Merely pleased with myself for coming up with this so I thought I would post. The party is currently in Hommlet and will be eventually procceding onto the Temple of Elemental Evil. The game system is Hero (Fantasy Hero), so basically I have converted the AD&D modules into Hero System. I will preface by saying that the character said they have no idea about the birthmark and left the specifics up to me. They were also leaving the deal about attracting people who think she is a "chosen one" of some sort up to me. I think they rolled up a random background using the "Heroes of Legend" book (an OOP generic suplement produced by Task Force games in the distant past). T…

So, I'm toying with adding a new area to my game: the Pearl Islands. This is a small group of islands noted both for the high quality pearls grown there (hence the name) and the population of Sirens that make them dangerous. There is a small human population - the Pearl Islanders I am talking about. I'm thinking that this group experience hereditary deafness, giving them immunity to the Sirens' calls. They communicate with sign language, which is also understood by some of the merchants who trade for the pearls, and by some of the Sirens. Marriage outside their community can give rise to hearing children, who are at risk from the Sirens. They can also intermar…

As I said in Mr. R's "Help Me Flesh Out My City" thread, I wrote this for players of my latest D&D campaign. However, I tried to stay away from game terms, so I hope it's comprehensible even if you don't know D&D; and relevant to the forum because most of it is mechanics-independent. The goal was to help players make characters who would fit well in the setting. Moreover, I hoped players would *want* to make characters for the setting. Most of the players came through (though I have very good players who deserve a lot of the credit). I also tried to get away from the "encyclopedia article" style that sometimes afflicts setting descriptions,…

Trying to figure out how to cost this build. Here’s the fluff: I turn into swirly mist and send out misty tendrils (of mist!) that can turn anyone nearby I choose into the aforementioned swirly mist, then draws us into a big ol' knot of swirly mist (BOKOSM). Said BOKOSM then flies off to our destination, and we all turn back into ourselves. If I try and pick you but you don’t want to go, you can attempt to avoid it. Crunchy bits: “anyone nearby” is within about 10 meters; “flies off to somewhere” doesn’t need to be Flight (I am currently using Teleport, Must Cross Intervening Space) and is within about 10 km; “try to avoid it” is currently the requ…

Ok... very basic and likely silly question but something that I run into whenever I try to work with HERO in a non-supers capacity. I am hoping that you all might have some insights to help me re-align my thinking. With Champions, the statistics spread for characters tends to be a bit broader as well as having powers that help differentiate characters from each other fairly easily. However, whenever I sit down to work at the Heroic level (specifically trying to work on a fantasy hero game for a friend) I am finding that the characters tend to really look similar due to Normal Characteristics Maxima. For example Stats in Heroic level HERO tend to fall into the 10-…

Today's dumb question: suppose you had ornithopters (aircraft that fly like birds), but were restricted to sailing ships on the surface. Ignore the why - it's fantasy weirdness. Most of the space above the decks of your ships is covered by masts, sails and ropes. Your ornithopters have aircraft like wing spans. How would you go about launching 'thopters from such a ship? I have some ideas, but I would like some more.

Something that has long bothered me: if the Sun is a Chariot, Boat or Beetle Pushing a Giant Flaming Ball of Dung, why are there so many Sun Gods?

Given what I have just learned about metal deposits and how these metals were worked, I am wondering if I will place my world at a Bronze or Iron Age. So which way would you go?

Hi folks First post so be gentle! After many years (like 35+) I have found all my RPGs in the loft, retrieved them and sorted them. One of them is FH 1e rules with the Bestiary. Doing my research I have found the 6e version is/was a 482 page tome. I always liked FH for the total freedom it gave you and am keen to write up my fantasy world without elves and halflings (although I like dwarves so they're in!) My question is - is the 6e 482 page tome worth buying? Thank you for your thoughts John

Here is a YouTube channel that is devoted to that. I watched about four-five episodes so far and I find it very informative! https://www.youtube.com/@WorldbuildingCorner/videos

One of the things the system is often critiqued for is not giving a character the ability to defend and area, stopping opponents from just moving past them unimpeded. What about a talent based on Barrier, when the warrior uses a defensive stance they can create an effective blade barrier, stopping anyone from getting past unless they can overwhelm the defence, doing enough damage to dismiss the barrier. I reckon the Barrier would be bought with no BODY, you either break through or you don't. The barrier would also be instant, created anew each phase. Has someone had this revelation before? Have I been labouring for rubbish handwoven s…

Fantasy Hero was an awesome name in 1985, it perfectly captured the genre and flavor of the game, and tied it to the larger hero ecosystem. These days, in the age of the web, I find it is virtually impossible to find Fantasy Hero content on web search engines. I get an endless list of computer games, other RPGs, articles, artwork... nearly anything except the fantasy RPG from Hero Games. Maybe smart search like Bing+ChatGPT will make that easier, but it is interesting how a name that was perfect for the non-digital age is almost perfectly designed to be invisible in the digital age. Just an observation.

Got any good tips? Those of us who are past a certain age remember fondly the Goodman's tips in the old Champions books. They were bits on how to build a character more efficiently (13 and 18 are great break points in stats!). The story behind them is great, apparently there was a buddy of one of the writers named Goodman who wasn't a big gamer but he was one of those guys who always knew just instinctively how to squeeze the most out of any rule set and so the bit was slipped into the books. I have been thinking over some of those, most of them still apply but are less efficient than before (like buying your CON up to push like 4 other stats, pl…

For a while, the experimented on liquid fueled firearms. You may have done it yourself with potatoes, or (flaming) tennis balls. With the adoption of flame throwers, and the explosive potential therein, talented engineers could bring consistency to liquid fueled firearms. Liquid explosive consistency of charge is now settles in the fuel injection of cars..

I’m trying to design a magic system for my setting, this type of magic user relies on two things to work their magic, for now I’m referring to them as the gate and key. In the magicians sanctum is a permanent altar or circle, with connected diagrams, material components, precise positioning, etc that give the user access to a number of powers so long as the arrangement stays in place. This is the gate that the majority of their power comes from. I’m thinking of building this as a VPP with the following restrictions: Only be changed with access to the sanctum and time to rearrange the diagrams, material components, and the like. (Takes se…

I have four weapon based MA, two non-weapon based MA, and then I realized, I have nothing for the Robin the Hood types, the Hou Yi wannabe, Mr. Tell and the apple. So I ask if any of you have ever made a Ranged MA for your campaign? What did it look like? Any suggestions?

Can anyone point to a good resource for write-ups of skeletons and other simple undead? Steve Long's Elvensong Skellies PDF doesn't seem to be available anymore, and the Monster Mash volume in the store for FH v6 says it's "new takes on undead," and I just want simple, low-threat undead. Any pointers appreciated.

The Dosao Style of magic is one that is very structured (X4 Dispel ) but relies on precise words, gestures and minutie (Gest, Incan, Ext Time). Lockland, a Dasao practitioner, is casting a spell hoping to take out the enemy spell caster. But he decides to do extra focus to really power his spell. Finally his spell goes off. He hits the enemy and feels satisfaction when he appears to drop. (Game Speak he has a 30 point MP with a 6d6 EB slot. He decided to Haymaker the spell.) 1- Is this legal? 2- Since he has Extra Time as a limitation, when does his haymaker spell strike? Assuming SPD 3 and he begins on phase 8, does it hit on the…

I am compiling a list of special abilities for (mostly ) warriors and rogues. Most I found on the sight of M. Shrike, and I made a list. But if you can think of any others that you have used in your game, please add!

So in addition to the four b's of weapon styles (one hand, paired, sword and board, two handed) I want to make some non weapon MA. OK, I am not having this problem right now, but JIC! I made a NPC, assassin type with Deadly Blow +2d6 KA. Questions: Does this apply to ranged attacks like bow or slings? If I have magic weapon that is 0 End and Armor Piercing do I prorate the Damage? How Much? Do I count both the 0 End and AP (therefore making it + 1d6)? (To me that is making having a magic weapon MUCH less useful as a normal weapon will add the 2d6 ) Any other suggestions!

Well, this idea might have been used before. What if the PCs are not the good guys but some baddies? First problem, for me, is how much of evil are they allowed to be without spoiling the fun. Some things are not fun in a game, I won't like the PCs raping peasants and beating baby seals. One solution is "comedic evil", but I want a serious approach. Another ideas are "evil can turn against itself, sometimes" or "you see, the minions of the Dark Lord are not so different from people working for unethical corporations and bosses they hate just beacause the money". So, inspired by the Turakian Age, I have more or less this outline for a long adventure, an…

I'm going a bit closer to sub-Tolkien D&D style fantasy than I usually do. One of the things that that requires are Tolkien-esque PC "races". I've got a handle on Elves as being more like Moorcock's Melniboneans, with influences from Poul Anderson, Terry Pratchett and others. I'm struggling with Halflings and Dwarves though. For Dwarves, there's CS Lewis, Pratchett, Snow White(!) and various minor sources. For Halflings there's Tolkien - and D&D. Nelwyns from Willow could be either - and that's the problem. Why have both? (And don't get me started on Gnomes!) OK, Dwarves live underground and are miners, while Halflings live on the surface a…
