Ternaugh
46 minutes ago, Michael Hopcroft said: Where do all the radioactive particles go? Do you mean the tritium (hydrogen-3)? It's probably tied up in water molecules (heavy water), and then diluted by the other seawater. Tritium is naturally found in the environment in small quantities, and tends to get processed out of the body fairly rapidly. It has a half-life of about 12.3 years, and the decay produces beta radiation. It's used in some luminescent markers for watches and gun sights. Lord Liaden
3 hours ago, archer said: Japan to release over one million tonnes of Fukushima's contaminated water into sea Any such release is expected to take at around two years to prepare, as the site's irradiated water first needs to pass through a filtration process before it can be further diluted with seawater and finally released into the ocean. In 2018, Tokyo Electric apologised after admitting its filtration systems had not removed all dangerous material from the water It plans to remove all radioactive particles from the water except tritium, an isotope of hydrogen that is hard to separate and is considered to be relatively harmless. It is common practice for nuclear plants around the world to release water that contain traces of tritium into the ocean. https://news.trust.org/item/20201016050049-72un1 I'm betting a lot of Japanese hearing this news are having visions of Shin Gojira right now... Tritium is supposedly one of the most expensive substances in the world (roughly $30,000 per gram is the number you see repeated on the internet). It must be extremely expensive to remove if it isn't worth it to even try.

Once it's part of a water molecule mixed in with regular water I don't even know how you'd separate it out.

Lord Liaden
In Chinese, "kuei" is translated as both "ghost" and "demon," so the distinction may be culture-specific. But bad juju either way. Old Man

I've personally thought that the problem with long wait times before trials should be fixed with more courts, judges, and quicker prosecutions. Very little of the wait time is because of the need to investigate or to prepare defenses.
