Pretty much that, yeah. Doesn't mean we're nominated yet, but we made the "top ten or so" list submitted at GTS for the retailer panel to pick nominees from. Fingers crossed! dw

...or at least the one that counts as 3000 (NGD posts not being eligible!) I have begun an SF related poll in NGD where I hope we can come up with the ten core SF books to read. I have cross-posted to Star Hero because this is probably where the greatest interest in SF should naturally be and there may be those of you that do not regularly carouse in NGD. You can read the original post (and current books) at this link. There are links in that post to vote on proposed additional books. Doc

Hello one and all! Although I am not a TOTAL newbie to Hero, it's been a long while since I ran a game and I have never taken the full plunge into designing a campaign using the rules. In short, this is a help request in my effort to build a newbie-friendly SF setting for Hero. I am using Hero System 6E and have Star Hero 6E on hand. My questions are the first step stuff: Does anyone have any advice on where to start? How can I make Hero as friendly as possible for new players? Is there anyone who wouldn't mind "holding my hand" through the process and being an advisor? Crikey, now that I think of it... I don't even know which questions to …

In this forum we usually talk about spacecraft and interstellar travel with good reason. But since there is such a thing as earthbound science fiction, let's go under the sea for a bit. How do you think submarine warfare will be like in the future? Will there be any significant changes? One advantage we have with this type of campaign is that we already have this technology. We have nuclear-powered subs and missiles. We also don't need to worry about gravity or FTL. Any thoughts or comments on this?

For some reason I got to re-thinking about the Reavers from Firefly again (i think I wanted to create a "basic" Reaver 5 years ago, but long since forgot about it), and some thoughts I might have on them. Some ideas on how to build them, some habits, and possible other settings. (I am still on 5th ed, so there is possible changes I might not know to factor in). Basically just for discussion. (as I know it would up to GM, but, curious to other's ideas) -well, I was thinking as far as the basic characteristics, for the most part they would be to the same level they were before they turned in most stats. Possible changes that could be done. Possible a couple of po…

I don't know if/when/where it'll catch on in the "real world" but this idea is too awesome to pass up for my Star Hero campaign. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=paving-slab-generates-electricity-footfalls

Any artistic types out there want to make a little pocket money and get their name in a Hero book? I need a star map that looks good for a book I'm doing the layout on. I've seen some of the star map maker websites and programs out there, but frankly this kind of stuff leaves me completely baffled so it's not something I feel terribly comfortable doing myself. I can give you the names of the systems that need to be mapped, but the rest would be up to you. Anyone interested? PM me!

I found this webcomic last night at bigheadpress.com, and it's a 5-day-a-week strip. There's also an online store with the site, where (unless I'm mistaken) one can buy the collected volumes of the strip (2 volumes thus far) in paper book format or PDF. The series is centered around life at a mining community based on the asteroid Ceres, and the dominant political power is an Earth-based organization called the United Worlds (which I suspect is a logical extension of the United Nations). The UW, as portrayed in the strip, is something of a repressive government (which is similar to how the UN is portrayed in the works of military sci-fi authors such as To…

The OPERA experiment has repeated and confirmed their original FTL neutrino result, with some modifications that would seem to rule out certain sources of systematic error. http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2011/11/neutrinos-screw-einstein/ So while the result is still improbable it still can't be ruled out either. Next up is for MINOS and (facility in Japan whose name I can't remember) to try to verify the results themselves, sometime next year.

How would i go about making the character have dark jedi powers? If I made dark jedi powers how would I them have a corrupting effect on the character like how using the dark side of the force effect the user? What would the power work the best as psionics? I have thought that he might use his power as Sith Assassin or Sith Marauder but I not 100% sure on it. Should he have the the ability to become invsibile when moving since he can move fast? Would give him the ability to good leaping ability as an ability and not a natural part of him? I would like him have them power to clouded a target's mind, causing them to slow down both mentally and physically. This will m…

Just got Lux Aeternum - did a quick scan and then reading mechanics. Two abbreviations I didn't know - might be base books. might be Star Hero or might be in Lux Aeternum and I haven't read it. Both preced with "if GM is using X then the cost is" X being IIDD and GCGS. Given I've not played 6E, but I didn't expect to come do a dead stop in an Hero book due to abbreviations.

The books are all set to be at GenCon (except Fires of Heaven, which is three times as big as the other books and we just couldn't get ready in time) -- I talked with the printer yesterday and all is well.

From the back cover of Terracide: The Earth is No More Humanity was struggling to catch up with its alien neighbors when Terra ceased to exist. The attack had been a long time coming; It crossed lightyears of space before impact. Thousands of relativistic weapons swept across the system in a matter of hours, moving too swiftly for anyone to see them coming, try to escape, or to warn anyone else what was happening. When they struck the homeworld, the surface of Terra became a molten holocaust, and the oceans boiled away into the tortured skies. Every settlement on Luna, Mars, and the Galilean moons met the same fate. Colonies on smaller moons and asteroids s…

So, my players went to planet Bicornn/Glisten (2331 Spinward Marches), which is listed as having a Renaissance technology level. The native race is constantly at war with the human settlers (more or less). I wanted the natives to have weapons which were useful but also appropriate. I settled on making some unusual weapons that kind of fit the tech level while still being interesting enough to give the players pause. I post them here for comments. I basically want5ed to give the planet a whimsical air without destroying canonical science fictional bits already in the campaign. Please note that these weapons are built under my system, which gives weapons levels of Armo…

Not necessarily a Constitution Class cruiser, but how would HEROdom design starships that could move, maneuver, and trade shots at FTL?

Hi all i'm started reading Clone Wars comics books (and sooner or later i'll start seeing clone wars serial), and of course i'm wondering (again) about a campaing in SW universe i used to GM a SW campaign for almost 10 years with WEG d6 system, but some real life events and change of interest in some players made force stopped the campaign (just few months before Battle of Hoth!!! Man i really hated my ex-players è_é ) campaign was (of course) in Ep IV-VI range and using WEG d6 system sometime i still play (with a different group) within Ep IV-VI range using WEG d6, this time as a player so, basically, i got a lot of book and several year of experience in WEG…

The thread title says it all. I'm looking for a few knowledgeable HERO reviewers to write some serious online reviews of Terracide. Although I've had a lot of feedback (mostly positive) in various venues, a couple of capsule reviews here and there, and of course the obligatory "hater", there hasn't been an informative, authoritative, thoroughgoing review by an experienced reviewer of HERO material yet. I've been too laid back about this for too long; now it's time to make something happen. Mattingly has informed me that Blackwyrm Games can provide a review copy for this purpose. So if you'd like to participate, send a private message to myself (Xavier Onassiss) or Ma…

After the last season of my Traveller Hero campaign ended, I read an article on Winchell Chung's site (authored by Neel Krishnaswami) regarding Causal Influence Diagrams and their application to gaming. I decided I really, really wanted to do something like this for my game, to more thoroughly involve the engineer PC. Well, the second season of my campaign has started up and it's time to put my money where my mouth is. So, I whipped this up today. What does the collective think? Did I get anything egregiously wrong? Are there more options to consider? And should I adapt this to maneuver drives (though they should be an order of magnitude simpler) and other starship syst…

For a long time I have owned both the Turakian Age and Terran Empire campaign books, but I could never quite get a campaign off the ground for a variety of reasons. Then I came up with a way to merge them. I worked out a rough alternate history that takes the world from the Turakian Age to the Terran Empire age. It begins with one important event NOT happening: Kal Turak never returns as Takofabes. Thus, there is extended prosperity for the world since Takofanes never fights an apocalyptic battle against the world. Magic never crashes, the continents remain the same. I have some vague idea of a Dark Age brought about by stagnation and chaos. From there…

So, one of the difficulties of running a plausible Traveller Hero campaign is the differing technological levels of the various member worlds of the Imperium (to say nothing of worlds outside the Imperium that may be either unimaginably magic-tech or savagely primitive). I've seen various methods proposed on the boards for reflecting the advancement of weapons technology. Some prefer the idea of just giving higher-tech weapons more dice. So, where my longbow can maybe shoot a 2d6 RKA arrow, the .30-06 shoots a 3d6 round, the Gauss Rifle a 4d6 flechette, and the Laser Pistol a 5d6 beam. Armor of higher tech levels would have a correspondingly higher DEF. There are man…

On stardate 1701.2012 it's finally time: Star Trek Online goes free to play. The feature matrix looks a lot like lot like the one Champions Online Free to Play. For example, there is no "paid something once or was subscriber, get's a little more" - level. I am not entirely certain how powerfull the character creator is now, but back when I played it as demo it was quite usefull for any humanoid alien. Afaik some non-Uniform Clothing is availible too, but I am not certain if it is free/unlockable with silver play. So you might even be worth the download for people not in a Star Trek Campaign. One intersting aspect for all those who already have champions online: S…

There's this movie pitch that asserts that More air travel is used for tourism than business (not sure if this is true, unless you count going to visit family as tourism) Aliens would have better tech advances, such that they would find space travel is as easy as we find air travel. (insert anal probe joke here. Seriously though, I'm not confident there are any sentient aliens, and seriously doubt FTL travel is possible, and I doubt anybody will spend 10,000 years on ice for tourism purposes) Our solar eclipses are interesting and unusual in the galaxy, because they require a planet with a reasonably clear atmosphere and other conditions that would let an alien sta…
