I'm working yet again on a probability manipulator and I've had a brainstorm...VPP 30 requires a skill roll (any skill) that turns skills into powers...so I need to tap into your collective wisdom...is this legit? how much of a lim is requires a skill roll in this aplication? I'm thinking around -1/4 and would this power give you the willies? I'm thinking Damage reduction or armor for acrobatics or breakfall , empathic mind controll for seduction or oratory maybe even HA for a "Brawling" skill....would invisable tunneling for lockpick be over the top? I'm also considering X ray vision and fully indirect invisable TK for gambling skill etc...Thanx for any insights...

I was thinking about this earlier, so I did a little bit of analysis to see how much damage X DCs (Normal) does how often. I thought this might be of somewhat-general interest, so here are some of the results. The table below shows the approximate breakover points for a given DC (where it does X damage just less than 50% of the time, Y damage just less than 60% of the time, and so forth). DCs <50% <40% <30% <20% <10% 6 21 22 23 25 26 8 28 29 31 32 34 10 35 36 38 39 42 12 42 43 45 47 49 13 45 47 49 51 53 14 49 51 52 54 57 15 52 54 56 58 61 Any comments or questi…

Okay, am I totally wack or has the site been down for a few days?? I tried to surf over here just a few minutes ago and I was still getting that java error stuff. Then I did a google search on Hero Games and of course this came up. So, on a whim I clicked on in and voila!, there was the site. I had even checked it on two different computers and two different browsers. Maybe it's just too much sun.

I just had what I thought was a cute idea. Anyone who wants to be written up, post here. Anyone who wants to take a shot at writing us up, do so and post your results. Use standard superheroes; 200 + 150, 50 max disads per category. No writing yourself up. And remember, this is all in fun! Who's in?

Okay, so according to Ultimate Vehicle, you calculate the cost of a vehicle Summon based on the total points in the vehicle, not the total points divided by five. And the +1 Amicable Advantage is mandatory. Huh? Using that method, it costs well over 100 points to summon a freakin' Ford Taurus! Does this seem a little silly to anyone else? Or does anyone seriously contend that the ability to wave your hand and make a mid-sized sedan appear is as useful as a 20+d6 Energy Blast, a 7 or 8d6 KA, a small Cosmic VPP, an "anything to anything" Transform, etc? Is this some kind of misguided attempt to prevent players from Summoning Star HERO warships, or s…

When I read the description, I felt confused. It seems ambiguous. How does Gradual Effect interact with defenses? At first, I thought that you tally up the damage until it exceeds the given defense. But then it seemed like maybe it was more like each unit of damage is separate. By that I mean that the defense needs to be exceeded by that one instance of damage for it to work. Example A 6d RKA is spread over 5 minutes, with six intervals. The attack hits a PD of 5. The attack does 2,2,2,6,3,1. Does the attack do 11 damage, or 5? I'd ask in the questions board, but I'm pretty sure that it is 11 damage. If it wasn't, then the intervals would be more clea…

According to the HERO SYSTEM Comeliness affects skills like Seduction. If 0 or lower it adds to PRESENCE attacks. Of course a 16+ Comeliness gets you dates. But I wonder if anyone out there has ever wondered what good COMELINESS does for a PC. Most refuse to pay the points for it as it will not help you get out of a death trap etc. So if at all possible post some suggestions for 'wasting' 1 or 2 points on COMELINESS. Personally I think that COMELINESS is cute [LOL] (BOO bad pun)

Characters act in phases based on their SPD. Characters who act on the same phase go in order of DEX. Characters with the same SPD and DEX roll to determine who goes first. I have seen threads on these boards which imply that characters acting simultaneously is to be avoided at all costs. What's wrong with same SPD/DEX characters acting at the same time? Would this not happen from time to time in real life?

Say I have an EB bought with AOA (cone), and I want to be able to use that EB either with the AOA advantage in use, or simply use it as a directed attack? What do you think the best way of approaching this is? (obviously I could buy it as two completely separate powers, but the costs would be prohibitive. Maybe a multipower? Is there a better way?)

Ok, I really do love the system. It is amazing. Awsome. No need to defend hero, we all know how fun it is. Now having said that there are a couple things that I hope can be addressed. Has anyone come up with a way of decreasing the curve with regard to stats and break points for character optimization? Is there somewhere I can go for Hero LIte? Specifically I am looking for 'plug-ins' along the lines of what is found in the current champions. Pre generated stats and abilities that I can mix and match to my taste without having to build it all from the ground up are what I am looking for, for more then just the Champions setting would help a great deal. …

Accurate autofire limits the penalty to -1 instead of -1 per hex. Skipover Sprayfire has the 'normal' penalty of -1 per target hex. Does this mean if both skills are used then there is only a total of -1 to OCV?

Okay. I have a skills question. There are basically two types of skills those based off characteristics and background skills which are not based off characteristics and have a standard cost. Now, I understand mechanically what the difference between the two are and I understand that background skills (namely knowledge, professional, scientific, and languages) represent knowledge the character has received over time. My question involves cost. A skill based off characteristics generally cost 3 points for the base skill and 2 points per +1 added to the skill. In general a Background skill cost 2 points for the base skill and 1 points add +1 to the skill. So…

Dispel & Summon 1 2

The character concept is a Villan that calls himself the Conjurer. Really he is a scientist that has super high tech holographic and force projection gagets that allow him to create solid holograms (ala ST holodeck). He has a summon that creates solid holograms to do his bidding, basically instant hechmen. The summon is bought with an IAF, he has six drone spheres that when activated produce an being he desires to do his bidding. The spheres are then covered by the hologram. Now how do I allow him to turn the holograms off? So he and his "henchmen" can simply disappear for a great finish. I was thinking a massive Dispel against summons, but with the Lim o…

I was wondering, how many levels of Mind Control do I need to make a victom speak exactly what I want him to speak? I'm trying to simulate the Malick trick he does with the Milimumen Rod in Yu-Gi-Oh. The thing is, of course, only Yugi knows that the victom's words are acualy Malicks (well, except for the person Mind Controled by Malick, but most of his 'victoms' are loyal brain-washed servents, except for Bandet Keith, and he had to be brought back from the dead, acording to the manga...but I disgress).

I always find rules tinkering to be a fun; and I'd like to get my two boys interested in champions, and so I'm trying to find ways to simplify the rules while changing as little as possible. (My boys are ages 9 and 13) Anyway, the thought was that instead of using the speed chart, characters simply act every X segments, where X is 12 divided by their speed. If this is not an even number, it just alternates between the two closest numbers. For instance, a speed 3 acts every 4 segments. A speed 6 acts every 2 segments. A speed 5 acts every, um, 2.4 segments; we would just have that character alternate waiting 3 then 2 segments between actions. This …

After reading JamesG's recent question about Combat Luck and Steve Long's answer, I was curious on what you all thought about it. I see combat luck applicable to a character with little or no armor. Combat Luck is the reason that Batman, Daredevil, ect., are able to remarkably not get hit by bullets. Luke Sywalker had Combat Luck, no Stormtrooper was able to hit him. I would do combat luck differently than the book does, here's my idea: The character would buy as much hardend armor as he wanted, this reprisents how potentially lucky he could be The armor would be bought with the lim 'must make a luck roll to activate'. (The book covers this, I don't know the pag…

Cybernetic as limitation

Okay, I remember this from Cyber Hero, but no longer have it- was this a -1/4 or -1/2? I think that it should be a -1/2 limitation on powers and here's my reasoning: A focus can be taken away, sure, but does not add inherent disadvantages to you personally, which cybernetics do. Magnetics, EMPs and cyberkinesis are now very dangerous to you, whereas a normal hero does not need to worry about them. It alters the type of medical care that you require, it makes you noticeably inhuman, even if hidden(a limited or regular Distinctive Feature) and it makes you detectable as a machine by any with that ability. I would suggest that the character is then affected by cyberkines…

If I'm not mistaken, a Constant attack continues to affect the target on each of the user's subsequent Phases for as long as it's maintained, without requiring a new attack roll. Okay, so far, so good. What trips me up is this: Unless I'm mistaken, this applies to Powers bought through Foci and such, as well. Thus, a SPD 1 guy aims a flamethrower (Constant attack) at a target and holds down the trigger. After taking initial damage, the target sustains further damage during each subsequent Phase 7. Later, a SPD 12 guy picks up the exact same flamehrower, aims it at the exact same target, holds down the trigger and then proceeds to dish out damage with i…

One of my would-be players is going to play a mutated Opera-singer who has this "Stun Song". This power should do the following: When the character is singing his Stun Song (this high pitched stunning sound), all beings in a radius area of effect around him are stunned (struck by stun only damage) and flashed (cannot hear) as long as he concentrates on singing. Here is how I figured this out: Stun Song: Energy Blast 2d6 (vs. ED), STUN Only (+0), Area Of Effect (8" Radius; +1 3/4) (27 Active Points); Incantations, Requires Incantations throughout (-1/2), No Range (-1/2), No Knockback (-1/4), Concentration (1/2 DCV; -1/4) Total cost: 11 Flash 2d6 (Hearing …

Long time player, first time Ref. I've recently converted some Cyberpunk adventures (Media Junkie: Take One and Final Cut) to present day HERO. The players are 75/75 non-supers (normals trying to make a name for themselves in a champions universe) and I've gotten myself all turned around trying to work out how much damage they should be throwing out (I originally just took the superhero approach and one guy was doing 8D6). Assuming 15 STR... Nunchaku: 3D6 HA w/STR Min 7 = 4 1/2 D6 damage right? = 6D6 w/Martial Strike? Katana: 1 1/2 D6 HKA w/STR Min 12 (two hands) or 14 (one handed) = 1 1/2 D6 one handed, 2D6 two handed (w/STR only) = 2D6…

How do you represent submission holds in HERO? I mean, if you put someone in a grab, they just go unconscious. How would you represent making someone tap out from the pain/exhaustion?

I was thinking about building a character that has some powers that take considerable energy to get started, but that he can use continuously from then on. Under the description of Increased END from FREd, it says, "Sometimes a character wants to have an Increased END Cost for only some uses of a power...In this situation, the value of the Limitation is reduced." They give three levels, Uncommon, Common, and Very Common, resulting in a 1/4 reduction, a 1/2 reduction, and 1 reduction in the level of limitation. I was thinking that as a result of the "Only Costs END to Start", the Increased END Cost would suffer either a 1/2 or 1 reduction in value, probably the 1 (t…

Save or Die? 1 2

Here's the Power I want: Target gets hit with Power. Target succeeds with a CON Roll, no effect. CON Roll fails, target instantly drops dead regardless of its Characteristics, Powers, defenses, etc. Can it be done? How about in under 100 AP? Really, I love HERO, but the seeming inability to just make things DIE (or turn to stone or whatever) without it mattering if they're Doctor Destroyer or Doctor Quinn: Medicine Woman is slightly irksome to me. Other games can do "save or die" abilities just fine. Can HERO?
