I'm going a bit crazy here. I know I've seen a talent which was essentially +X Str, only for Bow Str Minimum. But I can't see it anywhere in the books. Anyone know what I'm thinking of and where it came from?

I was thinking of helping a player design a 'Sword Tricks' style multipower, using talents like Follow-Through and Whirlwind Attack. The spell casters already use Multipowers to buy spells, so it doesn't seem too problematic to allow a warrior to buy their tricks that way. Yet I can't think of any example characters built in this fashion. Is this a bad idea or is there some reason not to do it that I'm missing?

I mentioned this in the Share Your Magic System thread, but I've been plugging away at a document for Myth Adventures in Fantasy Hero. I actually ran a game of this, long ago. I'd love to have suggestions, ideas, feedback, and so forth. Is there anything you'd like to see in it? More of something? Less of something? Suggestions for how to do (thing)?

I just saw in the HERO News on this site a new fantasy setting for Fantasy Hero, Evermist, but I haven't heard anything about it. Someone wants to comments on contents? Does the book contain art or is it mainly text? What is the big hook?

Outside the harbour of Quardise the water began to heave. Soon a figure of a human male appeared to be rising from the waves. It rose to tower over the city. Soon its head was in the clouds and it loomed over the city. Then the image slowly disappeared. When sailors reach the area he rose from, they found a small island, newly formed with a freshwater spring on one side of the island. The plains of Rashmari has a part that they chase all non Rashmiri away. It has a number of metal shards sprouting from the earth, shards from a weapon of a god, that was destroyed in battle. The Rashmiri consider the place sacred, and mine the shards from time to time to m…

Sometimes I think that the skill list in Hero is waaaaaaay to large. It's clearly the creation of a multitude of additions and genre books adding new material over the years. If you were going to cut the skill list to somewhere around 12-20 total skills, what would you cut it down to? I think the list from 4th Edition D&D would be a good start as one that covers most 'adventuring' skills. If you absolutely needed specialised skills, you could always buy levels with limitations. Obviously, CSL and Skill Levels would be added to this list, as well as Penalty skill levels. Acrobatics Arcana Athletics Bluff Diploma…

Having wrapped up our Pathfinder campaign I convinced the players to try a Pen and Paper play through of Pillars of Eternity I using HERO system and the Pillars of Eternity 2 class advancement schemes. In our last campaign I hadn't restricted spells to per/day or per/long-rest casting and as a result - over time - the characters felt very much like Fantasy super-heroes instead of classic D&D characters. This time we're using a House Rule of all spells and class special abilities being restricted with per-fight charges. We've tossed Multipower to the wind as it was universally agreed (at our table of 5) that the discounting was too good and lea…

So, usually cantrip like effects are handled via a power skill roll. But what if your magic form doesn't have a power skill? In my current game, there are three main forms of magic: Arcane, Divine, and Tryshallan (elven-which is an innate sort of mix of the two). Arcane and Divine require skill rolls but Elf magic, being innate, does not. However, thematically, of the three forms the elven magic ought to have them. However, there is little use in a Power skill when that form of magic is expressly forbidden from taking RSR. Any thoughts on how to handle this pickle?

Something I'm working on for an Eberron HERO game; trying to come up with unique combinations of modifiers to differentiate the various sorts of powers/magic/psionics/etc. in the setting. I'm not overly worried about cleaving to a D&D mechanical feel (I'll be using the standard FH grimoires for spells rather than doing the Vancian stuff). So far, my thoughts are: Standard wizardry draws on Mana (a new stat the 4e Fantasy Hero Companion 2 created). 5e used Endurance Reserves for this purpose. Typically require Gestures, Incantations, Focus, Skill Roll (Magic skill based on INT) Psionics draws on personal Endurance. Typically require Concentration and…

Have you ever done anything with law in your Fantasy Hero games? We've all had the PCs thrown in a cell before, haven't we? Have you ever had them ask for a lawyer once they were in there? What did you do? Have you ever had them ask for a lawyer when they weren't being thrown in a cell? Have you ever had any PC lawyers, or at least PCs with PS: Law, or KS: Law, or similar? If so, how did it go? Because I think most of the time we just assume that every polity is some autocracy where whoever's in charge can just have anyone clapped in irons if they want. How about bodies of law, like how IRL we have Engl…

I don’t really grok paying for ‘magic items’ in a Fantasy Hero game. I get it in a Superheroic one, but in a Heroic level one, it just doesn’t make any sense to me. In most games, items are a reward, and while yes, unlimited items can be problematic in any system, typically it’s not an issue. I get that in Hero it's points that build your character, but when you have no choice in what gear you find, how do you manage it? Do players spend 4-6 scenarios saving xp and not improving only to hope for an item that they buy and can still lose? That's just never set well with me as a game mechanic. The idea that Bob the fighter might want a swo…

Arcane Magic Arcane Magic was affected the most by the Sundering. Gone are the heady days of earth shaking spells and now the wizarding community scrambles in the dust for the scraps of what was lost. The old ways no longer work, but lesser versions of their power have been reversed engineered, primarily by Tryshallans. Schools of magic have arisen, each touting their own form of magic (though most magicians practice magic from multiple schools). As END is typically ignored in this campaign, all spell caster must purchase an END reserve. They cannot start with more than 30 END and the Recovery must be every 5 minutes or worse on the tim…

First up, I'm just sharing some thoughts, looking to start a conversation. Feel free to disagree with me. Feel free to give vent to your own frustrations. In responding to a post in another thread I got to thinking about world designing, specifically kitchen sink worlds vs. worlds more closely tailored to a given style. Pathfinder's Golarion is a kitchen sink world. It is a conscious attempt to mix every style of fantasy in the one game world, thereby giving it broader sales appeal. Valdorian Age and Tuala Morna are good examples of more tailored settings. Me, I dislike kitchen sink worlds. The clashing of genres bugs me. I find it very hard to come …

What's your favourite edition to use for FH, and why? I have mostly used fifth for my FH campaigns, though I ran a short one in Sixth. I think 5th is my comfort zone but I am wondering if I should try sixth especially since I have Complete Fantasy now.

For faster combat, I am considering just using X1 Body and X3 Stun for killing attacks instead of using Hit Locations. What pitfalls have I not considered in this approach?

With the proliferation of various levels and types of magic that exist in different fantasy stories these days, I got wondering what stories exist in fantasy that possess absolutely no magic in any form. While GoT may have started off this way, magic did eventually appear both in the books and show, taking it out of the offering. I am looking for books that possess absolutely no magic from the start to the end, regardless if it is a solo or series. There can be references to higher beings, alchemical works (since that is more science than magic), or rumors of great deeds done in ancient time that has been lost. In any case, various magic users will need to rely upon trick…

my group is using the fantasy 5e supplement, we're having a ton of fun so far. Were going to be doing some mass combat soon so i wanted to see if anyone else has any experience with the rules and or can possibly clarify some things. ive ran a mock combat using the rules, i feel they're encompassing enough, move smoothly, and are logical so please don't try to convince me to use different rules or run a mass combat theatrically via smaller battles. i just want some community input, see if im glancing over something. Under "fighting" then "attacking individuals" its stated that a unit cannot attack an individual character. However under …

It was recommended that END could be ignored by non casters. What are some ramifications if this rule is used? Do weapons swing at full Str the whole time? Can you still push?

I decided to share some of my Rogues Gallery Articles, starting with my Convention bad Guys, or my Trademarked Therapods, The Jaggiri. Sometime around 1986. Pete Shafer and I did prep work to run at a convention, when Origins was at The los Angeles Airport Hilton, that year. After running some Champions, but more often Fantasy Hero, I decided to rune Fantasy Hero, with Pete Shafer as Co-GM for a table of around 14-15 people. The game was full of shady characters, and a fairly deadly swamp (with some novel mechanics), but the climax of the adventure was running into these guys. I kind of disliked elves, but these kind of fell into that. Ancient Civilization with a fair…

I am reading a series by Jennifer Estep and she has an interesting magic system. People are born with their powers and can seem to shift in different generations. Magiers are the most powerful. They control a force like electricity, fire, weather and such. Big effects are their stock in trade. Morph can shift into a second more powerful shape. They are known by a living tattoo that manifest on their necks or arm. This tattoo will wink and gesture to others and is always an indication of their forms. So far she has Ogre and Dragon forms. Masters are like Magiers, but work on physical materials. Examples she has are gemstones, ro…

hello everyone, I would like to know if GM here have tried for their fantasy campaign the mystery damage rule. That is, the GM calculates the Stun and Body damage but does not tell the players. Rather, it is a narrative description of what the player is going through. If you tried it how did it go? Steph
