Just a quick note to let y'all know that now that Ben's finished writing The Spacer's Toolkit, he's finally had the time to post the April update of the Rules FAQ. The PDF has not yet been updated AFAIK. Please post any questions/comments in the "Company Questions" thread on this subject.

I've been reading all the posts/threads about folks working to convert their favorite book/TV show/game setting to FREd and realized that what we all really could use is one place for everyone to put their work. What I am proposing is to host such a site. The ground rules would be: 1) I will not make any decisions on the specific conversions unless I am involved in that particular project. 2) The site will acknowledge all copyrights. 3) The site will acknowlege everyone who contributed to the specific project. I've already got some design ideas I've been working out, but didn't want to take this too far without brining folks on board. What do y'all s…

Dumb question here... What's the point of Damage Resistance? I.e., what's the real difference between it and Armor? DR makes a character's PD or ED resistant. Armor is resistant PD or ED. Why would I use one instead of the other? I mean, isn't buy up a lot of PD/ED and making it resistant the same effect as buying a bunch of resistant PD/ED? Also, FREd mentions that DR can be used for Mental, Flash and other types of defenses. How does this work? E.g., what kind of mental attack would require resistant mental defense? A KA BOECV? You'd think I'd be able to figure this out myself, having played the game since 7th grade.

I've noticed that the damage reduction charts thread has become a invulnerability thread. Since I want to handle the two separately I'll ask here. (Yes I know this has been brought up ad naseum). I've considered the limited form of Desolidification and also high damage reduction (75%) only versus a given SFX, but I'd really rather see a different power altogether. My thoughts: The standard superhero campaign is 350 points. A character who wishes to be invulnerable should probably be made to spend most if not all on this power. Invulnerability *STOP* Base cost 120 points for one type (PD, ED, or Special). The special categories are men…

In some thread a while back, someone was lamenting the fact that building NPCs for HERO was time-consuming, adding a lot of work to all the other responsibilities GMs are burdened with. Then, someone else (probably Monolith) suggested that NPCs, mooks in particular, don't always have to be fully "built"; i.e., there are some key stats that you need to know, and then you can just not worry about doing all the normal accounting. This, I thought, is really good advice. In fact, it's the kind of good advice that could be part of a book filled with good advice for HERO GMs. The Ultimate GM. Does anyone else think this is a good idea? If so, what would you like to see…

I'm working on converting real weapons to Hero stats and I'm confused about a certain point. What is the rational for giving some weapons OCV bonuses and others RMod bonuses? Since OCV applies at close range, you would think that pistols (which are fairly easy to aim) would have a higher bonus that large and cumbersome heavy machine guns but HMGs get +2 while pistols get +0. Any thoughts? Aaron

I am looking for at least one person, perhaps two or three, who can assist me in the completion of the Master Lists of Limitations. The current circumstances in my life prevent me from devoting the time and effort I need to do more than add to the website once in a blue moon, and there's still too much to do on the Master Lists for that to be a viable option. I can still maintain the website... I just need assistance getting all of the unwritten limitations finished. Please respond either here or send an email to me at jack @globalguardians.com if you're interested in helping out. Thanks. Jack Butler

I'm going for something that is essentially a "damaging block." You see them all the time in the movies. An opponent throws a kick and the defender essentially attacks the limb (with either a punch or kick) instead of merely blocking it. The "joint break" maneuver from UMA comes pretty close but isn't quite it. Does anyone have a suggestion that doesn't involve creating some kind of Damage Shield? It seems that this should be doable without having to resort to a "power." Unfortunately, my brain isn't up to the challenge at the moment. Charlie

Hi, I'm a newcommer here, and discovered the Hero system a few days ago, fo I was interrested in the Terran Empire, well critized in french rpg press. I have a question that may have allready been asked, or that you'll find quite dork. I have issues with OCV/DCV. Mostly, I don't uderstand : 1. Why do they exist ? The combat skills don't work the same way than the other skills, and I find it strange. I don't understand the need to use a "TAC0" like system (ok, this is not a nice thing to say, I appologize) 2. How do you "use" your combat skills ? for 2 levels, you can do extra damages. Does it mean that you're OCV is lowered by the number…

So, if you put Find Weakness into a Multipower, when you switched that slot off, would your found weaknesses go away? Also, can you use Find Weakness in a Combined Power Attack?

OK, I am hitting a brick wall. "nowhere man" is a low level brick who is invisible unless he pays endurance and probably concentrates. He hopes he never gets knocked out while bleeding... How would the gurus write this up?

Okay, before we get started two things. One: I'm dead serious here. This post isn't a sick joke. Two: The following might offend some people. Please keep that in mind. Thank you. In Japanese folklore, the tanuki (a form of dog, here, it means a badger), is known for its immense scrotum. Said body part can be as large as 144 square feet (12' x 12' or roughly AOE: One Hex). It can use its scrotum as a drum (pounding on it), as an umbrella, a kimono (robe), or even wrap it around a man's neck and strangle him with it. I'm curious as to some opinions as how to express this in power form. I was thinking of the following powers: AOE: Hex on …

I've got a werewolf character who can be in human form, werewolf form, and any number of transitional inbetween forms. In the beastiary werewolves are built with multiform. I tend to build them with shapeshift(with the adder for a limited group of shapes to represent inbetween forms) and powers only in "hero id". Some powers can be turned on partially, while some are either all the way on, or all the way off. So my question for the hero community is this: As a GM would you allow shapeshift or multiform to be turned partially on to represent inbetween forms, or would you make the player buy an adder or advantage to get that benefit? Given that the Transfor…

Here's the situation. The bad guy, a mentalist had a 7" Area Effect Mental Entangle, works vs. ego, ect., ect. None of the players knew this, and what happened was really accidental, so I ruled in the player's favor. I'm wondering what should have been done though. One of the players who's a 'Plastic Man' type, stretched his neck nine hexes up to see over the various buildings if there were any other bad guys approaching. His body was next to the mentallist but his head/brain was out of the A.E.! Like I said I ruled in the player's favor since it was accidental, and somewhat funny, but really, how does that work?

VPP and Continuing Charges
by Guest innominatus- 18 replies

I was experimenting recently with a concept for a "super-mage" NPC, and wanted to get the opinion of other GM's on how they would handle this particular wrinkle in the rules... The character has a 60 pt. Variable Power Pool, and I was thinking about supplementing her raw abilities with a few talismans and other magic items. Then I got to reading the "Continuing Charges" section of the rules -- specifically, how once you've activated a Charge for a power in a VPP or Multipower, you could then shift your points around and the power's Charge would continue to run its course. And it occurred to me that you could build powers with a single, LONG-lasting Charge (a +2 Adv…

Been a while since I last disgusted the forums, so based on Mattingly or whoever's essay on inexistent characteristics, here's my essay on what infinite characteristics would be like. I have no idea of the point cost of each of these, so don't ask. INFINITE STR: A character with Infinite STR can deal out AS MUCH DAMAGE AS HE WANTS TO. 5d6, 20d6, 1000d6, doesn't matter. He can also lift any material object and throw it at any distance. His Leaping distance is also infinite (see Infinite Movement) INFINITE DEX: Infinite DEX means a character never fails any DEX or DEX-based skill roll, for any reason. His OCV and DCV are also infinite, which means he'll never miss…

Hello devoted herophiles. I seem to be unable to locate a limitation that I have seen before. I believe it was once listed as "Leaves behind a vulnerable physical form". Its application would be for... Using desolidifaction to simulate an astral form leaving behind a body that can be harmed In connection with Extradimensional Movement to simulate jacking into the cyber-world and leaving your physical body behind. I'm doing this last one and need to set the level of limitation. Thanks for your help.

Okay, in my PBEM game, one of the PC's shot a laser at the bad guys escape vehical, and only did 2 body (that's after defenses). He was aiming for the engine block, but got a bad roll so I determined that he hit the gas tank (where else :-p ) but only did enough damage to cause the gas tank to start spewing fuel. Here's my problem: One of the bad guys made it back to the van (is currently climibing in). One of the PC's shouted that the van was going to blow, but he won't get another action for a little bit. How long should I delay the explosion (if it happens at all) and how much damage should a full tank of gas do? I was thinking something along the lines of …

Summoning and active power cost limits
by Guest Ranma- 3 replies

I am the GM for a new group of players and we are trying to figure out what to do with the summoning power. We are looking at creating a character who can summon massive creatures but they would have so many advantages and disadvantages i dont know if it is normally legal. Its is based on yugioh dueling cards. summoning 250 point creature limited class of monsters +1/2, X4 number of beings, slavishly devoted. This is 195 active points, but no conscious control(cards must be drawn at random), and OAF Dueling deck, make it real cost of 70. We have a low powered super hero game begining. Is this power outside of the normal allowable limits. The sameple vampire listed in the…
