Hello, I am looking to write up an exploding tag similar to what is used in the anime 'Naruto'. It basically is a small paper tag which will explode. It is often attached to a thrown dagger so it will explode next to a person. I believe I have the basics of it as below (though rough, has the key elements): Exploding Tag: Energy Blast 4d6, Explosion (+1/2) (30 Active Points); 4 Charges (-1), OIF (-1/2), Linked (Dagger; -1/4) My question: it being AOE and the dagger being targeted, how does one determine the location of the dagger (and center of explosion) on a miss? A comon tatic would be to leap in the air and throw it down at a person so even with a mis…

I'm thinking about running a Ninja Hero campaign based on the old Eastman and Laird black and white TMNT comics. Has anybody done this type of campaign before? Any info would be great, thanks.

OK, who else wants to run something like this?

I found this a bit off topic for the background thread, yet I couldn't resist myself for adding onto this sub-thread (so I created this new thread). How do you create your NPCs?

As I am periodically wont, I've returned to the notion of running a Cthulhu game. This time I'm pondering PBEM with its more literary bent. Naturally I'll be using Hero, though the nature of the beast will make combat issues less particular. So I've been rereading Lovecraft to distill a tone and flavor for the campaign. As always my goal is to use Lovecraft as the model, as opposed to the mass of subsequent "mythos" lore, or worse, the Chaosium "Call of Cthulhu" lore. My question to you is, what would you list as the overriding components of Lovecraft's horror? How would you separate them from the tropes that have become common elements in "Cthulhu games?" And which …

Here are a couple of campaign ideas I'm thinking about running some time in the next year. Some of you might think they belong on one or another genre-specific board, but I don't see them (and don't want to see them) as fitting any particular genre. I would be interested in any friendly comments or suggestions any of you might have. I have two different main ideas, with variants that partially overlap. I'm further along on my thoughts on the second, and am currently more enthusiastic about it, but the first might appeal to my players more (their feedback is currently trickling in), and I can almost certainly get psyched up for it. 1. I have a kind of nostalg…

During the last month, I started and ran a solo Golden Age campaign. I'd like to share a few thoughts and ask for some views and opinions. First off, at the request of my player, though it was set in WWII, it for the most part avoided the "Golly gee whiz!!"-type of stuff most people seem to associate with the Golden Age comics. Instead, it being war, the heroes carried guns or had powers that allowed them the option of lethal force. Though there was some of the "edge-of-silliness" patriotism, that's about the only concession to the "Golly gee whiz!!" end of things. The campaign is set in Britain, starting a few months before the U.S. joined the war. That doesn't…

I'm thinking of running a Hero System demo based on the old pulp serials - Sort of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Thing is, I've only ever run Hero as Supers. Now I think I understand the genera enough to lay out the characters - The two-fisted Adventurer, the brainy Professor, the British Big Game Hunter, the beautiful Neice, etc. My question is point levels. 50/50? 75/75? I'm thinking 50/50, but what have you guys run?

Note: Links in this post go to E-Bay and Amazon. I'm also cross-posting to the Star Hero forum. Finally got a copy of Ringworld off of E-Bay and now I want to use it for a game, however, not using the Basic Role-Playing (BRP) system. I’ve been a Hero system fan for years and years. I thought I might do something a little different and combine the Ringworld with the following settings/elements: Stargate SG1 – If the “creators†can create the ringworld, I’m sure they can create a stargate system as well. Lords of Madness – I’ve always enjoyed the Illithid/Mind Flayers, Aboleths, Neogi and Beholders. And, I dig the whole Aberrations/Far Realm…

HIGHLANDER HERO 5th Edition Rules written by Carlos Ortiz Author’s Note: Highlander is the property of Davis/Panzer Productions, Inc. All references to the characters from the movies and television series are used without permission. The following work is merely my homage to my favorite genre. – CO2 INTRODUCTION Immortals are men and women (sometimes children) who cannot die except through decapitation. They live for centuries without aging or suffering from physical illness, although they may still be afflicted with insanity or other emotional maladies. If these people are injured or even “killed,†they regenerate quickly. No one is s…

You take a character from a children's book and make a character based off of it. Of course you horribly warp it first. Here's the real challenge the campaign is a more serious, darker world then normal and your characters need to fit in. I made a character based off Clifford the Big Red Dog. My version had him being the son of Cerberus and had him expelled from hell and onto Earth by his father to save him from his father's enemies. He had fire based powers as a person and when he changed to his dog form (looked nothing like the real Clifford other then being big and mainly red) he was very strong, very fast, and capable of summoning a pack of hell hounds to serve h…

i'm trying to assemble a one-shot for a con featuring movie characters from the late 70's and early 80's, fighting vampires. I'm trying to pick characters who are a little tounge-in-cheek. So far I've decided on Philo Beddoe and Clyde from Every Which Way But Loose, Jack Burton from Big Trouble in Little China, and possibly the Bandit from Smokey and the Bandit. Any Ideas for me? And where can I find an orangatang figure?

I'm using "Ch'i Energy Gems" in my Cyber Ninja Pirates game and a player mentioned Qi was the appropriate spelling - or was that Ki? Anyway, that's the question, and I know some of you know the language and know the transliteration well, so figured I'd throw this out and hope for a reasonably authoritative consensus...

There's No "REAL HORROR" in a Horror RPG setting...is there? Part of the attraction of "horror", is the adreneline rush one gets from "being scared". Most horror plays on the basic fears and paranoias that we all have as "normal neurotics" in this crazy, mixed-up world. This doesn't translate well in RPGs. Most gamers look at the "horror" as just another big beastie that they MUST somehow destroy. It's just that simple. There's no "real horror" in RPGs. The reason I think is because most RPGs are broken down into "mathematical equations"...and what gamer is afraid of the horror that is The Mathematics Beast from planet Algebra IV! Well no gamer is...re…

Horror Setting: Eidolon
by Guest Black Lotus- 11 replies

Hmm. I'm designing a new setting for the Horror genre. All I can tell you at this point is that it is (tentatively) called Eidolon, it is set in modern times, there will be an organization in the setting that is very much a schattenjaeger (demon hunter) type of thing, and that reality is not always as it seems. Demons, phantoms (which is what "eidolon" means -- phantom), and other, more mysterious evil forces run rampant, though of course modern society chooses not to notice such things. Some of my ideas for Eidolon fit genre stereotypes, while others do not. I would like to ask you all to criticize the attached title for Eidolon -- does it look okay? How could…

Hi everybody. (no "hi, Doctor Nick", jokes, please). I just want to bounce some ideas off the community at large here, for a campaign setting that I'm writing up. To that end, I just kinda want some input, and a fairly generous helping of "directional guidance" if my ideas seem to derail one another. You see, I'm trying to make a campaign that is both a Western, and a Steampunk game. Generally, they're pretty easy to mix together, since the concept of "Steam powered technology that, while uncommon, does exist" can fit pretty easily into a Western game. The catch here is that I want to incorporate other ideas, as well. Stuff like very low level magic (no spells…

Yesterday I had this idea about a cavalry regiment for a fictional empire. It would be loosely based on the Household Cavalry with a few changes. The ranks will be the same as the ones presented in the link, along with a few extinct titles such as Captain Lieutenant and Colonel Commandant. I'm thinking of calling this regiment The Imperial Lancers. They are often colloquially (and sometimes disparagingly) called the Red Shanks, after the scarlet pants worn by the soldiers. Yes, I know it's a fashion faux-pas these days, but some units actually did wear red pants. Aside from that, soldiers wear black coats with scarlet cuffs and collars. Officers' coats include epaul…

I had alot of players for this game, I split them into two groups running in similar but slightly variant settings, Here's the first part of the second group. Again, adult language and situations. Its dawn and a storm looms on the horizon. Dark thunderheads billow and churn in the distance, lightening flashing in ominous silence among them. It’s been 3 days since you've seen any people. Any living people anyway. There are plenty of bodies. People killed in the rioting, or that actually succumbed to the Flu...or "them" and died in the wreck clogged streets. The charnel smell of fire and rotting flesh hangs faintly in the air, tainting everything you smell or tas…

Gantz Hero

In the following series of posts I will present my adaptation of the anime and manga Gantz into Hero System. I mentioned this project briefly in the “Your ‘2005’ Pet Gaming Project†thread. Well here is Gantz Hero and I have just about finished. The only thing left to do is maybe create a few of the characters from the anime. I might even get around to writing up an alien or two if I can find the time. Gantz – Disclaimers WARNING 1: I highly recommend Gantz, both the anime and the manga, however… The Gantz anime is rated TV-MA due to graphic violence and nudity. The manga is even more graphic than the anime. It is science fiction based in modern Tokyo…

Northwestern University has over 300 posters from World War II up on the web -- the vast majority American, but I think I saw a few Canadian as well. http://www.library.northwestern.edu/govpub/collections/wwii-posters/ There's also a few other paper items scanned in, such as a sheet of sugar allowance coupons (for home canning) and a certificate to buy rubber shoes.

SJG is in the process of publsihing books based on two webcomics 9or at least partial webcomics), the Fogio's Girl Genius and Andy Weir's bizarre Casey & Andy. Both are 4th Edition books. I was wondering about HERO conversions. I'm pretty sure msot of us are familair with Girl Genius, a saga of mad science run amok that would not only make a smashing RPG but would also be a killer OVA series. (I want to do the voice of the Baron!) Casey & Andy is a bit more obscure. it's much more a gag series than a story series such as Girl Genius. But it is brilliant in its own way, mainly for the supporting cast. It's been a long time since I've seen a webcomic chara…
