I’m *tentatively* beginning to talk to our investors about a project that would be like Champions Complete, but would be for Fantasy Hero. Like Champions Complete, this project would be a “minimalist” 240-page, softcover, $40 MSRP black-and-white book with no original interior artwork but an awesome new cover. However, there are a couple of different directions I could see this project going in, and I would like your input. Fantasy Hero Complete: A stand-alone book that contains “everything” you need to play Fantasy Hero. I've given some thought about how such a book might be crammed into 240-pages, and it would be a “very” tight fit. But I think it could be done if …

I've been putting together a list of real places on Earth that seem to have been created by some aspiring fantasy writer. I'd like to know what everyone else has tucked away on their hard drives or bookmarked. My List includes: Museum of the Dead Bone Cathedral Wieliczka Salt Mines The Gate To Hell Crater Lake Mirror of Heaven The links go to my personal site but most of them were originally buried in wiki or on travel blogs somewhere else. So, what cool fantastic sites do you know about?

So I have a few problems with trying to teach Fantasy Hero Complete to new folks. I am tying to teach a buddy FHC, and he's been gaming for decades, but there are some problems cropping up. I'd like to get some feedback from sone newbies, or anyone else, who can see the problems with learning the system from an "outsider's" point of view. My buddy's point is that the new FHC is written with the intention of teaching new people, but it is written and presented in a way that is useful to Hero System veterans, not newbies. First off, in all honesty, it's horribly edited. I can find at least one typographical error on virtually every page, which is really bad form for what …

I love the setting and was curious if there's anyone else on these boards who do too? Steve did and amazing job with the book and I think it deserves more supplements. Although the base book is very detailed in terms of races, geography, theology, etc, I think there's tons of room to expand on. The setting has such good bones that it feels criminal to not expand on it. Also, an update to 6th edition would be fantastic although strictly not necessary.

Hello all. I eventually want to get together a group of friends and play Fantasy Hero with them. I'd like to play one of the small folk, because I like the idea of the "tiny but mighty" sort of character, so I like the gnomes and halflings. But seeing all the different versions of fantasy RPGs like D&D, Pathfinder, and so on, can you all please tell me a concise and consistent comparison between gnomes and halflings? What they are more or less like, their pastimes and combat tactics, and their boons and banes. I'd like to have info encompassing many different versions of other fantasy RPGs to give me a solid idea. Any help? Thanks.

Work is ongoing with this project, and I plan on posting some things here to help give a glimpse into what the project is. Essentially, the Field Guide is a book of the other stuff in the world besides monsters and treasures and player characters. It is about the animals, plants, minerals and such that player characters can interact with to their advantage or detriment. This includes poisons, trades such as blacksmithing and leatherworking, herbs of fantastic enchanted quality, and much more. For example, in the world of Jolrhos you will find this: Pepper Moss This dappled green and white hanging moss is uncommon on trees. It dangles like Spanish moss, espe…

Hello all! I'm trying to think of a unique outfit for a modern day character that clearly states "I am a mage". The color will be some shade of blue or purple, and there will be gold trim...possibly even embroidered pinpricks representing stars. The fabric itself will be something appropriately luxurious. However, there are two broad categories of clothing I want to avoid -> 1. Cloaks/robes. 2. Suits (three-piece, business, tuxedos, etc). So, with the above rules in mind, i'd like suggestions for what the actual outfit shape/style might be.

What types of things that might come up in a fantasy game* ruin the immersive experience for you? I'm not asking you to come up with just anything that *would* ruin it, but what actually has ruined it. What have you actually encountered in play that disrupted your willful suspension of disbelief? *And you can also include things outside of games, such as fantasy literature or movies or TV shows, etc. For me, the main one is anachronisms - which is a very broad category. It includes all of the following: * Injection of sci-fi elements (Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, anyone?) I don't like ray guns and robots mixed with my rapiers an…

Need a good name for Mind Control magic 1 2

I'm thinking of making my next cadre of villains and NPCs having some sort of power play behind the scenes using a lot of mind control magic. I know the grimoire calls it sorcery but that sounds too generic to me. I'd like a name that can translate into a title like sorcery becomes sorcerer. I remember Rolemaster calling it mentalism which would be a perfect fit I, and my players, didn't already associate mentalist and mentalists with supers. Enchantment would be great if it wasn't already associated with something that is a good fit too. Mesmerist and Hypnotist sound too pulp. I briefly toyed with "Confusionist" but that just sounds silly. I even thought …

A lot of good artwork has gotten posted on these boards. Much of that is located in the NGD Art thread. But, with all the recent fallout, several of us have taken it upon ourselves to diversify the locations where we want to post our work. Thus, in honor of Cybertooth's "If you build it, they will come" thread , I present a thread for posting Fantasy pics. I'll put a BUNCH of my stuff in here, and I hope others shall follow. My requests? If you like my stuff... use it. Just don't publish it. If you do a write up based on one of these pics, post it if you can. It'd be neat to see how other folk interpret things. If you have your own art and want to toss it in the …

What happened guy? Everybody stop playing Fantasy Hero? It's been pretty quiet in here lately. This board is usually the 2cnd or 3rd most popular section after the Champions and Hero System Discussion boards. Why has the traffic in here died down so much lately?

I wrote this a few years ago. As far as I recall, I've never posted it anywhere. Until now. With the Ultimate Skill coming, and all the buzz on the board about skills now, I thought I'd go ahead and post it. By the way, I remember writing more than this, and I did intend to go on and expand the idea to the other adventuring archetypes. Who knows, maybe I'll finally do so. And if I turn up the "lost materiels" that I suspect are still hidden in my stuff in storage, I'll post them too. Lucius Alexander The palindromedary wonders if we'll be able to fit the whole thing in this next post....

I've always felt that the DnD monk, being based on Far Eastern philosophy and traditions clashes with the Western European feel of D&D. So why is it so popular a class? Is it because of the powers associated with it? Does it fill a niche that the other classes don't? Is it because of the prevalence in martial arts action heroes in modern media? The reason I ask these questions is because I am building what amounts to a class system for a game I am planning. I keep looking at the classes that I've built (which are really just archetypes that have Characteristics spreads in them) and I am debating on whether the Asian mystic martial artist has a place in there. I wo…

I've recently taken a liking to building a campaign within a desert setting, and I'm contemplating replacing horses and camels with something a bit more exotic that might fit the terrain as a tamed riding animal. Most such alternatives that I've seen in fiction are either some kind of large lizard (like a Star Wars Dewback) or a flightless bird (like an ostrich maybe) big enough to work as a riding animal. What are some suggestions for a desert riding animal that I might consider? I'm also open to having several options available, such as one sort of beast for a draft animal pulling wagons and another for riding fast.

This is just going to be (to begin with) a simple macro-free excel spreadsheet to convert currencies for different systems. Including coinage. The only tricky bit is the "dollar worth" (I don't know the actual word - I never did economics). But in general I've tried to keep the most common wage relative in the most common coinage. So it's simply a matter of comparison before breaking it down into different coins. ie one Australian dollar = 0.59 Euros or 0.76 US dollars (or 0.0125 medieval pennies)

(Tried to post this last night but it seems to have disappeared). I'm going to run a campaign that mixes high fantasy with early firearms (roughly American Civil War era weapons). I'm looking for anyone else's experiences mixing these elements. I want the presence of firearms to not completely dominate the setting, but for it to be a major element whose presence is felt even in scenes where it isn't featured - such as more light armor or no armor fighters, and a premium on magical protection from firearms when possible. My initial thoughts: 1) I'll need to think about how fighting styles will reflect the nature of guns. There will be a set of basic maneuvers …

I could swear this has been addressed elsewhere in this forum, but I can't find it for the life of me. I'm interested in coming up with a comprehensive list of character concepts that certain class-based RPGs can't effectively handle. Here are some obvious ones, but what else am I missing? - Experienced But Aged Veteran Warriors - Lightly Armored Warriors That Aren't Monks - Characters With Severe Physical or Mental Impairments - Kids - Arbitrary Races Like Anthropomorphic Animals Or Dralasites Bonus points for characters out of popular works of fiction that could never be done in class systems, e.g. Last Airbender.

I'm going to start posting a few monsters from my upcoming Bestiary book here, it says "monster of the day" but that's just a play on the soup of the day, not a promise of daily updates. In an email exchange today with an old gaming group of mine, who has since moved on (without me) to D&D 3.5 (and later to Pathfinder), one of the guys said I'd like Pathfinder, and another then gently mocked me, saying I turn my nose up at games where characters are created by choosing from pre-defined lists of abilities. The following was my response, explaining why I stick with HERO for fantasy instead of Pathfinder. I'm curious to hear other folks' thoughts on why you stick with HERO for fantasy (or why you don't, if you don't). Actually, I don't have anything against choosing from lists of abilities with specific, pre-defined benefits to build my chara…

Ever since Post-Apoc Hero came out, I've been dying to run the Revelations 1001 setting, and I've finally conned talked my players into it! Has anyone else played it? I have a lot of ideas, and am cribbing some old Chivalry & Sorcery stuff among other sources. But I thought I'd see if anyone else here has been down that road, and if so how it came out, what you would recommend, etc? Note that at least one of my players reads these Forums [waves to ghost-angel], so anything you think should be for GM's eyes only (excluding what's in PAH) feel free to PM me. For folks that don't have Post-Apoc Hero, the basic idea is a historical/low-fantasy game set in the year…

I'm not sure if this is a RAW question, or a GM ruling question, or both. So I'm posting it here instead of the Ask Steve section. Long spears, pikes and the like are 2-handed weapons. Which means you shouldn't be able to use a shield with one. (Ignoring for now the I Have Enough STR To Use It One-Handed Option.) But there are obviously countless historical and fictional examples of people - heck, whole armies doing exactly that. I could've sworn there was a rule covering this in either the core rules, FH, or in the Equipment Guide, but can't find it - please point me in the right direction if you know where it is. If not, let me know how you handle that, or would…

As you know, Bob, Evil Overlords have a list of things to do (or not do) should they ever be in a position of power. However, it is clear from fantasy and other escapist literature that not-so-evil leaders also sometimes do very foolish things, and could use a guide to proper behavior. Thus, this list.... When I Am the Benevolent Ruler... As a general rule, I will remember that I am not the Evil Overlord, and should not indulge in behavior that will confuse my subjects on this point. I will ensure that all my potential heirs have interesting and important jobs to do, according to their abilities, so they will have less time to plot against one an…
