In brainstorming ideas for an alternate US history for my DC campaign I had an idea that could be pushing the boundaries of good taste. You know in the real world today (and in fictional worlds like Law & Order) how if you have money you can get away with breaking the laws. With money you can hire good defense lawyers, investigate the prosecution's witnesses for dirty laundry, hire experts, and even resort to bribery so you can be found not guilty. So I thought, why not just skip the smoke and mirrors and allow defendants to walk away from any charge if they pay a fine equal to what the DA's office the defendant would have to spend to be found not guilty? If the …

I am having a great deal of difficulty trying to decide on something with regards to armor and killing attacks. A friend of mine is suggesting that I use the following house rule in my upcoming DC game: apply the body damage of the killing attack normally but when calculating stun take only the body that has penetrated the resistant defense and multiply it by the stun multiplier and then apply the non-resistant defense against the stun. The main problem I have with this is that it makes killing attacks do very little stun. His philosophy makes sense for some types of killing damage. Knives, and other cutting attacks have relatively little force behind them and so…

Typically heroic campaigns use knockdown rather than knockback but some attacks I would think should still do knockback such as a fire hose or getting smacked with something really big. How would you purchase an attack that does knockback in a heroic campaign that is using knockdown rules by default?

I've loved the series, but the finale blew me away. This is a fantastic show. I hope it gets picked up again for next year.

Just a heads up: Apparently premiering tonight (just before the season 2 premier of Heroes ), this show has some poor schmuck who works as an employee of "the nerd herd" (ie: the geek squad) at your local electronics mega-store. From what I can gather, he has eidetic memory and thru happenstance views a set of images encrypted with "world breaking secrets". So of course the US government assigns a uber-agent to protect him and the secrets in his head.... Not precisely dark and gritty but it might make a reasonable source for ideas for a less serious set of adventures.

Hey Gang, Just got this freebie from Blockbuster that's a preview of a fistful of new NBC shows: Life, Journeyman, & The Bionic Woman. Life has a pretty good DC character origin. Detective Charlie Crews (played by Damien Lewis--who's excellent in Band of Brothers) is a cop that's been in a maximum security prison for 12 years. Turns out some new DNA evidence proves that he's innocent. As part of his settlement he: 1. Gets a crapload of money, and 2. Is reinstated on the LAPD. So, the show starts with his first case back. We discover that he got attacked a number of times in prison... and that inside of gettting Jesus in the joint, he got Buddha…

Since making this character on CoV (Kapitan Chen on the Virtue Server), I've been thinking, "She would be a GREAT villain for a Dark Champions game." So here I am. Here is Kapitan Xi Wu Chen, her second in command, and her agents. --------------------- Kapitan Xi Wu Chen: A Half-Russian, Half-Chinese woman born in Moscow, her father died in combat shortly before she was born. Her half-Russian status was trumped by her father dying a hero, and she found herself following in his footsteps. A natural born soldier and leader, Chen was involved in a military patrol of a town where a small rebellion was being formed. After saving her friend, Boris Sokolov, from …

I apologize in advance. this is a bit lengthy. I imagine this issue has been discussed on this forum before but I can't find it in past posts so I will raise the question again. I am starting a new DC campaign in a couple of weeks and before the game begins I need to address is the proper balance between damage and defenses. I want to make sure that combat has a certain degree of lethality to it. If the players launch themselves into combat with no regard for the amount of damage they are throwing around then they will kill most of the opponents they face. In other words if they want to leave opponents alive they have to exercise some restraint. This wi…

I just saw this... This is the most batsh*t insane gunfight movie ever! And having watched numerous John Woo flics, that's saying something. Clive Owen plays one of the most whacked gunfighters you'll ever see, and seems to be even more out of control than Revi (from Black Lagoon)... although I'm not 100% sure. I will admit, it has only the barest of plots, but loads of over-the-top action. No... more over-the-top than that. This movie is what Feng Shui is all about, and offers someone who might be able to out do a Grammaton Cleric. There's probably no way to build this guy with just levels -- he's built with powers designed as "super skills." And he's probably a wh…

Yet another drop-in. Our topic for today involves a modern version of the Amazons from Xena: Warrior Princess. In about 250 B.C., Rome sent two Legions (2000 men) after the Amazons. While their sisters fled into man's world, 200 Amazons acted to delay the soldiers. In the end, all 200 died, taking over 1000 Romans with them. Modern Amazons worship Artemis, have knowledge of Amazons customs, have at least 10 points in martial arts, speak, read, and write Greek, have trained in ancient and modern weapons, fight the good fight, and are loyal to their clan, the Amazon queen, and Artemis, their patron Goddess. I hope to eventually come up with a package deal …

Hopefully, I'm not gushing, but the movie The Brave One should be required watching for anybody who plays or runs Dark Champions. This movie stars Jodi Foster and to be honest, it gets seriously dark and nasty about the whole vigilante thing, plus throws in a surprise ending that really makes the movie genuinely enjoyable. There's plenty to nitpick as well, but overall it is an excellent movie. Don't let the slow start keep you from enjoying the whole thing -- it takes a while to set everything up, after all. Watching the main character slide from the mundane to the surreal was the most enjoyable, and it was done so well that congradulations are in order for the writ…

Fred Young always wanted to be in movies. Unfortunately, nobody wanted someone with a face that looked like a car crash starring in a motion picture. He had to settle for being a costume artist, something he was very good at. Eventually, though, his employer, Dreammaking Studios, closed down. When he found out that his girlfriend (the only person who, he thought, loved him) was sleeping with someone else behind his back, he left Hollywood in greif and went to Hudson City. Eventually he was 'discovered' by the Mafia, who offered him a small fortune in exchange for his services. Being a master of disguise, he could infiltrate almost any area, and this made for a v…

Figured a horror film character belongs on this board...cause I can't think of where else to put him. Anyone ever written up horror character like Jason Voorhees? Curious as to how strong an undead brick from a horror movie is. And how much stronger he is for having many of the stronger Automaton powers.

A 50+50 NPC who can serve as an informant to the PCs in an Oracle-ish way. In Hudson City (or wherever your campaign is) there is a lot of people who know things about the underworld. But nobody can boast the knowledge of Mr. Anonymous. He's not easy to find, in fact, more often than not, he finds clients first. A vigilante with money to spare and a need to know something. For a fee, Mr. Anonymous will give people tips to help those who he conducts business with. Nobody knows that, in reality, Mr. Anonymous has a large network of informants from just about every criminal organization in town. This secret is closely guarded by him, but with the exception of …

Hi, my name is Remjin, and I'm a gunaholic... It all began when I was just a teenager and I discovered the movie Hard Boiled. I was in awe of its gross disregard for life or the cost of ammunition. Ever since, I have soaked up all the gun kata that film has to offer... and I am not ashamed. (though some of the moviemakers should be) So I'm sitting here thinking about the whole deal and thought it might be nice to list and discuss some of our favorite archetypes of this kind. These are the archetypes I'm most familiar with and would like to hear more. "Dirty Harry" archetype consists of a sharpshooting man with a very big gun. Usually a pistol. I am currentl…

Sorry if these have been asked before but I have questions about Resource Pools. 1) How does a GM keep players from exceeding their armory points? It's one thing to say "you have a 90 point limit" but what reason does the character have for staying within the limit? If there's physical room in his armory (say a footlocker) to hold 5 pistols of 20 pts each (giving him an armory of 100 pts) why should the character throw one of the guns away? 2) What happens if a character finds equipment that exceeds his/her "improved equipment" level? Say a Fed Up Normal (standard equipment) stumbles on an arms shipment and decides to take some SMGs before calling the police. …

This is a character based on the real-life killer Nevada-tan. She's built as a Skilled Normal. Background: In 2004, an eleven-year-old Japanese schoolgirl murdered a classmate. Her name was never released to the public, known as "Suspect A" officially and "Nevada-tan" elsewhere. She is, officially, still in prison. Unofficially, though, she escaped in June 2007 with another delinquent, and, after stealing some money, she went to the yakuza to pay for passports. When she learned they only had enough money for one passport and one plane ticket, she murdered her accomplice and quietly fled to the United States as Sakura Hazumi, going to Hudson City to meet her gran…

I initially posted this search in the Champions forum and a poster there wisely suggested I might ask here so..... I'm building a Batman homage (or more accurately, a "Batmans' heir" homage) and am looking for the CU equivalant to the group "The League Of Shadows", which we see rear its' head in the film Batman Begins to use as a hunted. The char in question is the second person to use that heroic name and imagery. The first hero using the name was her uncle, circa 1930's-ish to 1970's-ish and she sort of inherits his hunted by the League, since as far as they are concerned anyone who emulates that heroes goals and beliefs must be their enem…

I'm trying to recreate the Painful shot power skill from the Dark Champions book, page 118. The Naked Advantage keeps coming up to 0 points and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. This is how I built it... Painful Shot: Naked Advantage: for up to 60 Active Points, +2 Increased STUN Multiplier for any firearm built up to 60 points (+1/2) (0 Active Points); OIF (Firearms of opportunity; -1/2), Requires A Trickshooting Roll (-1/2) (I'm not sure how to post the character sheets in the forums so I posted it this way.) Can anyone help me?
