Pariah
The very idea of picturing Rudy Giuliani trying to make sense makes me feel like I'm losing IQ points.

I knew they weren't going to convict. I hoped, as a consolation prize, that this whole thing could produce a nice first draft of history, a sort of truth and reconciliation commission. Load up on the testimony! Make Giuliani try and make sense. The problem is that the trial prevents the Senate from doing anything else. And if the prosecution can call witnesses, the defense can call infinite witnesses to jam the Senate. I’m not happy about it either, but that’s why there was no testimony. Political violence is on the table as long as you are in the lame duck period and have a fig leaf of an excuse? 21 hours ago, archer said: Yeah, I think it's inevitable that one side or the other will in the future at some point whistle up an armed mob to take over Capitol Hill, the White House, and/or the Supreme Court while knowing that if they should fail that it's highly unlikely that they'll be held responsible. I thought we'd put all of this behind us more than 200 years ago when VP Aaron Burr raised an army to overthrow the government in what was then the western part of the US. But apparently not. How the G.O.P. Allied Itself With Militants - The New York Times www.nytimes.com/2021/02/08/us/militias... Norman Olson, founder of the Michigan Militia, appeared in June 1995 before a Senate committee investigating the growth of the anti-government movement after the Oklahoma City bombing that April. ------- a few disturbing lines: “Stand up and test that assertion of authority by the government,” Mr. Shirkey told the militiamen. “We need you now more than ever.” After the riot in Washington, some argue such endorsements endanger the future of the party. “It is like the Republican Party has its own domestic army,” said Jeff Timmer, a former executive director of the Michigan party and a vocal Trump critic. ------- Should Democrats be cultivating their own militias? Encourage Antifa to trade in sticks for AR-15s? On reflection... no. Better, I think, to cultivate the real army, whose uniformed leadership still seems to have some notion of Constitutional order. Dr. MID-Nite
While I wasn't expecting the impeachment to go through, it's still disappointing to see the will of the people ignored....again. I'm starting to think nothing good is ever going to come from our current system.

csyphrett
The only surprise out of this is my guy Rich Burr, alleged inside trader, voted to convict. Iuz the Evil
As much as there’s a tendency in me to label all GOP elected officials similarly, I am not going to dismiss those who chose to cross party aisles on this issue. They did the right thing, because it was a foundational duty of their office, and face likely challenges to their office and personal attacks for years in light of this choice. That shows a level of personal integrity and accountability. I respect that, even if I find their positions on many policy decisions reprehensible. It gives me hope for our Republic. We have got to find a way to share this country with people whose ideas we vehemently disagree with. 74.2 Americans who voted for Trump aren’t going anywhere. Nor are 81.2 million who voted for Biden. It’s critical we find a way back to being able to disagree in a civil manner using the tools of our government to do so. It’s not the first time we have been so divided, even if it’s near the top of the list. I realize how hilarious it is for me to speak of unity and reconciliation right now, but I honestly believe the vast majority of Americans would prefer that. This acrimony and division when it spills into violence and open conflict cannot be tolerated. Good for those GOP who crossed party lines on this issue. rravenwood, aylwin13, TrickstaPriest and 1 other 3
