This is another drop in thread. Many characters are from The West Wing. Some Secret Service agents are from other programs. This is based, slightly, on an incident mentioned in the 1986 routebook of the Carson & Barnes Circus. According to the report, the Secretary of Education, and family, complete with big black cars, police escort, and security, visited the 4 PM show. Secret Service agent Kelsey Innis frowned when she saw the motorhome on the lot that in the morning would be home, for one day, for the Ross Brothers Circus. She waved to the woman, dressed like a working cowgirl, that stood by it. The cowgirl waved back. "Help you?" the cowgirl aske…

This is another "drop in anywhere" thread. Under consideration are Marvel's character Tigra and Catherine Willows of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. You can change Tigra's civilian identity if needed. Simply put, Catherine, a widowed crime scene investigator, and former exotic dancer, in the campaign city, is a metahuman. She can, at will, become either a were-tiger or a regular tiger. In either case, she keeps her full human INT and EGO as well as her skills Catherine can also sharpen her senses, one at a time, to superhuman levels and grow fangs and/or claws at will. Finally, although born out of wedlock, she's the only child of a billionaire hotel/…

I'm in the early stages of creating a new game, with gritty street level vigilante heroes. I asked my players for background ideas that would help facilitate cooperative role-playing. To this end I required that... 1) The characters would know each other and be on friendly terms at the beginning of the game. 2) No "lone wolfs" of any type. 3) Have some reasonably "realistic" motivations to risk their lives, freedom and reputations by becoming vigilantes. The players then decided that they would all be elite ex-military men who were exposed to unknown chemicals during the early operations of the Iraq invasion. This exposure, while causing no adverse effects a…

The Upside: Dark Champions is the genre book for Modern Action, Street Supers, Vigilante and associated genres. Mostly it concentrates on Modern Action and other modern genres. Chapter One - The Dark Champions Genre. The chapter starts out with a discussion on exactly what Dark Champions covers. It goes over subgenres, metagenres and elements that make up most Dark Champions games. Starting with the typical street vigilante style game, and covering all the way to games that include fantastic elements such as Monster Hunter campaigns. While short, it covers a lot of ground and does a good job of explaining the basic elements that make up a Dark Champions game. …

Most government liaisons are people the team can work well with. Unfortunately, the Bat Team's isn't like that. Once Batman was crippled, and a new team formed, with Batgirl as a member, to protect Gotham City, the politically powerful, and corrupt, Senator Roark made sure the team's assigned liaison was the kind of man he wanted, klutzy and inept. (If it helps, think of him as being a combination of Roger Fox, from the comic strip FoxTrot, and Ralph Drabble, from the comic strip Drabble.) The only thing that saves him from being a complete screwup is his assistant. Until she was set up, and caught, by the agency, she enjoyed a career as a jet setting cat bur…

Until his murder by Hush, Harold was Batman's engineer. Although unschooled, he was a savant. Although our engineer could be either male or female, I'll use the male gender for expediency. He was born to a low-income family. After his parents were killed by a hit and run driver when he was seven, he was put into the child welfare system. At age sixteen, he ran away and ecked out a living by repairing stuff for fellow homeless. By luck, on his twenty second birthday, he was found by a hero and, since then, has been the engineer for either the hero or the team the hero is a member of. Comments, ideas, questions?

I just bought Dark Champions and I have a question about grenades. On p. 251, what's with the multiple entries for generic "Fragmentation" and "Concussion" grenades? I want to know what the common M26A1 does. Also, in the notes for tear gas on p. 255 (#22), why is tear gas treated as a Flash attack to the Sight sense group? Shouldn't it do a lot more that just hinder your vision?

As per Steven Long's suggestion, I am re-posting this advice request on this board. It was originally on the Other Genres board. I'd like advice from anyone with experience at running a campaign in the style of the TV show, CSI: crime scene investigations. How do you design the adventures? How do you keep the players on track without railroading them or resorting to deus ex machinas? Also, I'd like to know how to verbally describe crime scenes in order to give the players all the necessary info and clues without creating an infodump which gives away the game at the start. How much detail should I offer when the PCs arrive on the scene? How much should I …

The Upside: Hudson City: The Urban Abyss is a setting book for Dark Champions. For those who aren't familiar with Dark Champions, or are familiar with the original sourcebook, this is not Street-Superheroes. Hudson City takes a look at campaigning in a crime ridden, corrupt modern city. Located in New Jersey. Hudson City paints a picture of a city filled with urban rot, corruption and under the iron grip of organized crime. In other words, Hudson City is the perfect place for a modern setting with a dark overlay. The setting assumes the moderately small scope of a large urban center, world changing events are not the focus. The vigilantes themselves walk a thin …

Man, it's been an age since the last time I was on this board. Anyway, I'm toying with the idea of running a Dark Champions game. But the last time I picked up the Hero System was a looooong time ago. I don't know how significant the changes are to 5th Rev. What I'm looking for is a fast resolution system for combat. Now again, it's been some time since I ran the Hero System, but I seem to recall that the basics were pretty quick, but the options for combat quickly bogged things down. My question to the community is, is combat faster now in the new edition? Or are there suggestions you can make to keep combat from getting bogged down? I know hero i…

I know nobody likes the way Civil War was handled, but I have to admit, I'm rather pleased that one of the outcomes is the fact that there are more sources for Dark Champions themed heroes. For those of you not in the know, following Captain America's surrender, the current membership of The New Avengers decided not to register and remain underground fugitives. The end result is that the outlaw vigilantes have to use a lot of streetwise knowledge and espionage style tradecraft (and magic courtesy of Dr Strange) to stay out of SHIELD's reach. The team is led by Luke Cage, who has recently just been using his last name as a superhero handle instead of PowerMan. Fo…

A campaign that shares the Twilight 2000 RPG theme: World War III. What stays the same: ~It is Earth as it is known and understood. ~The history and politics are identical to Earth's until 4-24-2007. ~A Nuclear Exchange takes place. What's different: ~Use of the HERO System's Dark Champions rules.

Not that I needed any reason to get the book, I was sold after getting and reading the Dark Champions corebook (tho I'll be honest and admit it took me awhile, its a biiiiig book ); but that preview of the cover. Wow. Very nice work. Hope you don't mind if I use that as my new desktop wallpaper ;-) Keep up the good writing and the great cover art. Peace.

This version of Black Widow is for the IST San Angelo campaign. In this version, she worked for MI6 before she became metahuman. Forced, by rules, to do so, she resigned from MI6. She is a skilled gymnast, seductress, actress, driver, and burglar. She is also adept at armed and unarmed combat. When she received her powers, she found that her agility increased to metahuman level and that she could to walk on walls and ceilings and fire stun bolts from her hands.

I'm using the Victory Party in a Dark Champions w/ Powers game. Since my PCs are 375 characters with powers (but also with Normal characteristic maxima), I felt that beefing some of the villains in Predators might be a good idea: Dr Spregen's genetic skills are more advanced than listed in the book and he has augmented the core members of the Victory Brigade to have primary physical stats (STR, DEX, CON & BODY) scores of 18-20 (ubermen). Their mental stats are largely unchanged, though they have 5-8 pts of mental defense to reflect their ability to focus and dedication to the cause, backed up by genetics, of course. Their eyesight has been augmented to give them …

So, apparently my 1/2/06 thought was to run a HERO Delta Green campaign: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40094&page=2&highlight=%22delta+green%22 Didn't happen. Although I did not have a copy of Delta Green, I did have Countdown and had perused a friend's copy of DG. However, I now have a copy of the new Delta Green (w/ D20 stats included): http://www.yog-sothoth.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=9517 I am going to resolve to get something done for 2007. Hopefully you won't be seeing this same "wish" post in 2008. Sigh.

I am preparing to run an espionage campaign. I want it to be cinematic. I am thinking along the lines of The Bourne Identity and MI-5. Maybe as far as Alias. As much as I love Bond movies, I feel many of them cross the line of 'believability'. I was originally thinking 100 base points and 50 points from Disadvantages. After trying to stat up some characters this weekend, I am thinking I need to go 150 base and 50 Disadvantages. Has anyone else run this sort of game, what point level did you use and what point level would you suggest?

Review of Predators up at RPG.Net In Brief: Style: 3 (about average for this type of book) Substance: 4 (lots of NPC goodness) Eighty-Five villains, thugs, assassins, thieves and crimelords for a modern action game. Especially useful for those using Hero Games' Hudson City Setting, but easily useable in any modern campaign.

Is there a document somewhere that tells me what district or map segment buildings mentioned in the HC book are located in? For example, there is a large list of newspapers but the descriptions of the papers don't say where they are located. Right now I'm specifically looking for the location of the Hudson City Mirror. Perhaps they aren't even placed on a map.
