Sometimes, when I am up late at night and my mind is wandering I find myself contemplating the game Freedom Fighters.I loved the atmosphere of the game, the involuntary stirings of Patriotic furver as my character raised the Stars and Stripes over a landmark after taking it back. I loved the fame I garnered as I battled the invading commie hoards. I loved the political intrigue as I made dangerous contacts inside the occupying forces' ranks. The back story always bugged me tho. How the Soviets came to power. How would you guys write an alternate history for a story like this? How would you bring the Soviets to world dominance? I always thought I would turn histo…

Anyone ever ran a combining mecha campaign (e.g., Voltron)? I remember reading about that in the Ultimate Vehicle book and thinking "Hey! That would be kinda fun." I'd need some "combination sequence music" though... and the ability to make that "light glare on shiny metal" sound effect.... WRRRRRNG! or however you'd write it.

The other day, my six-year-old son and I were waiting out in the van for my wife and daughter to come out of the store, and he began describing "Mighty Men", this game he plays (actually, I suspect he was making it up on the fly, because he usually tells me what sorts of stuff he's playing at any given time). Whenever he's old enough to pay attention long enough, I'll be sure to get him into RPGs. He started out by saying that the Mighty Men are cowboys who live in a jungle, where they have to fight gorillas and cheetahs, and they ride on giant bats. There is a group of knights that they fight sometimes, but both the Mighty Men and the knights fight Deegle and Spik…

Shadowless Sword is a Korean wuxia movie made in the last year or so. The plot is very basic -- lone female swordswoman must guard/accompany exiled prince back home so he can claim his heritage. While only the most flimsy of plots (and I've seen the same in several other movies -- such as Dragon Inn, The Hidden Fortress, and House Of Flying Daggers), Shadowless Sword is beautifully shot, with a nice sense of style in its cinematography. The costumes are often wonderfully fantastic, as are the weapons, fighting styles, and hair styles (yes... hair styles). The fight scenes are just amazing, with some of the most brilliant wirework I've seen yet. In addition, some of t…

Hey herodom, I'm looking for some free or extremely cheap resources for a campaign that would essentially mix the futuristic world from Back to the future part two, with a jacking in kinda cyberword like in many other cyberpunk or Tron or like megaman NTwarrior (cept no AIs, there are a couple programs, but most people there are either transported in or have the old-school plugged in by thier cerebral cortex) I've written up one character, where there is the real-world character subject to standard 75+75 heroic rules but everyone pays for a 200 point multi-form with the limitations "only in cyberspace -1" and as an option "physical body left behind when jacked in -1"…

Anyone interested in helping me work out an alternate U.S. history? I'm gearing up for a game, and would like a reasonable explanation for events in an alternate reality. In this alternate world, The United States is fractured into five separate nations, although they are now on reasonably good terms. The division is: Pacific Union (Washington, Origon, California, and Utah), Union of Texas (Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma), The Christian Coalition (Missouri, Kentucky, Tennesee, North Carolina, and all states south of that line), Union of New England (Virginia, Maryland, Pensylvania, and all states northeast, and the Midwest Union, containing all other …

Ok, I just got done playing this game, and we finally see just how powerful/skilled Vincent is...not to mention his origin. So who else has played this game through to its end? If you have and got some talent for converting characters I'd like to see Vincent in a couple of different forms if anyone could help. First could someone do him up as how he would translate from the game? Second could someone do up a variation of him for Fantasy Hero at 160pts...(our GM is nice and does not make us spend pts for weapons in this setting, and we don't have to buy a VPP either.) I'm mostly curious about him and might get an idea for characters based upon what I s…

Disclosure: The reader should be aware that Jason is a good friend of mine. With that out of the way, on to the review! It isn't easy to find a role-playing book would be a great read on its own if all the nuts and bolts and crunchy bits were removed. You Gotta Have Character is one of those rare books. With only minor modification the book could easily be used as a primer in any college level creative writing characterization course, as part of a class on ‘Notable People in History’ or as the basis for a really nifty TV series on a specialty cable channel. Through exhaustive research, Jason Walters brings us a collection of some of the most eclectic and downr…

I'm gonna run a cowboy campaign based roughly on the Lonesome Dove novel & mini series. I thought 50 + 50, hit locations, bleeding rules and to try and keep it semi-realistic. Anyone ran a western game, or have any tips or hints?

I ran across a DVD in Walmart tonight, "Dreams in the witch house", I thought it might be worth a rental but I'm not really willing to spend $20 for what is probably a really bad movie. Has anyone seen this? care to comment? Are there any decent HP Lovecraft movies out there? From beyond was Ok, if I found it cheap enough I'd probably get it. I've never really cared for Reanimator, far to goofy to be scary. I'm not aware of any others out there actually based on HPL although I know several movies have been loosely inspired by his stories.

With season two coming to a close next Sunday I've been wondering about what kind of a game world this show would provide. As I'm watching it I am constantly getting a low-powered X-Men feel from it. I mean its got the mutant/anti-mutant sentiment going, politicians pushing for the eradication/control of the mutants and is very rapidly approaching a Magneto-esque confrontation with the world governments. You've got Collier as Magneto, Shawn as Professor X...etc. Anyone else watch this show and get the same vibe?

Yep, it's another campaign thread crafted by yours truly. The setting is our real world around 1715. There are multiple characters involved in their own things and some corss-over. As for my perspective, I play a Scotsman that joined the military in order to reach Northern America, not long after the United Kingdom was created. I'll post my character and some fanfic detailing his story thus far. It's an online game ran over at Hero Central by Mastermind from this forum.

If you were to make a list of everyman skills for a Post Apoc style game what would you include? Assuming a skill heavy game.

This is probably a long shot but has anybody taken a stab at doing a Hero System write-up of any of the characters from this anime? It'd be particularly nice to find a write-up of Satella.

If one were to run say a somewhat Gamma-Worldish campaign. How would one expain it? It seems to me that, despite the severity of any event, civilization would reform within decades. While knowlege would be lost, it would not be back to day 1. It seems that it might hang on at the 19th and early 20th century for awhile. The human race would have to be *almost* wiped out, and yet kept from cities. While the nuclear strikes would work to keep people out of cities, they would not destroy enough people, nor would it destory all important cities/refineries/etc. Biological may take out enough of the population, it would leave most of the intellectual and technolog…

Hello all, I'm working on a co-created game world that is being developed interactively with my players as they create their characters. The setting is pseudo Rifts/post-apoc and has a lot of free reign as far as character possibilities. One of the things that I am looking at doing is setting up a modified Dark Champions style of Resource Points for equipment and vehicles and such. The basic idea is to have a Group Armoury that is fed with point donations from the players just like a team of supers pitching in for a base. On the same deal I was reading through the Dark Champions book and came across a little sidebar about doing guns as a multipower to rep…

I find myself on a "creative roll". After a long dry spell (writers block) my ideas are finally making it onto paper. WooHoo!! But there is something still not flowing. The enemy the PC's are fighting are an ancient evil that has plagued the world throughout recorded history. It is the source of all the legends of demons and the like. Since the game is designed to have a decidedly “anime” feel to it the names I am using at the moment really won’t do. Somehow the inspired “Class 5 Invader” doesn’t really cut it. I was thinking of names for the five types of invader/demon and one overall name.

Six-String Samurai Words cannot describe this film, it can only be seen -- then you will understand. I mean, how do you top Buddy Holly getting into a swordfight with Slash over who will be King of Rock & Roll and Lost Vegas?

Seems like there has been a resurgence of zombie movies the past couple of years. I just saw Land of the Dead and found it quite entertaining. While there are plenty of cheesy zombie flicks out there I found the following to actually be pretty decent movies. 28 days later (I know, some don't count this as a zombie movie) Dawn of the dead (remake), I thought this was a great movie, lots of zombie foo (TM, used by permission of Joe Bob Briggs ) it really put me in the mood for some zombie gaming, if I could only find some AFMBE players around here. Land of the dead, interesting spin on the typical zombie movie, kind of a PA meets zombie flick. I'd like…

Can't concentrate on work today and could use a good laugh, so here's a challenge game inspired by the CyberComedy: Is It Possible? Thread. One of the best methods of spoofing a genre is to take the conventions/cliches of the genre and push them to their (ill)logical extremes. A few examples, borrowed from Neil Stevenson's Snowcrash: Convention: Corporations run everything. Comedic Extreme: Everything is a franchise. The church on the corner is The Reverend Wayne's Pearly Gates #4672; the subdivision where a character lives is The Mews At Windsor Place #563,434; etc. Convention: Japan rules the world and the Yen is the global currency. Co…
