Over in the Starhero section in the weapon damage thread Champsguy had an idea for using Standard Effect for the damage of really big weapons which I think has some potential and it gave me another idea based on Standard Effect. So I got to thinking, if the basic Standard Effect provides average damage and is a -/+0 lim/ adv, then it makes sense that you should be able to buy it higher or lower than average for an additional cost or savings. For example Standard effect -1 so every KA die would only do 2 points of body, or as an advantage Standard Effect +1, +2, +3 so each die would do 4,5 or 6 (max damage) instead of rolling. So how much do you think this sh…

Re: Contacts, Language and Teleportation I had to do something similar to this with our base's AI. Universal translator is only good for two-way communication. In other words you cannot just sit down and write a letter in Japanese with Universal Translator, it must be two-way communication. My solution was a 6 point VPP, No skill roll required, 0 Phase action to change pool, only for languages. It works pretty good. Of course you'd have to boost the point in the pool if you want to understand more that one language in a phase.

Okay I'm creating a character that can sense animals in a 10Km radius, this is what I have an why: Detect: Animals (pretty obvious) Mental Sense Group (My character and I want it that way) 360 arc of perception (I said radius remember) Discriminatory (gotta tell what kind of animals) Megascale: 1"= 1/2Km (faq says you can scale down megascale and I figure anything closer than 500 meters I can see with my eyes) Now Mental Sense Group is already ranged by default, but it doesn't say how far the range is so I'm figuring that it is at least 20" (to get the full 10Km radius). Does anyone see a better way of doing this (the megascale gets a little ichy an…

In TUV, p63-67, ther are four examples of anchors. All of them are built as STR, 0 END (+1/2), OIF Bulky (-1), Partial Coverage (-2). Um, Partial Coverage on STR?? FrED p.316 says Partial Limitation is for DEF and Body. TUV p.31 mentions "Only Within Affected Area", but that's not what an anchor does. An anchor has "strength" to hold the ship in place. Should those example ships have "Only To Limit Ship's Movement" instead of "Partial Coverage" on their anchors' STR? And is that really worth -2?? -- The world is a looking glass and gives back to every man the reflection of his own face. -- Thackeray, William M.

I feel quite lost with all the opportunities of the HS. Even if I am an old gamer (I've been playing quite a lot since 1987), I miss some perspective with Hero System. So, in my current game (Fading Suns), I started with another system, I used "global" Psi powers. So, the "mentalist" knew the "mental" power and the "matier" power. The list was originaly a three powers list with "energy" power, and a forth came in, the "deplacement" power (mixed of energy and matier powers). The idea was : "your character is free. Tell me what you want, I'll give you a task number". So, with his "mental" power, he could : - read mind - use telepathy - convince others…

I looked through the talent and perlks in the toolkit and can't find anything that enhance perception. Should I do as if it was a lightning reflexe for int, with a +1 bonus for 5 points ?

While reading the thread about the Origin Awards a lot of people have said that Champions isn't the best supplement, typically people say Star Hero is, but one person said the UMA (don't remember who). I started thinking about this, while I agree that Star Hero is probably the best IMHO, why did I not even put the UMA in the running? The more I thought about it I decided that it was because I felt I didn't really need it. If you have 4th ed UMA 5th doesn't give you a whole lot more. I loved 4th ed UMA and it was my most used book. If I didn't have it I probably would have said 5th ed UMA was the best or tied with the best book. Anyone else notice themselves doing this?

I've already posted that in the OCV/DCV topic, ut I'd like the broader hemp possible, please. I don't understand the CSL : For 2 points, you have a+1 OCV for an attack (which means one that is listed in the common list (disarm, brace, move by) with a weapon, or kisk, punch... or attack with a sword or attack with a melee weapon ?) For 3 points, you may have +1 in 3 manoeuvers r a tight group of attacks (meaning whatever you do as manoeuver when you attack a +1 OCV with that kind of attack, lke sword, or +1 in Disarm, Move by and move throught with a sword...). Can't you use it for a +1 DCV against that type of attack ? For 5 points, it is more generic,…

I'm trying to figure out a way to do a Power that activates every time X happens. For example: a) Every time the character takes 2d6 steps when outdoors, lightning randomly strikes somewhere within a set radius around him. Every time the character sneezes, the person closest to him turns to stone. c) Every time the character is touched, a random demon from Hell is Summoned. I thought of using Trigger, but there's two problems with that: 1. Since the effects I considered were mostly negative, it's really not likely that the character would ever choose to "set up" the Trigger for them to begin with. 2. Even when the effect isn't negative…

Insanity, How To

How does HERO handle Insanity? Psychological limitation, yes. What I am looking for is a Cthulu like Insanity power. The characters simply witness a horrific being, and their mind recoils in horror: That Thing Which Should Not Be. To view it is to tempt insanity, only the strongest wills may resist, but even their resistances can wear down the more they witness these beings. How would I build this power? I was thinking Major Transform: Sane to Insane. Based on ECV. They must be close enough to the Horror and they have to be able to see it. AOE, continuous, damage shield?

Quantized: Advantage for review

Quantized (+1/4, or +3/4 if attack is special like NND or AVLD) While Autofire allows a character build a greater power out of smaller pieces, Quantized can break a larger power into its smaller components. This advantage works best for attack powers, but it could be applied to any power with discrete “steps.†It allows a character to break up the power and apply separating dice of damage, the “steps,†as autofire shots. Quantized Example [*]88 pts - 10d6 EB with Autofire (5 shots, +1/2), Quantized (+1/4) [*]56 pts - 5d6 EB with Autofire (10 shots, +1), Quantized (+1/4) [/list=1] One - Allows a character to do 5 – 10d6 blasts, 10 – 5d6 bla…

Greetings. Looks like my old account has been deleted. Anyways: I have read (and used as well as enjoyed) Hero System 5th Edition, Hero System Bestiary and The Ultimate Martial Artist. Now, onto my question: What the heck should I get next? I have played several fantasy and scifi campaigns so far. What would be wise additional literature to widen my horizon regarding the beloved Hero System? I have no plans for a new campaign so far. Thanks for any help or suggestion Hitch

Heya gang. Lately a couple of my computer-gaming friends have been trying to get me over my "RTS-prejudice", especially related to StarCraft, so I'd join them for some games of SC. In particular, they countered my usual "it's just about who builds the most the quickest" with the argument that the units all have natural counters -- although, amusingly, sometimes they suggested the same unit to counter each other, but the RTS thing is a rant for another day. It got me thinking about to what extent this concept exists in HERO, however. Here's what I've worked up so far; I'd like to see what y'all think and what y'all can add. One rule -- certain counters are so…

OK, folks, it’s time to get serious about the Origins Award write-in campaign that I’ve hinted at previously. To briefly recap, Hero Games products, including 5E, were completely shut out of the nominations for the 2002 Origins Awards, despite the high quality and importance of our 2002 releases. We want to correct this grievous oversight by mounting a write-in campaign. To succeed, we need YOUR help — and the help of anyone else you can recruit to vote on our behalf. If you’d like to know more, or would like to get directions on how to vote and other things you can do to help, please visit: http://www.herogames.com/news/newsWriteInCampaign.htm …

From the Rules FAQ: Um, okay. I don't like that ruling, but okay. So the question is this: How would I legally build an attack like the one described? I'm thinking of an attack that works kind of like a contagious disease, where anyone exposed became a "carrier" and would pass it on to anyone that that passed within a few feet ad infinitum. Is this possible, or would I need some kind of new "Extra Sticky" Advantage?

I seem to be having a hard time getting damage classes figured correctly. In the game I'm running I have a character playing a samurai using kenjutsu from the UMA. I ran a test combat between him and another player. the samurai with 2 swipes of his weapon was able to kill the character quickly ....too quickly it seemed. the base damage for a katana is 1 1/2d6 which would make it a DC5. Using lightining stroke adds +2DC which I originally thought would make it a total DC 7( 2d6+1) but after reading the UMA page 102 under killing damage the +2DC from the manuever would actully only add +1DC to the weapon damage making it a DC6 (2d6). Now according the the damage rules in …

I'm trying to simulate a creature of magical origin who can be struck by a clumsy non-combatant with a strong will as easily as a highly trained fighter. The intent is that, when fighting such a creature, a strong will (EGO) counts as much (if not more) as a quick and steady hand (DEX). Would this best be done as a physical disadvantage or a limitiation of some kind on DEX... or both? Charlie

Trying to create a character that is essentially an angel. I want him to have a damage shield that only affects that people that are trying to harm him. Here's how I bought it so far. 8d6 EB (divine energy) continuous +1, damage shield +1/2, No end +1/2, no knockback -1/2 The trick is to have the affect only trigger when living beings with malicious intent touch (grab/attack) him. I was considering it a limitation (only works against living things with malicious intent -1/2) What do you guys think? Also, I wanted to have a Recognition power that affects things that I touch (uncontrollable). So its not really location limitted. I.e. I might pick u…

I have a question on how you would design a couple of disadvantages --- or even if they count as disadvantages at all. The first: the character is wanted. There's an outrageously large bounty on his head. It's believed he's caused a lot of destruction, and whole towns full of people flee in terror at the rumor that he's coming to their town. Sounds easy, right? Reputation, and Hunted? Except: nobody recognizes him. And, if they do notice he matches the description, they don't believe he's really the same person. So, what is this? A Secret Identity? Descriptive text not worth disadvantage points? Something else? The second: random chaos and destr…
