While doing my usual gaming stuff, I'm spending a couple of hours a day setting up a home-brewed Star Hero sector. I've come across something problematic, though. For the Energy Alien archetype, the Damage Shield is Always On and Inherent. Inherent means it can't be Drained, but does that also mean it can't be Suppressed? I was thinking they'd probably need some kind of protective suit, both to protect others from them and to avoid damaging their surroundings if they weren't shielded. If it can't be suppressed, how could I design a containment suit with the extant game mechanics?

Anyone have some interesting BIO-ware or Cyber-ware out there? I thought it would be nice to see what people out there and what we could come up with. Drakkenkin

Just thought of this and wondered what other people thought. In Star Trek TOS it was quite common for one crewman to be monitoring the "sensors". When some kind of threat appeared, someone else, usually Spock, would "take over" and "see" things that the other crewman was not able to "see". So, how do you build this? Should Sensors be something like: UV Perception: Only Useable by Others, OAF Bulky (Sensor Array) And each character using the Sensors must make his own PER roll when he uses them? This would make sense in the situation above, since the person with the higher INT (Spock) is the one who can "see" more. Also, the "more experienced…

I'm considering a concept for building ablative force fields (actually Force Walls in this case), in which the ablative effect is on the field's power supply rather than the defensive value of the shield itself. Basically, the idea is that the shield draws a minimal amount of energy to maintain itself, but dissipating the energy of an attack draws a great deal more; the exact energy drain would depend on the potency of the incoming attack. My first thought is to build the Force Wall with an automatic END Drain Side Effect which activates whenever it comes under attack, the only (minor) problem being that the Side Effect would have to be proportional to the attack whi…

As with many others, I'm very saddened by the weak showing of the Star Hero line. Probably it just isn't a very good time in general for sci-fi games, with the Lord of the Rings movies exciting people over the fantasy genre. In particuar, I'm sorry to see Scourges Of The Galaxy dropped from the publication list. I had been hoping to lean on that book heaviliy for opponent ideas in my eventual SH campaign; its absence will make my work that much more difficult (possibly difficult enough to scuttle any further work on it -- but we shall see). Hopefully it'll show up early in the 2005 schedule. I'm also disappointed (albeit a little less so) in the dropping of Gal…

Lookit me crosspost! I mentioned this in the Non-Gaming Discussion forum but then it occurred to me that it was certainly StarHero Worthy. Forget the trailer you may have seen in the theatre for THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK and go see the two minute intro on the website: http://www.thechroniclesofriddick.com Suddenly I want to see this thing!

I would love to run a near future sci-fi campaign (comparable to Transhuman Space), but don't actually have the time or energy to develop all the background stuff. Does anybody happen to have such a campaign on the web or background notes they can post here?

Zero-G deterioration

When a person spends an extended amount of time in a zero- or lower-gravity environment, they lose bone mass, their heart shrinks, and other such things occur. in space, this is easily rectified with rotational gravity, but how can this be prevented on a lower-G world such as Mars, within a hard/low SF context? Any suggestions?

Subluminal Travel 1 2

Hey - I was hoping we had some hard science or physics buffs out there who could help me with something. I'm going to be running a Jovian Chronicles game, which is essentially a hard-science setting that occurs within Earth's solar system. I want (after things get rolling) to add the development of subluminal interstellar travel, which would be well beyond the reasonable scope of the particle combustion chambers (a high-energy magnetic "bottle" to hold a micro-fusion reaction) - and are still limited by reaction mass. In other words, its going to be a major, experimental, development in the game. As such I need a theoretically sound drive concept that…

I've been looking at perhaps getting Terran Empire and using it as a basis of my Sci-fi game. However, I haven't looked particularly hard at this book. Let me tell you what I'm looking for, and let me know if TE is pretty close: 1. Setting that has enough overall detail to be useful, but not so much as to make it so that I can't add my own nuances to the setting. 2. Multiple alien races that can be used as PC's. 3. Setting allows for many different plot lines - Exploration, military, piracy, revolutions, political intrigue, etc. What I don't want is a very confining setting, where you get pretty much pidgeon-holed into a fairly set meta-plot. I w…

I don't know how many Heavy Gear fans we have hear. But the one thing I'd always wanted to do with HERO was to run a urban war with mecha. Make it a dirty and nasty as you like, but idea is very much the Battletech (we mercs) ethos. How 'well' does the vechicals rules work when I'm tossing around units in the 300 range? What caps should I honestly consider? Keep in mind that these are 'modern' battle units, and quite deadly.

Hey everyone, Cross posting in the Fantasy Hero and Champions forums. I'm almost done with a New and Very Very Very Improved Hero Helper For those who don't know, it's a program to help GM's during gaming sessions, like roll dice quickly etc. The graphics are more appealing and I've included an on-line help. Besides that, here is what I've done so far and things that are in the planning. Comments are welcomed. What's Improved Dice Roller Now it will roll the Killing damage for Killing Attacks. I've also improved the interface so that you can have unlimited number of Pre-Roll settings and setting up those Pre-Rolls much easier. Explo…

Since we've had svereal Doctor Who discussions, one thing I'm wondering is how you would build a TARDIS in HERO. The most obvious thing to know about a TARDIS is that it can go anywhere in Time and Space. Usually, however, it is restiricted to a single universe (it would have to pass through some sort of phenomena to get into a different universe), it takes real time to get from place.time to place/time, its course can be altered mid-flight, and it can materialize anywhere. The extrerior can be made to look like any phsycial object (unless the Chameleon Circuit is broken as in a certain Type 40 of our intimate acquiantance). In any event, the exterior look of th…

A Murder of Crows Ariyal wasn’t exactly running–just walking briskly, thank you–but as she strode back into the Panopticon, one booted foot slipped and she had to make a frantic grab for support. Blasted formal attire, with its hard-soled boots! Those boots--and the voluminous robes, and the ridiculous headgear--made up in discomfort what they lacked in practicality. “Which is everything,” said the Lady Talsumnavariyal, youngest Valeyard ever to hold the office. She released the pillar that had kept her upright–one of a pair that stood where Rassilon’s Way opened into the Panopticon--and gave its partner on the other side of the corridor a sour smile.…

Meals Ready To Eat(MREs)- Also called "Meals Rejected By The Enemy" and "Meals Ready For Execution", MREs were univerally regarded as the bane of every solider's existance. Each MRE was packed in a tough plastic bag, which held- *The entree, containing a chemical heating element that would heat the meal up to eating temperature in less than five minutes and hold that temperature for another twenty-five minutes. The bag has a zip-top opening for eating the meal. *A "chew-toy" or cold food item-usually crackers or biscuits, with a form of spread. *Powdered coffee or hot chocolate, with triple the caffeen count. *A "dessert" item, usually some form of candy. *A…

Humanity is exploring the outer planets in this system and discovers that there is intelligent life on the planet Pluto. Since Pluto recieves extremely little solar energy I realize that this life would have to be extremely resistant to temps that humans concider freezing while having a hard time with human comfort temps. The thing that I am wondering about is what they would look like, any abilities that they might possess, any problems that might arise from that low-grav planet, etc. I greatly appreciat any and all advice that you great ones would offer to me.

Its been mentioned several times through the SH forum about a program called Celestia. From their home page: "Celestia is a free real-time space simulation that lets you experience our universe in three dimensions. Unlike most planetarium software, Celestia doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even beyond the galaxy. " For the longest time it was PC/Linux/Unix only. I noticed today that there is now an OSX version! http://www.shatters.net/celestia/ Have fun! Aroooo
