Okies here is the plan. Fh campaign I see a static spell (say an illusion.) I like the spell So i decide to take it with me. I visualise it as taking the illusion and folding up the spell and more or less pocketing it (perhaps storing it in my head so I can "cast" it later). now then how would you build this? I am looking at a Major transform (spell into transportable spell) and i dont mind standing around for an hour or so... so the cumulative advantage would help keep the cost down. And the spell would automatically and easily change back when it is "cast' from my storing place. Do I need the expanded group advantage? Im not really worried ab…

Well, i've seen the movie; besides any comment about it (i liked it but disliked some aspect, like Sawyer role in the ending...) Yesterday, i was thinking about: this film can be made with HERO system! and all still working perfectly! WOW!

Should be a simple question...but I can't seem to get a "yes" or "no" to it out of the book. When buying a multiform you, obviously, have to buy it for the "true self" character, but what about the other characters? I mean, obviously you have to have it somewhere to change back, but does it have to be the same, or can it be built however you like? For instance, Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hyde, he can take the potion whenever he likes to turn to Hyde, but to turn back it's a random Accidental change sort of thing, so both forms have Multipower at the same number of max CHaracter Points, but the effects on them are different. Right?

Okay, I've been tossing around some odd character and Power Advantage ideas. One character idea I came up with was a psionic martial artist. I'm trying to figure out how to build this character both effectively (both in terms of cost and in terms of him being effective in-game) and also within both the letter and the spirit of the game rules... and to determine whether it's worth the bother. The special effect I'm going for is a character who is a reasonably skilled martial artist, and who has an advantage over most other martial artists in that, through unconscious/instantaneous precognition and telepathy, he can read his opponents' moves, thus having an advantag…

Got a question for everyone here. I'm in a campaign where one of the players is a Mentalist. She has an "invisibility power" which the special effect of is that she's mentally conviencing everyone around her that they simply "don't see her". This is fine and dandy, but wouldn't it make more sense to build it as a mental illusion? I mean, for instance, she's a 200 point Mentalist with a 50 AP limit, there's no way she'd be conviencing Professor X that he couldn't see her.....so if built like a Mental Image it would give those around her who have high ECVs the opportunity to *break out* of the "image". Thoughts?

Ok, heres my situation. I have these power generators, and they run off radioactive decay. Most have half-lifes so long that it doesn't really matter, BUT there are some high yield generators that only work for a certain amount of time, say, an hour. I've already defined all electrical systems as using endurance, via endurance reserve. My players and I are still slightly new to HERO, so I'd like to keep it simple. My best guess is an endurance reserve that has 1 Unrecoverable Continous Charge, lasting 1 hour. How would you all handle it?

When do you need to use a skill/atribute check? more appropriately how do you force someone to make a skill check? Would Change environment be the best way for a play to force others to make skill checks (admittedly at a penalty in most cases)? part of the concern is concerning setting off berzerkrolls and whether it would be better to mentally illusion things, or you could use a Change environment or something else entirely (Images w/ enough senses?) or if all three of these are appropo. Here is what is going on. Im building a set of spells that influence a particular race in a fantasy campaign(Yazarians from Star Frontiers) they can go berzer…

Has anyone else tried recreating the weapon Active/Real costs in the table on 5E pg. 332? It’s impossible in my experience. You run into trouble immediately on the first weapon, the Derringer revolver. I checked the FAQ and errata and only found a correction for the .50 Cal. HMG. Ok lets take a look at pricing a firearm in character points. The two trickiest bits are OCV and RMod. On page 333 it says that these affect the Active cost (the implication I derive from the text is they are costed out and added or subtracted directly to active points. This is against the normal Hero System mechanics.) Each point of OCV is a 5-point CSL with OAF, requires h…

I am making a character who is invulnerable to small arms fire(ie. low damage killing attacks). I have given him 15 PD armor, hardened; but I want to make him less affected by the STUN multiplier lottery. I was thinking of giving him Damage Reduction, Resistant, STUN only(-1/2), only vs killing attacks which do not get BODY through his armor. What kind of limitation does everyone think that would be? I was thinking -1/2, but want to see what you guys say. Thanks John Spencer

HKA Problems? 1 2

I am running a Champions game where I have set the Active Point cap at 60 pts. I have a player whose character has a 45 STR and a 3d6 HKA (giving him a total 6d6 HKA). Now, when I said 60 Active Points, I was thinking that the max DCs would be around 12, and created my villains to suit. Now, this character has nearly killed three or four villains. The bad part is that none of the other characters have abilities anywhere near this range. Now, this ability clearly violates the spirit of my campaign guidelines, even though it doesn't violate the letter of my guidelines. Now, I'm going to wax philosophical here for a moment. IMV, RKA and HKA is essentially the …

Being board at work, I worked up the following: Fall Safely From Any Height: Gliding 30", Combat Acceleration/Deceleration (+1/4) (37 Active Points); Only To Move Down (-1/2), Must Accelerate Wtih Gravity (-0), Must Continue Moving Until Stopped (-1/4), Only To Make Half Moves (-1/4), No Non-Combat Movement (-1/4) (total cost: 16 points) plus SPD +8 (80 Active Points); Only To Make Half Moves With Gliding (-2) (total cost: 27 points). Total Cost: 43 points. Basically it allows the character to maintain his full OCV & DCV, and to make attacks (or other Half Phase Action), while falling. Then it allows the character to land, without slowing down, without takin…

Greetings all! Just wanted to let you all know that around 8:30 EST I finished the last character sheet for the HERO System Asian Bestiary. That's 88 character sheets (actually... 88 individual files) for those keeping count at home. The actual number of write-ups is something like 95+ as one file has around 7 complete write-ups in it. In addition, many of the character sheets have extensive lists of optional powers and some character sheets are nothing *but* optional powers, so the actual creature count is around... ohhh... I have no idea... My best guess is around 150 creatures. I will be writing the Introduction over the next day or so and hope to have the fi…

Hi there. It was mentioned in an earlier post that I could make a regenerative Entangle by making it Continuous. As I recall, Continuous would cause the Entangle to effectively rebuild itself on each of my phases. My question is, how can I get it to go off every Segment. The obvious solution would be to buy up additional SPD to get a 12 SPD and apply a limitation to it. How much should that limitation be? While on the subject of a Continuous Entangle, here’s another question. If a person does a Find Weakness on the Entangle, does that Find Weakness remain after the ‘Continuous Re-Build’ occurs? I think it would, but I want to make sure Thanks …

I noticed in the TUV that all vehicles have DCV = CV without taking into account their size. For example, the Bradley on pg. 50 should have a DCV of 0 not 4 as listed due to its size. I don't see in any place in the description where they buy off the vehicle size impact. Have I missed something? They have this throughout the book. I noticed that Hero Designer correctly displays DCV which is how I originally came across the problem when I tried to input a vehicle from TUV into HD and it didn't match up.

I'll have to explain a little backstory before the question makes sense. Due to some problems I have run into in the past with limited SPD, I disallow it except in specific cases (examples of which include foci-based SPD). In particular, I disallow the "only to do X" kind of limited SPD (like Menton of CKC has). As a rule I require the character (PC or NPC) to buy the maximum possible SPD, and then use a Physical Limitation to express the fact there are thing(s) they can and/or can't do on certain phases. EXAMPLE 1. Menton is listed in CKC as having a 9 SPD -- 4 of which is bought "can only take mental actions/tk" as a -1/2 limitation. Setting aside that's…

Hi there. After all of the comments made regarding my ‘Harem topic’, I thought I would let you in on the background of what was going on and what and why I needed the help. Please forgive the length of this. I tend to be a bit long-winded once I get going. Also, bare in mind that most of what happened here, happened while we were all very tired, having finished a very long game session. So we weren’t thinking too clearly. A good while back, our group was in the middle of a multi-session adventure. This particular session was a day-and-a-half affair. Needless to say, we were very tired and not thinking all that clearly. At the end of that session, Ge…

I'm particularly looking for discussion with HERO system GMs, but all informed opinions are welcome. Steve says we're going to have to wait until ULTIMATE MENTALIST to get a real rundown of what one can accomplish using mental powers vs. machine minds. Meanwhile, what effects do you let such powers have in campaigns you run? I'm particularly interested in opinions about Mind Control vs. machines. Other than the obvious (Mind Control vs. robot characters, computers and AIs), what do you let it accomplish? Can such a character bypass/shut down electronic security systems? How about activating/shutting automatic doors? Turn the microwave on and off? Change TV cha…

Howdy all. I'm working on a character that has charges to boost his strength by taking a pill/potion. I've been reading and searching for a while now, but I can't seem to get the point total to come out correctly. Here's what I have so far: STR Pill: +20 STR (20 Active Points); 4 charges (-1), IAF (-1/2), Gestures (-1/4) (Modifiers affect Base Characteristics) I'm using Hero Designer 1.47 and it ends up costing me a whopping -6 points. The point cost changes, for some reason, whenever I raise/lower my actual Strength cost on the Characteristics screen. If I unclick the "Add Modifiers to Base Characterestics" check box, it ends up costing 7 points. Another q…

VPP Opinions 1 2 3

As the campaign has gone on, a couple characters now have gotten into VPPs. That's fine with me, both are justified in my book. For me, in the past, I never had more than one PC at a time with one (at least of any substance) so even though that campaign got high-powered it still was not much of an issue to think of. But as we grow and from general past history (as well as the efficiency of 1 of the 2 players in building powers frankly), I know the potential for issues in terms of: - ensuring expectations from the GM and player match up about just how flexible VPPs can really be - ensuring players don't always have the right power for every occassion; it'…

Hi! I have a problem. For the games I want to run I need a flexible game system, cable of creating any character (and so on), but several of my players are die hard d20 addicts. The simple answer would be, change players, but I like the players (after all they are my friends). I've tried "Mutants and Masterminds" (MnM), but I find it a bit unprecise. You can do what you want, but it's hard to do exactly what you want. SAS d20 fell through for some reason I can't remember. What I really what is to play something akin to the Hero System, so to "solve" the problem I intend to do a hybrid between the Hero system and the d20 system. Not totally unlike MnM, but m…
