So I am past the creative part of building my intro/teaching game and have begun to actually use that abacus and stat out all the NPC's and encounters. Bring the lazy cuss I am I have been grabbing as many of them I can from the 5th Ed books (bonus points if they are in HD files). But count me amazed when I cannot find any generic guards, city watch or anything. Am I blind? Did I miss something? Where are the Fantasy Hero henchmen and "normal" NPC's?

I'm trying to build a Dancing Shield; a physical object that can be snagged out of the air with difficulty (OIF) but otherwise hovers around the owner and serves as additional defense. It acts like a regular shield, but you don't have to waggle it around. There is a magic item called Soaring Shield (5e Enchanted Items 146). Game Information: Force Field (10 PD/10 ED); 0 END (+½) (30 Active Points); Activation Roll 14- (-½), OAF (-1), Incantations (-¼), Independent (-2) (total cost: 6 points) plus +4 DCV (20 Active Points); Activation Roll 14- (-½), OAF (-1), Incantations (-¼), Independent (-2), Linked (Force Field; -¼) (total cost: 4 points). Total cost:…

The last time I ran a game in Hero was around 2002, maybe 2003. The last time I played Hero was around the same time. A few years ago, I fell in with a group of people I met on Second Life, that wanted to play RPGs, while I was still in Los Angeles. So I have been very happy being a player, with a fairly international group. We started with Fudge, but I wasn't much of a fan, But we played D&D 5e, after that. and most recently we are playing Traveller. Welllll......The GM doesn't want to be a forever GM, so he threw me to the wolves and fingered me to run the next campaign, and if I was going to keep talking about Hero, that I needed to back up those statement…

So I want to use a RSR magic system, but I want the Roll to not affect the spell, it goes off, but the End Battery. In essence the Roll is to see if you have harnessed the energy correctly. Make the roll and end usage is normal. Fail the roll and end usage goes up. First- is this a Lim on the Spell or the End Battery? Second- Do I make it as a Side Effect (3d6 to End Battery) or a more sliding scale based on how much it failed by? Third- Are there any other considerations I am not accounting for?

So I've been reading a lot of Lit-Rpg watching a load of Isekai anime and found my self thinking about what weapons would be carried by Dungeon Delvers. The idea that standard medieval arms would be used seems silly because weapons are always adapted to the environment they are used in. Bearing that in mind what are the key features of a dungeon. * Variable terrain you're unlikely to be fighting in a single type of space from narrow to wide open caverns water heights flexibility is key. *Utility a weapon that only does one thing is just extra weight in situations where it isn't useable. Attacks can come from any direction dungeons are 3 …

As an intellectual exercise I will plan out how I would set up a Fantasy Hero campaign. I dusted off an old ICE module called Star crown Empire, and plan on enlarging the continent and adding more cultures ( Also no elves or dwarves, there are enough human cultures that you SHOULD be able to make a PC). Now I am a sincere believer in NOT reinventing the wheel, and so when it comes to Magic Systems I want something plug and play and not too complex. So off to Killer Shrike I go. After poring over many a dusty tome and lost scroll... yeah whatever... I have some contenders for what I wish to include. In the more "civilized" areas: Metier Link: …

Just the images and a little bit of background now. Will post the full character and HD file when I get it done today or tomorrow. This is an Old (and I mean OLD) D&D (Basic/Expert) character that was created in the mid-1980s when the Gazetteers for Mystara started coming. She was originally from the Heldann Freeholds until her family was slaughtered by the Heldannic Knights. She was saved by her fathers friends (that included some old characters from previous games). The game (and character) lasted for roughly 10 years until we had to fold it up and get grown up jobs and responsibility. Her and the other characters have always been a fall back…

I was looking at an old copy of ICE’s Star Crown Empire as part of their Shadow World Series. Stands up well but there are a few things I would change, like Human only (really drive home the fact that elves and dwarves are niche peoples), get rid of the Gap Swamp (the explosion that destroyed 200 Km squared of a mountain range never happened), maybe make the continent a little larger and give a surrounding island archepeligo. Populate the desert area a bit more (6000 years and no plant succession? Also why no rivers in the desert/grassland regions?) So far not too bad. Now the part that sets my teeth on edge and makes me realize my younger self was a bit of…

So I am working on an encounter map and wanted to try out something for making settings with variable cover (trees, brush, etc.) easier to use. In the past a lot of questions about what sections of a tree provide cover or what kind of cover, have come up. See below for my WIP, this should illustrate what I am trying for. Thoughts and feedback appreciated. Hrm. Going to have to post links, not enough room for the images to attach. You'll need to click in and zoom a couple times on the second image to see the tree trunks, this map will be split into 4 pieces for Roll20. The greenery remaining in the second image is smaller trees or brush that would still provide…

1- I know the rule of coordinating attacks to combine stun damage. You would let a player use multiple attack maneuver to create the same effect ? Combine the stun damage from is multiple attack ? 2- Did you use and track the endurance point in a heroic fantasy setting ? Steph

Another opinion question for how to do something. I am working on a spell for water mages to cause water to appear in a vessel that they have prepared for the purpose. Basically, after they dowse to find water, if it is within a certain range they can have it seep through the ground, porous rock, etc. and fill the container. Transform is a go to on things like this, so it could be used. TK only versus water could work. This might be a broader spell eventually anyway. Tunnelling, UAA, Invisible Power Effects could work, although that's more than a bit dodgy. Teleport, see above for tunneling. For transform, I am going to have to spec…

In games where all spell casting (combat and non-combat spells) require a skill roll, do you (as a GM) apply the "Combat Conditions" skill roll modifiers (-1 to -3) to the Player's Magic skill rolls during combat? If not, and I assume most people will say no (I never have in many years of Gm'ing, but have been re-reading the skill book lately and this question came to mind) it basically means they get the "Combat Ready" Talent for free for their magical skills. Is this unfair to other Player's who want to use some skills during combat who have to take the modifier or purchased the talent? Does it make the RSR Limitation not as limiting for …

This is for a fantasy setting in which magic is demonstrably real and potent and it's possible to perform spells and rituals to summon specific entities (monsters, demons, lesser deities, etc.). In many cities in the setting, there's a strict prohibition against summoning potentially dangerous entities within city limits. Breaking this law typically has a minimum penalty of either a year confined to the dungeon at the local lord's castle or a fine of 100 gold coins. Naturally, you'd also be on the hook for any property damage, injuries, or deaths the aforementioned entity causes if it goes on a rampage. The local lord reserves the right to grant onetime emergency exemptio…

How do you handle interrupting zero phase actions in your game? Activating a non-attack power is a zero phase action. If said power has Gestures or Incantations (both of which stop the power from activating if the user takes damage or is affected by an attack or MCV roll), there would seem to be a window of time to interrupt them. Do you limit this to someone who acts on the same Dex or who has a held phase and can act on that dex? Or is there some other method that you use? I also posted this in the rules forum, but I am curious how others handle it today. - E

How can I put this delicacy... How would you build a spell, which in high levels would protect everyone in an area from pregnancy? Such spells are common place in the various red light districts in the Interspecies Reviewers universe. The legal prostitutes in that world clame to be descendants of succubus (even the male ones) and can suck mana out of a willing subject via sex. (It is kinda harmless unless your actually having sex with true succubus, which will be lethal because they just don't stop till ALL the mana is out of the john and into them).

I am running a Fantasy jungle and savannah campaign and was wondering if you have any thoughts, ideas, monsters or anything you learned from a similar campaign. I found this neat booklet called Melvin's Minute Monsterium: Jungles and Savannas, its for DnD, but has some great information. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not really sure how profitable begging could be in your typical fantasy city. But it did occur to me that if there was more than one person who was begging, that it would likely bring in more money. How would you build a spell to summon an army of beggars who were really effective at what they do (number of beggars, stats, skills, talents, perhaps a subtle Mind Control)? Say enough to work a city of 20,000-30,000 efficiently but not so many that the town seems so overrun with beggars that people would become even more reluctant to give. Since the point is to actually turn a profit, the beggars would look like real flesh and blood people but wou…

I have taken your advice on this forum after playing for a year plus and understanding the game and power creep more. Here are the limitations I am going to put on my campaign to keep it manageable and not have the "arms race" OCV, DCV, OMCV, DMCV= 6 CAP DC= 6 CAP Skill Cap=13 Armor Tiring Rules=Home Brew Magic system will be the Fantasy Codex rules PD, ED, rPD, rED= 8 cap (is this too high)? I have one question, with these caps do you still allow purchasing of maneuvers from fighting styles and martial arts which pushes it beyond the cap or not? Any more insight as to rabbit holes and traps I need to watch ou…

Hello everyone. In your fantasy games, do you feature plain real-life names such as James, Pierre, Yusuf, Anne, Sophia, Mei and the like? If you do, how do you determine the rough percentage of NPCs that sound "ordinary"? Is there a rhyme or reason...a method to your madness? Come to think of it, "Albert" may very well be the exotic individual on a world with Aragorn, Drizzt and Matrim .
