the system, so I'm really excited and looking forward to Sidekick coming out, it should be a great help with getting a whole new group into HERO, not to mention helping me grasp the intricacies of the powers system, which I'm still a little sketchy on. Just had to share that - Sidekick should be in stores in two or three weeks now and it's been a while since I've looked forward to getting a new gaming book this much!

My wife has a good idea for a character concept, but she's having a hard time getting into the ehad of this character. I wonder if there is a resource I can lok at with lists of questions or something like that which will help me help her understand this character she's created better?

Curious how others have handled the power of teleportation when considering allowing it as an "abort" action when attacked. We have never allowed it in any of our campaigns because of the potential for abuse. However, you see this type of thing in the comics all the time. The Fifth Edition says that generally, movement actions such as flying or running away are not allowed as an "abort" option, with the exceptions being Diving for Cover, decelerating or turning. However, "At the GM's option, characters may be allowed to Abort to other forms of movement in appropriate circumstances." But what do you do to accomodate a PC who wants to play a character with "Night…

Could someone point me to a good explanation on Active Points (or explaing it to me themselves)? What I'm referring to is the Active Point cost for Powers. I'm not able to figure out how we know how many points we have to spend, how we figure that, or how they recover, etc. I have looked through the book but if someone knows the exact page number or a good thread that could explain this, I'd be very grateful. So far, I'm loving the system...just this one point has me confused. Thanks!!!

I'm not sure if this the right part of the boards for this topic, but here goes anyway... In looking over the various Perks in the Hero System, I suddenly remembered an old Reader's Digest story that I'd come across some years ago. It was about a woman who had undergone surgery to have a nuclear battery-powered pacemaker hooked up to her heart. Because she did a lot of cross-border travel between the U.S. and Canada (job-related, I think), she had to get a special permit to transport nuclear material across international bord- ers. So, what I'm asking you fellow Herophiles is this: what do you guys think that a Perk like that would be worth in …

I'm a bit confused as to how to apply multiple distinctive features, as the entry is rather vague on whetehr or not characters can have them. To make the example easier, I'll look at Wolverine (the Ultimate Universe version): Mutant: Concealable, extreme reaction, only detected by unusual senses (gene scan, tissue sample examination) Claws: Easily concealed, major reaction, detected by commonly-used senses. Metal Skeleton: Not concealable, always noticed, only detectable by unusual senses (metal detector, x-ray). X-Men Uniform: Easily concealed, major reaction, detectable by commonly-used senses. From what I understand, Mutant and Metal Skele…

Why would I want to pay 15 pts for a 1d6 PRE Drain at Range instead of buying 3d6 of PRE Attack? It seems that the 3 point reduction the Drain would get pales in comparison to the 9 pt value of the straight attack?

I'm thinking about a Dr. Pym type character, who uses a number of different identities with different power sets. He himself stays the same, but his powers change based on the equipment and costume he uses. Is Multiform the proper way to construct this? Can you think of another way?

How would you do the following? I want to make a hospital run by my worlds take on the Knights Hospitaler. I want to have an invisible field around it, a ward of divine energy, that keeps diseases from spreading from the hospital to the rest of the city. The power would require a renewal every dawn, and it would be invisible to sight. But you WOULD get a strange tingling sensation once you passed through it. I want to say a force field, but how would I make it only keep diseases and viruses at bay? Is it as simple as a limitation: only keeps diseases at bay? If its that simople then I KNOW Im overcomplicating my powers... Thanks. -=Grim=-

OCV & DCV extras for 4 Armed Sword Demons?!?! Trying to make a power to represent naturally skilled 4 armed sword demons. Fighting with a sword in each of there 4 hands should be just intimidating as hell! And that’s what I am looking for, but I don’t want to over do it. So I am thinking of starting off with Weapons Familiarity Blades and then…. 1) OCV +3 Blades -3/4 Every blade wielded after the first grants an additional +1 OCV 6 Points Active 3 Points real cost *So with 2 blades it’s a +1 OCV, with 3 it’s a +2 OCV, and with 4 it’s a +3 OCV. *I can up with the -3/4 Disadvantage based on the -1/2 Disadvantage of requiring a s…

The Interaction Skills list seems to be lacking an Intimidation skill. Looking over the description for Persuasion, it seems to be more based upon guile and clever deceptions/misdirections, than on the less subtle means. Bribery too seems less related to extortion, than to 'buying' contrition or complicity... more carrot, rather than less stick. The closest existing analog seems to be Interrogation, insofar as it covers using threats (both explicit and implied), "browbeating", and other unsubtle psychological techniques, to elicit a response or behavior. You don't tend to see Interrogation on many interaction-heavy characters, although that may just be Hero System's …
