I was watching a drone racing competition on TV and decided it had a place in my science fiction society. After all, people in the future will need entertainment like we do today. And it looks futuristic, especially with all the trappings. Despite movies like Rollerball and Running Man, I don't see a lot of ultraviolent sports in my future society, although combat sports will still be around. Maybe robot combat will be a popular alternative, as will virtual reality combat, like the old BattleTech Centers in the 1990s. Laser tag is still around, even though it's past its heyday. Of course, there's more to entertainment than sports. …

To those of you open to augmentation/replacements, is there a limit to the kind of cybernetic or bioengineered "part" you'd accept? Do you mind looking markedly other than human, or do you want to look as you are now? Would you mind anything that is connected to your brain/nervous system, or are you a strictly "normal consciousness" kind of person?

I just eat up anything that has the creatures from the Alien saga in it. I've built and rebuilt the species in the HERO system every time a new edition came out. But, I am still unsatisfied! I have not see my extra terrestrial comrades on these boards, anywhere! So a tribute has been called! Everyone, make a xenomorph. For those of you unfamilliar, here is an abridged list of their features: Tail with a spearhead-like bit on the end - it is prehensile. His claws (and tail) can penetrate metal armor, hull plates, etc... He is not a member of a hive mind, can think for himself, but the will of the queen almost always overpowers his own. He sucreets/drools a…

Shadowcat1313 and I have gotten the okay from Traveller's Marc Miller to put together a PDF of TravellerHERO. It'll be writeups of all things Traveller for use in HERO/Star Hero. Shadowcat1313 and I (and a few other Traveller gurus he knows) will be collaborating on this effort, and the file PDF will reside with Shadowcat1313's files on StarHeroFandom. No details on the when yet, I've just built the cover and stylesheets in InDesign, and we have to get the content written and collected. Long Live Star Hero!

I'm sure you've all seen the Old Republic trailer by now. (If not, here it is again.) And one thing struck me about it. This is thousands of years, apparently, before the trilogy. Yet the technology is exactly the same, if not even a little more advanced. The beam weapons of the Trilogy did not have nearly that much firepower in portable form. The design of the lightsaber seems more advanced here than it is in the trilogy. And in the other trailer ships behave no differently than they do in the original. Which makes me think about what it means when a galaxy-spanning civilization makes no major, game-changing technological advances in the course of hundr…

So, what your favorite clever sci-fi weapon? I've been working on a campaign and I was thinking about how lame its gotten to portray lasers and Ion/Meson/particle guns. I want something really interesting. What have you come up with?

For the sake of the new message forums, this is just an FYI that I've started working on Hero stats for the Babylon 5 Universe. I've set up a web site at: http://www.aroooo.com/rpg_stuff/b5/index.php for those interested. I'll keep this thread posted on updates as they come out. Aroooo

I understand why there are lightsabers in Star Wars; the Jedi Order is (or was) a part of the setting. But there are other examples of swords in scifi. Klingons have the bat'leth. The Narn and Centauri have their own blades. Traveller, Warhammer 40000, and Halo all include swords in their arsenals. But why? Swords aren't used in combat nowadays, and they aren't about to make a comeback in the battlefield anytime soon. Why would they make a comeback in the far future? The Traveller rpg has some explanation: Swords are used instead of guns to prevent damaging internal systems when fighting on board a starship. They are a feature on sword & planet…

It's patchy and needs a lot more work, but for any Trek fans who want to use the info, I've posted TrekHero.pdf at http://rbrucecom.tripod.com/ I've got package deals, Federation races, some weapons, tricorders, etc, but there's lots of work to go. Any CONSTRUCTIVE criticism appreciated, but REMEMBER that it is very much a work in progress getting all my notes from 20 years ago hauled together and converted to 5E.

Warning: weirdness ahead. I'm working on a campaign in which quantum entanglement is used for instantaneous communications over extremely long (interstellar) distances. (I know this assumes some major technological breakthroughs. I'm okay with that.) In most cases a pair of entangled communicators are created together and one of them is transported to another star system via FTL spacecraft. No problem -- the two star systems can now communicate in 'real time.' It's easy enough to simulate this in Hero using Mind Link with some limitations. Yes, this has some serious causal implications, but they're nothing compared to what's next.... What's keeping me up at nig…

I've been working on this campaign for at least a year, if not longer. It's mostly finished, barring a bit of fine tuning. It took a long time because I think it's only proper to develop a setting fully before I let the PCs destroy it. Anyway, the main premise in the design was to use technology that at least has been given serious consideration, if it's not currently being developed already. There is a bit of handwavium involved to increase playability, such as space combat, but I've tried my best to minimize it. Another premise is to do away with certain sci-fi trappings. Since I'm setting the campaign in the near future, all space travel is limited to the so…

This thread is similar to the Random Links thread in the NGD. It's for scifi-related videos, articles, pictures, etc. for topics that don't quite fit anywhere in the threads here. If you find something interesting but don't really want to start a new discussion about the topic, feel free to post it here.

This is a question that has as many answers as there are sci-fi fans, but nevertheless I feel compelled to ask: what is your favorite sci-fi weapon? There have been many weapons in science fiction (especially in the military fiction subgenre of sci-fi) and some are truly innovative. For instance, the Luxan qualta blade (from Farscape) is a sword that can also be used as a blaster rifle. It's an artistic weapon for a warrior race. I'm curious to find out what people consider the "ultimate" sci-fi weapon. Some guidelines: I'm thinking man-portable weapons - no black-hole weapons or particle-beam spine-mounts, if you please. (Well, unless there's an author who make…

This project has a new name. It is now: HERO: Combat Evolved This is it, the official "Thia got off his rear and finally started putting this into HERO Designer" HALO thread. I hope you all enjoy what I've got coming; when this is done (and now, finally, i can do it with far less pain) I'll be contacting Arooo to have him put it up on StarHeroFanDom. For your consumption, I give you, in this first post: -- Human Arsenal, in .hdp format. For those of you who do not have HDv3, please pick it up, however, I am more than happy to post individual weapons for those who really really want them but don't have HD. This group includes: MA5B Assault Rifle [Halo 1…

http://io9.com/5842947/ Way above my scientific literacy, but this is one of the things CERN was built for. They even state "this doesn't break relativity" and note that what they have proof of is just a measurement they can't explain; the neutrinos got to the destination 60 nanoseconds quicker than light over a distance of 730km.

If I were to write up some of the spacecraft in my hard SF campaign, how much damage should I assign the rail guns? Is the damage in Star HERO's rail gun write-up good enough, or should bigger ships have guns that do more damage?

When we start thinking about the great expanse of space and what kind of beings might inhabit it, one thing we tend to do is think of how dangerous 'the other' could be. We do this on earth, of course, when we discuss how humans aren't the fastest, strongest, most poisoness, etc. But what if we have it all wrong? What if we are just about he pentacle of dangerous beings? The following is a joking short of an alien anthropologist discussing humans. Enjoy! Soar.

I'm in the early stages of trying to come up with a science fiction campaign. It's going to be interstellar in scale, with FTL. While I'm not going for space opera or epic, one element I do want to include, I think, is more mysticism than typical science fiction settings or games. What I'm thinking of mixing in is a sort of "otherspace", that allows things like FTL, psionics of a sort, and other strangeness. There's also the possibility of "horrors from otherspace" if I want to go that way, even if it's just for a session or two. (Maybe even eldritch things that feed on "psionic" energy, lurking in wait...) So, does anyone have any thoughts on this sort of thin…
