Looking at my copy of Ultimate Vehicle, I see the writeup for vehicles with ejector seats. My problem is this: The ejector seats are built as Telekinesis that affects a whole object "only to throw object straight up." Shouldn't there be some sort of, oh, I don't know...PARACHUTE involved? Seems to me that an ejector seat in a fighter jet that just shot the pilot up out of the cockpit with no provision for making sure he reached the ground without splatting would be silly to say the least! Sure, I guess you could add the parachute write-up from FREd, but the pre-made vehicles with ejector seats don't opt to. What's the point of this feature as writte…

I seem to recall an old super-power for Champions called Power Destruction, but I can't remember how it was written up or how much it cost. Is there anyone online right now who could answer these questions for me? Space Cadet

Are there any provisions for being worse at various Skills, Maneuvers, and such than the rulebook assumes? It sounds ridiculous, but I'm curious. For example, can I buy a skill at less than -8? Let's say I buy PS: Gardening at -8. But what if my character concept is a really massively incompetent gardener and I would prefer a roll of -6, -5 or even less? Similarly, what if I want my guy to be okay with other attacks, but really bad with Grabs. Maybe -4 OCV or more, in addition to any other penalties. Or -2 with all firearms, or whatever. There are rules for Negative Skill Levels, but they seem to actually cost points instead of saving them because of t…

Hardened PD/Resistent Defense

I am building a character that has elevated PD and Damage Resistance. I am wanting to buy Hardened, to toughen him up. Do I need to buy it for both defenses, or will hardened on just the PD stop AP KA's? Maybe I should just not even split hairs and buy armor, defined as tough skin, and buy the Hardened on that? But in the end, doesn't it equal the same? But not really, because if I buy hardened on PD, don't I have to buy it for the total amount of PD, whereas, if I buy it for armor, I can just purchase it for the portion that is in addition to my base PD. In that case, wouldn't it be possible to buy just a few points of armor to counteract an AP at…

Hello, Steve. I hope life is treating you well on balance. The description of the AVLD Advantage says that it can be bought as +3/4 rather than +1 1/2 if the defense it applies to is "simply a limited form of the Power's standard defense." (5E p. 161) I'm trying to establish some benchmarks for what that "limited form" could be, and could use some informed opinions to help me decide. Some examples I had in mind include: 1) Killing Attack vs. Armor (not other resistant defenses); 2) Killing Attack vs. Hardened defenses; 3) Normal Damage attack vs. "innate" defenses (not through Foci, magic spells or technological implants). I understand that campaig…

A PC in my Terran Empire/Star Hero game is a Fex. For those less familiar with the TE setting, Fex are Standard Cat-like Humanoid Aliens, with little 1/2d6 HKA claws. She'd like to develop a martial art (which we're referring to as Fex Fu :-)) but I'm not sure if there are any special rules I need to be aware of regarding the relationship between a built-in HKA and martial arts. Can anyone help clarify this for me? jk

I really should know this, and I don't feel like digging for the answer. When you buy a computer for a vehicle, do you divide it's total cost by five for being a computer, place it in your vehicle's total cost, and divide by five again? Or do you simply put the computer's total cost in with the vehicle, and divide it all by five? BlueBuddha

Just wanted to remind us all of Rule #6: "If two powers (or other game elements) are equally valid ways to create a particular ability, you must use the more expensive of the two." Actually, all 8 rules are a good read from time to time. Page 348. Aroooo (okay, you can flame me now...)

Hi, i'm trying to get psyched up to GM for the first time, so i'm trying to get some baddies built with interesting abilities. My current idea is a bunch of little robots, each with taser-like darts that can conduct an electircal charge to the target, but only if another little guy has also hit that target. Basically, they can only discharge if the circuit between two bots is closed. It'd be NND vs not being conductive, or having some amount of Power Defense, etc. I was thinking that Trigger would be the ticket, but that requires that the hit roll be made when the trigger event occurs, not when the trigger is set up. I'd like to be able to roll to hit (simulating…

Hi All, Reading the 6th edition thread and desided to start a new thread: It seems that everyone hates the new DS rules from 5th, and I am sure most have a house rule for it, so I perpose a sharing of house rules to see what everyone else is doing My Rules for DS: A +1/2 Modifier, subject to attack powers, if the attack power is ranged it looses it's range component, If Str adds you loose as well If applied to a mental power and is only suppose to activate when a mental power is used against the character then costing stays the same It uses the AF method of an additional +1 on any abusive powers, INCLUDING mental powers that will be activated…

Inspired by the latest "how to do time stopping" thread... Ladies and gentlemen, my next Champions character! ...Okay, not really, but I wanted to see the fun I could have with 350 points or less. "Time Dude" Characteristics: STR: 10 DEX: 40 CON: 10 BODY: 10 INT: 10 EGO: 10 PRE: 10 COM: 10 PD: 17 ED: 17 SPD: 12 REC: 4 END: 20 STUN: 20 Running: 6"/12" Swimming: 2"/4" Leaping: 2"/4" Total Characteristics Cost: 190 Powers: Time Freeze: Extra-Dimensional Movement (to outside the timestream, where the user is the only thing not frozen in time), Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2) (60 Active Points), Tot…

Need some more tricky Power-building help. 1. Voodoo doll. Classic sympathetic magic where damaging or destroying some of the target's personal effects automatically deals damage to the target in turn. 2. A neat little spell from the Unknown Armies RPG. Caster specifies a target known to him that he wishes to communicate a short message to. The next time the target looks at a television screen, he (and only he) sees and hears the caster reciting the message. 3. Melee deflection/reflection. Knocking aside HTH attacks so that they affect other targets in range, or even the attackers themselves. As usual, Active and Real Point costs not wildly in excess o…

I found the following online. Remember the Legion of Doom? Remember the "Banded together" opening line at the start of the show? Well check this out: Luthor: Banded together from remote galaxies we are thirteen... Captain Cold: Luthor what are you talking about? Luthor: Our sinister places of origin! Captain Cold: Yeah, I caught that genius. I meant what's with the "Remote Galaxies" shit? I'm from North Dakota. Toyman: Hey, me too. Giganta: My folks are from Vermont, but we moved around alot. Scarecrow: I lived in Canada after I got out of college. Gorilla Grodd: Gorilla City *Sluuuurp* is pretty fucked up, but it's in Africa, not another galaxy. …

Bestiary skeletons tormenting me.
by Guest Green Giant- 4 replies

Perhaps I am just completely missing the obvious, but my slovenly mind is not computing the point totals on the skeleton on the 5th Bestiary page 123. Specifically the points paid for PD/ED in the characteristics section along with the Damage Resistance and limited undead PD in the powers section of the entry. Am I just being simple? It appears that Damage resistance is paid for twice, one on the characteristic entry and again in the powers section. And where do the point costs come from for the limited PD that protects against piercing and slashing attacks? - the confused Giant

I've written a small application where the GM can enter characters names, dexterities, and speeds. The app then has a combat mode whereby it cycles through the various segments and displays each character that goes on the given phase (in the order of their action). I was thinking of expanding this application to be more useful (on the whole) for a Hero game GM. Does anyone have any ideas about what they would want to see in such an app? Things that save the GM time probably top on the list... Paul PS: I have this app running on my Compaq IPAQ which makes a very nice sized GMing companion

I hadn't had much exposure to pre-5th Edition HERO prior to thsi last week, where I ran across an excellent-condition copy of Champions 4th at a used bookstore for only $6.00. I picked it up, of course, and by the time I was done reading it, I was amazed! More specifically, I was amazed at how dreadfully written and organized the whole book was when compared to HERO 5th. The contrast is striking. The Powers had fewer useful applications (no "Only To Protect Against X" Desolidification, for example), and their more fuzzy interactions were tricky to adjucate at best. The lack of sample Powers makes the whole package vastly less user-friendly. Not to mention i…

In our game our GM limits the speed to 5. Four years ago when I first started with this group, I built a Shape Changer semi-brick with a speed of four. I quickly learned my mistake when everyone else was going so much more that i was. Now I know that it really wasn't that much more, each player got only one extra segment than i did, but considering bad guys (who were mostly speed 5) and that there were 4 other players, There were usually 10 ppl doing taking thier turns before i got a chance to do anything at times. Since then, I've always made sure my characters have had a speed of 5. The reason I bring this up is becasue a discussion came up in our group about rasing…

What kind of unusual powers have people created, either to fit a concept or just to do something different? The powers don't have to be particularly useful in combat (or particularly useful, even). My favorite to date is an Entangle, Does Knockback... for no readily apparent reason... it just struck me as funny when I wrote it... Charlie
