The Hero System is a toolbox, and there are some guidelines of how to change basically anything in system, like splitting Characteristics into sub-Characteristics, changing the cost of powers and even removing or adding parts of the system. If you change around too much in the system it cease to have the HERO feeling, so I need some help here. What is your idea of what the essence of the system is? In a previous thread I was told that rolling 3d6 instead of d20 was part of it, due to statistics, but what more parts are "sacred"? Please help me out here...

I was thinking about a flamethrower type attack where you can walk the attack into the target, making it much easier to hit over time. My initial idea (which I still like for some things) is Tracer +1/4 no range modifier on follow-up attacks. This would give no range modifier for attacks after the first on the same target. If you do not attack the target on a phase it starts over. No range modifier is +1/2 so this seemed reasonable. But then I was looking at continuous since being able to hold the flame on the target once you'd hit made sense. And it struck me - spreading. a 6d6 continuous attack could be used first as 1d6 +5 for spreading. Then when y…

I got a really nasty idea for a villain, but I'm not sure how to write up a certain ability he has. Basically he has knuckle claws, like Wolverine, but he can launch them at people. They are attached to a retractable cable that automatically brings them back to his hand. One of the things I see him doing is launching them out to "grab" things by impailing them. This could allow him to drag the object (or victim) back to him, or allow him to pull himself toward it (if it's more massive that he is, like a vehicle or building). How could I simulate this?

How would one model the Massive Damage power from SILVER AGE SENTINELS in HERO? I have a player who wants to be able to do much more damage with thrown knives than a base throwing knife would do. Skill levels so as to better hit certain hit locations does not work, neither does energy blast defined a "throwing knives". We are looking for a good way to tack-on extra damage to a mundane weapon. Thanks for any help.

I checked the FAQ and couldn't find anything on this specific case. This is a two-part question. 1) can Images be used "on self"? An example would be to make armor look like normal clothes. Buy the images down to zero END and make it persistant and you have a suite of armor that always looks like regular clothes (just don't look at it too hard, listen closely or try to touch it). The reason I ask this question is that I understand Images is normally supposed to affect a fixed area whose area does not move (even if the image within the area does). In the case of the above-mentioned armor, though, it will continue to be on the same area, but that area itself (the …

I have written up rules for using PRE attacks outside of the normal combat use for perusasion and convincing. The goal is to simply expand upon the existing rules, although I have made a few changes. Interaction skills are based on INT instead of PRE, as using a PRE roll to increase PRE seems like a bad idea. I also changed it so instead of a successful skill roll adding 1d6 to the PRE attack, it functions as a complementary skill for the total of the presence attack - giving the skill effect more granularity. But the basic idea is using the mind control chart for the effects of out of combat PRE attacks to persuade. The GM is of course expected to limit the …

The rules do not say to penalize for a failed complementary skill roll, but it seems odd that it can provide a bonus but not a penalty. The general question is I guess - do you consider skills to be "safe". Meaning if they succeed you get accurate information, if they fail you get no information. Or do you allow skills to fail and provide incorrect information? I know stealth, climbing and other skills can fail.

Hi there. I just wanted to thank everyone for their input and ideas on my recent flood of questions. I meant to write this earlier, but I’m a professional procrastinator and kept putting this off. Thanks again MistWing SilverTail

It takes me a while, okay? I wasn't sure about 5th Edition when it came out. Good points, bad points. There's no way that a HERO edition will ever really get me 100% in agreement anyway, just as no game system would. And there are some respects where I can be a curmudgeon, having played for 20 years. But I find myself enjoying leafing through it, and I do like the thoughtfulness that went into it. Great ideas, inspirational points. Yes, this is a great edition of HERO - in a line of great editions, to be sure, but it stands on its own. If I recall, I did a fair amount of pros and cons, but probably some heavy cons, way back. And I was among those gett…

I have a character question that im not sure which forum to post in but i thought this would be the better place. I am running a fantasy hero game where i introduced a gilf ( half giant half elf) anyway to be short and to give you some initial background, one of the players was gone from play the last time we played but everyone that played had a great time with this character. The player that was out we'll call "j" would have probably killed the gilf ( which everyone initially wanted to do ) one of the abilities his pc has is any open wound someone has his pc she can draw it all out ( to keep this character alive longer and to give "j" a better feel for the gilf) i want…

My player wants to create a speedster charactar. He wants to link Desolidification to Running (only non combat movement) to simulate the fact that is impossible to hit at this velocity. What kind of limitations would need Desolidification to create such power? The points are two: a) linked to movement (but only non combat velocity), and desolidification that works only for damage, not to walk through walls and object. Thanks.

John515 said: I conside this to be normal super villain tactics, if you allow them to have recoveries at all. One possible problems is that 0 Stun = 0 End, so unless the attack cost 1 End or less, said SV just went unconcious again. And just let players know that the same applies to them, they are not limited after being unconsious, so the playing field is equal. In actuality, it is better for the players in my campaigns. This is because in many battles, the bad guys don't get recoveries once they are unconcious. The reason for that is to prevent the 'heroes' from taking another shot or two at the villains to make sure that they stay down. If they get back up …

Would you allow a Block/Strike or a Block/Leg Sweep? Would you allow a Block/Strike or a Block/Leg Sweep? As a GM would you / do you allow these built martial maneuvers from the Ultimate martial artiest in your game? I have created several martial arts forms for my World and I am introducing both of these maneuvers soon. I just wanted some input from other GM’s out there. They are potentially very powerful maneuvers. Buy since a character can not abort to them I do not think that they are over powered. What do you think? As always, Thanks

(If the HERO Games management feels that this topic violates the playtesting process, I won't object to having it removed.) I was curious as to how the HERO System Sidekick was going down with HERO novices, so I thought I'd address the question to people involved in the playtesting process or just using Sidekick with their gaming group. I'm not asking for details of the manuscript or what parts are or are not working - that would be unfair at this stage of the process. I would just like to know how your players are responding to it in general: Is it making the teaching process easier? Are they more enthusiastic (or at least less intimidated) about learning the ru…

Just wanted to let the DIGITAL HERO subscribers know that the ALIEN WARS manuscript is now available for playtesting/testreading. You can find it in the usual place. If you have any questions/comments, please post them in the "Company Questions" thread of the same title.

Hey all, I'm relatively new to HERO. I've read through the system, and owned Champions since the 80's, but I have never played a game. I'm looking for a little bit of advice for my first game. I'm going to be using Sidekick to plan a campaign loosely based on the Underworld Movie - but the character's aren't Vampires & Werewolves. They are part of a well-funded private organization that's mission is to dispatch Vampires & Werewolves. Anyway, I own the HERO System Bestiary, and the Vampires and Were- wolves in that book seem like they would work with minor modification. One question I had was in regards to the "free-fall" Vampire/Werewolf …

Ya know... Parts of this game system remind me of parts of the Alternity game system. Nothing specific, just in general. Kind of like the way palladium reminds me of D&D. By the way, yes, I know the Champions came out before Alternity. That doesn't stop them from being vaguly similar... I don't know wether to be nostalgic or slightly unsettled... I have written up details for tracking and navigation. These are intended mostly for flavor (the GM and player can describe what they are actually doing or seeing when they make the attempt) but also has mechanics for some modifiers. comments welcome, especially errors or typos.

Hullo! After buying the 5th ed. toolkit, I have a question: What would be the point value of being effectivly quadriplegic? I have a character that is basically a brain-in-a-box . He (it?) will have a cyberjack (3 points) that allows him to connect to an armored robotic power suit. He will have zero mobility while outsite the suit, and only have a speaker, mic, and camera turret to interact with the world. What say you? I came up with basically a 50 point disadvantage. I'm not sure if i'm shortchanging it though... The Fool. "Don't 'be patient' me! I'm a @*#*$ paperweight!"

I have a player who insists that his mentalist MUST have the following: Detect Minds (Mental Group), 0 Phase Sense, Ranged, Discriminatory, Analyze, 360 Degree Sense, Targetting The PC has Mind Scan, and I told him to use that, rather than this, since he seems to be mimicking Mind Scan, except that 'Detect Minds' uses no END and doesn't waste a phase. It requires PER and is reduced by Range, but also means he can't be attacked back through it. Should I allow it? Should I make him choose either the Mind Scan -or- the Detect, but not both?

This is a house rule we've taken to using. It's still a work in progress though. It's a limitation variation for desolidification called Amorphic. Basicly it works like this. Amorphic (-1.5) This type of desolidificaton can still be affected by the real world, and can still affect the real world. (I.E. It provides no defense). It only allows the character to squeeze though small spaces. For example, like the Blob, or an ameoba, or having a body made of stretchy plastic. It has a lower limit on how small the space can be, we've temporarily decided on hole at least 1 inch in diameter, or a long crack at least 1/4 of an inch in width. Beca…

I just gave up on fiddling with that unnecessarily complicated Healing-based build for Regeneration in FREd (heck, the build seems to bend some rules anyway) and decided that IMG, Regeneration is back to being its own Power. 10 points gets you 1 BODY/Turn, and you can increase the increment by one step down on the chart as a -1/4 Limitation. By default it's Persistent and costs no END. Resurrection is a +20 Adder, and like the Healing version you must specify a way to stop it. I haven't decided whether Can Heal Limbs should be part of the deal by default or not. Is there anything I should know about the old Regeneration that's worth considering in the recreation …

My character Lazarus wants a special power for his mask. (Which would be an OIF) If someone who has killed someone (or has let someone die he could have saved) gazes into his reflection in the mask (at most 1-2 inch "reach" to clearly see the reflection) he won't just see a reflection of him but the ghosts of his "victims" attacking him in the reflection. Onl y HE sees the ghosts of his victims noone else. I thougt the dead to be just a special effect (and as nobody else sees them but the target itself I see no need to simulate this with mental powers) and thougth of the whole thing to be a NND (defend by not having killed or let die somebody or being at ease with tho…

I saw the add for playtesters and I'm intrigued. Is this a basic edition of the HERO system? Is it going to try and maintain the flexibility and feel of the advanced system? I've always loved HERO and would love a simpler faster system to inflict on my group.
