In a thread on the Champions board, the community pondered the contents of an Astronaut Package Deal. I gave it a lot of thought and eventually visited a number of websites devoted to astronaut training. I eventually came up with this, and thought I'd post it for commentary and criticism (and world-wide acclaim... or maybe not.) ASTRONAUT Manned space flight began in the US in 1961. Two years earlier, NASA had winnowed down candidates from three U.S. military services to 7 men from the original field of five hundred and eight candidates. Six of these men flew in Project Mercury, completing tests of one-man space capsules from 1961 to 1963. Nine more military men…

http://www.livescience.com/animals/animal-warfare-could-the-taliban-train-monkeys-to-shoot-100725.html Animal Warfare: Could the Taliban Train Monkeys to Shoot? By Jeremy Hsu, LiveScience Senior Writer posted: 26 July 2010 11:02 am ET A bizarre report of Taliban insurgents training monkeys and baboons to shoot at U.S. and NATO soldiers in Afghanistan seems unrealistic at best, according to an expert. The story that appeared this month in the Chinese People's Daily suggested that insurgents used a reward-and-punishment system to train macaques and baboons to target soldiers wearing U.S. military uniforms. The Taliban supposedly "taught monkeys h…

If you're an anime fan, and you want an interesting take on the DC genre (guns, violence, chases, two-gun killers, organized crime, and so on), try and find something called Black Lagoon. Four people run a courier service out of Thailand using an old WWII PT Boat, the Black Lagoon (also the name of their company). They are smugglers, pirates, killers, and more. Check out the Church of Violence, a nunnery that smuggles guns. Hotel Moscow, the Russian mafia. Mr. Chan, who's Hong Kong Triad, and is Chow Yun-Fat in all but name (he has the same look and the gunfighting skills). Revy the psycho two-gun fighter from hell. Dutch the Vietnam vet and the brains behind the co…

This thread is for write-ups of weird weapons for Dark Champions (or other) games. I'll start. WASP Injection Knife "This weapon injects a freezing cold ball of compressed gas, approximately the size of a basketball, at 800psi nearly instantly." (The video of it blowing up a watermelon is located here.) Mainly intended (I believe, based on comments on certain forums) as a dive knife, the possibilities of this weapon are remarkable. I'll note here that I'm being extremely generous with "3 Charges" -- from user comments, it seems you get one good shot, and then one or two much smaller blows afterwards. After you fire them all off…

Or at least no one at Cyber Command appears to know. Lt. Cmdr. Steve Curry, a spokesman, says "it's definitely the mission statement" of Cyber Command. "What part of the mission statement: That's what I'm waiting to find out on from the people who designed it."..." -Carl-

I had the chance to catch another showing of "District B13" yesterday and am having some issues deciding on an appropriate martial art style for the lead character(s). It looked to me like it MIGHT be a version of Escrima combined with parkour. However, a bio of one of the lead actors states: "Utilizing shotokan karate and wushu, Raffaelli has been a regular in films with Luc Besson and David Belle....". So, since my knowledge base of martial arts styles is still a work in progress so I thought I'd ask here.....Anyone familiar with the film ? The film in question: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_13 Thanks. -Carl-

Well, hopefully. It was recently suggested that, since there wouldn't be a Super-Skill submission area for a while, that we could always start a super-skill megathread. I think this is just an excellent idea. I'll start off: Ultimate Hacking: Telepathy 8d6 (Machine class of minds), Visible To Sight And Sound Instead Of Mental Senses (+0), Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2) (60 Active Points); Extra Time (1 Turn (Post-Segment 12), minimum; -1 1/4), Limited Class Of Minds (non-AIs only; -1), OIF (computer equipment of opportunity; -1/2), Arrangement (-1/4), Requires A Computer Programming Roll (-1/2), Stops Working If Mentalist Is Stunned (-1/2), Does Not Provide Mental A…

I am running a Paranormal Dark Champions game (eerily similar to Manic Typist's Secret Wars campaign) and I need a little assistance. My players just recently killed a few hard hitting baddies (Rasputin among them) in the last session, so I think it's time to move onto the next plotline. One of the PCs has a pretty strong Hunted: Chinese Tong (I forget which one) so I've been leading them up to a confrontation for a while now. I have decided that the Tong's hierarchy will include a "team" of martial artists, all with their own theme. I'm probably going to theme each one with one of the traditional Chinese elements. I briefly considered the Zodiac, but I didn'…

I'm designing a character who is a policeman. I've stated out the mechanics of his weapons, but for Special effect purposes I need to find out what Real World sidearms I'm describing. His issue sidearm, the one carried openly in uniform, is a 2d6 RKA, holds six rounds to a clip, and he carries 4 clips, counting the one already in the weapon. "Clip" can be a speed loader for a revolver or a magazine for an automatic. Personally I think there are advantages to revolvers, but I'm not aware of any major city PD in the US that still issues them. This weapon is unmodified, standard issue (specifically: designed for the right-handed majority). His backup / off dut…

I'm working on writing up a street gang. One feature is going to be a "whistle code," a few bars of a tune casually whistled will signal gang members in earshot. Could just handwave it, but would like the players to have a chance to "break the code." Only signal I've decided on is the Theme from Hawaii Five-O means "police approaching/in the area." What songs, recognizable by 21st century youth in ten notes or less, would be useful in organizing the gang and subtly signaling tactics? Thanks in advance to everybody!

How do you guys handle having a crew of injured PCs? Do you let them say "we lay low for a while" and skip ahead a few weeks? That seems an awful lot like letting them zip back to full health in between each fight scene (a la video games). I also don't want my two PCs (at 4 and 0 body) to die at the drop of a hat. One of the PCs has some good medicinal skills so that helps. I've handled this situation carefully but slowly, but for future reference: How do you deal with injured PCs? How much do you speed up healing for things like first aid, medical care, ER visits, etc?

I strive for consistency. The way I see it, the more thorough and consistent I am in my running and rulings, the easier it will be for me and the players and the more fun will be had all around. It also is more fair. They will be able to know the answer to many of the questions without asking me, and then if there's every an exception they'll take note of it as important because it's an exception. I use Hit Locations in my Dark Champions (Secret Wars) game. Vitals can represent the lower stomach/pelvis area, but I also often treat it as the throat, arteries, etc based upon what I feel makes sense. So far, so good. However, my PCs recently acquired body armo…

Female Don Blake/Thor-type character*, but in Dark Champions. She first uncovers/receives her powers (i.e., is transformed and inhabited by Norse spirit) as her family is being slaughtered by vampires. I'm looking for a way for her to trigger her OHID transformation that is limiting and interesting without being cute. Something like Don Blake or Billy Batson, but more...er...dunno - Dark Champions. *Without the whole thing about how Don Blake was always really Thor, before finding the cane, etc. Thanks for any suggestions.
