Catch the punch? We have all seen it in the movies, some low life tries to punch the hero and the hero actually catches the punch. Block wouldn’t work because you didn’t actually catch the punch. So how do you do this? Is there a maneuver for this in the Ultimate Martial Artist? Yet another reason to buy the book. Thanks

In last week's game our group of heroes was stymied by one villian's Darkness to Sight Group power. We were fighting the Crowns of Krim (sp?) and had taken down Temblor and the blood demon (I don't remember his name). The last remaining attacker decided to retreat, and picking up one of his comrades began to fly away. Ordinarily this would post no problem for us, but he then turned on his 4" AoE Darkness to Sight Group power, centered on himself. Now, I'm playing a Dr. Strange-like character with a 45-point "Elemental Magic" VPP. I know that the fleeing villian is hurting. First, I ask the GM if the special effect of my fire EB will counter the bad guy's darkness. No…

I often see things like IIRC and LMAO. Is their a master list some where some one could point me to find all these meanings? I am not new to messages boards but I have never really cared before.

Ok...here's the situation: The speedster wants to do a Passing Strike on a bad guy. The bad guy has a henchman with a held phase. When the hero attacks, the henchman(slavishly loyal) jumps in the path. The hero thinks that he should be quick enough to react and go around the henchman. The rules say basically that defensive actions like this ALWAYS go off first. This comes up all the time...whether it's a held phase or an aborted phase. How should I handle this? Use the DEX rolls maybe...even though it's a defensive move? Rob

Quantum Singularity 1 2 3
by Blue- 57 replies

Here's the effect I'm looking at. Tell me if I'm in the ballpark on the mechanics employed. The character has the ability to manifest, for just the briefest of split seconds, a quantum singularity. The gravitational effects cause things in a radius around it to be sucked in toward it. But since the singularity blinks out almost instantly, it's just a matter of their momentum carrying them toward the center hex and possibly colliding with other things that were within reach. Make any sense? Not sure if I did. I'm thinking TK with an Explosion effect. The TK only grabs things and throws them toward the middle hex. Of course if there's nothing there to c…

Hi HERO fans, I am running a campaign and find the current rule of "GM Decides" for surprise a little...flat? How do others out there handle the chance of being surprised? Other game systems use random rolls or rolls on specific stats - has anyone come up with an equivalent for HERO? Thanks again for your input.

How would I build a power that had a cool down? For example, how would you make an EB that doesn't require Extra Time (you can use it at a moment's notice), but when you do use it, you can't use it again for, say five minutes, or whatever. I don't want Charges, because that's basically a limit per day. I don't want a limit per day, just force a character to take a brake between using the power. Thanks in advance, -cK

How would you build a disadvantage that you are often mistaken for somebody else, somebody famous. Social Limitation or Distinctive Features?

Okay, as most of you know, I like to point out weird rules issues and debate them, so now I will do it again... This time it is about Foci, and what makes on obvious or inobvious I will use as an example a James Bond type "Blaster Pen" 8d6 EB, 4 charges, *AF As immagined once it is fired it is obvious that the blast is coming from the pen, but while it is sitting there it looks like a normal pen, is it IAF or OAF?

I want to create a system for characters with psychic powers, augmented by foci (details to be decided). Now, there will be different psychic groups, like Pyrokinesis, Hydrokinesis, Telekinesis, etc. Now, using Pyrokinesis as an example, what I want to do is give everybody who wants to be a Pyrokinetic one or two base powers, like EB and Change Environment: Affect Normal Fires. This is the innate part of their powers. However, if they hold these focusing foci, they can alter their powers. Examples: Wall Focus: They can make walls of fire (or water, force, etc.) Armor Focus: Armor or Damage Shield or FF or whatever. Movement Focus: Teleport thro…

Howdy. I was a Champions junkie from 1st ed through the BBB, but for some reason the BBB just didn't click with me or the group and we moved on to other systems (gasp). Anyhow, after resisting for months, I finally broke down and picked up the 5th edition and was VERY impressed, enough to pick up the rest of the new books. After all these years I'm seriously thinking about running with the Hero System again, but . . . The one thing that does not appear to have changed is the slow pace of combat. Granted we used to run with 6-8 people, but even with everyone very familiar with the rules and combat notesheets, the fights still took forever. My question (final…

A LONG time ago, I had some hex maps that folded up to an 8 1/2 x 11 stack, but when folded out, were at least 8 such sheets effectively in size, and had a path, preset boulders, trees, etc. on them, and were properly sized for miniatures. I'm unable to find such, but they're great scenery for "random" encounters. Anybody know what I'm talking about and where to get something like this?

I am having trouble with the power advantage AoE Accurate and it causes me a great deal of trouble in my game. I think this is because I am not 100% sure how it works. So I thought I would throw out a question here to see what your guys take on this power advantage is. Just looking for a little discussion on this advantage I will be up front here and say I do not like the advantage as I feel it offers nothing, new. To me if a person wants to make an accurate attack they should by combat levels, to simulate this (like a scope adding to accuracy of a gun). You can always buy the 5 point CSLs as “powers’ to simulate a wide range of effects to simulate an accur…

as in Lilo and Stitch? If so could you post it? if not i think we should be able to write him up with all the examples in the Movie we should be able to get him, for example, he holds back a tanker trunk going what i can guess to be 60 miles per hour, is just barely knocked out from a concetrated blast from a space ships rocket engines and the subsequent long fall to the ground... and those are just a few examples i am SURE we can write him up, so who's up for it?

Darkness or Flash? Why buy any amount of Flash when you could buy: Darkness to Sight Group 1" radius, Personal Immunity (+1/4), Ranged (+1/2), Reduced Endurance 0 END (+1/2), Usable As Attack (+1) For 32 points? I don't understand how someone escapes from this. It seems to me that as long as you make your initial attack roll the target is blind until they leave the range of the attack, in this case 150", leave LoS, or the attacker is knocked out.

Two recent rulings from Steve seem to be at odds with each other. Earlier, when asked how much weight an Area of Effect TK power could lift, he replied it was the same as the STR of the TK. His latest question asked how AoE TK hit and grabbed multiple people. He replied that the victims are damaged by and must fight against the TK STR. So in one case, you have to apportion out your TK STR over an area, and in the other you can apply the STR to multiple objects simultaneously. Doesn't this seem inconsistent? I'd like it better if AoE TK could apply its STR against each hex simultaneously - what do you think? Is there a game balance problem with that? …

I want to run a HERO game geared to sci-fi war, similar to Starship Troopers and the game Halo. Any suggestions on any HERO supplements that might help me create and further define the setting?

In the 5th ed book, there are penalties listed for walking casually, walking slowly and walking carefully (don't have the book in front of me), ranging from -1 to -3 to the rolls. The skill Stealth, by it's nature, includes such things as being quiet when walking, among other things. Really, you can almost ignore buying Stealth and get a freebie -1 to -3 to opponents hearing PER roll just by being quiet when walking. Now, to be fair, having a Stealth roll of, say 13 or less can allow up to a -10, assuming a perfect 3 (but then I might say the opponent simply couldn't hear you - period!). If you use Stealth, do these roll minues get added in addition to Stealth (made Steal…

Do you allows characters to lose skills and regain their points in a long term campaign? For example, a Martial Artist in a Pulp campaign who sees a friend dies and becomes a pacifist. Would you allow them to slowly exchange their CSLs for other skills, and maybe even contacts or perks? Thanks, -cK

ok, one thing that strikes me as funny is the varying effect for Absorb, i mean look at the math alone: with sixty points you can get: 12d6 absorbtion VS PD 6d6 absorbtion with varying effect so you can spend a zero phase to switch to PD or ED, but he can't absorb both at the same time and you have a max limit of 36 points 6d6 absorbtion VS PD AND 6d6 absorbtion VS ED this system has teh advantage that you can absorb both at the same time and you get twice as many points to absorb making it MUCH better than the 6d6 absorbtion with varying effect. so, why even buy varying effect, i mean you might as well go the route of buying both absorbtions …

I, for the life of me, cannot find the rules for giving bonuses to PER rolls. (Example: +3 to PER rolls with hearing to simulate super ears). Page number, please?
