I'm sure this is a subject that has probably been rehashed again and again on these boards, but please indulge a newbie's stupid questions. :-) My GM just threw an agent team at us which included a guy with an entangle gun. That one guy had the good guys all messed up for most of the combat. Only after we eliminated him were we able to get the upper-hand. The trouble we had started me thinking. Isn't Entangle somewhat over-powered in this system? If you give a squad of agents entangle guns (OAF, area effect, takes no damage), with a little bit of offensive support, couldn't they take down virtually any team of heroes? Maybe the problem is that out of a…

If I use a movement costing 2 points per increment as a movement form costing one point per increment, how is the movement calculated? Say for instance, I have the following: Flight 7", 0 END (+1/2), Usable as Gliding (+1/4) for 24 AP. How many inches of Gliding would that convert to?

Howdy! Can you entangle someone who is protected by a force wall? If you are behind a force wall can you use your entangle attack agianst a foe?

I was going to ask how to build the Hitchhiker's Guide in Hero, but I realised that such a build would also be applicable for the "usually accurate" Wikipedia. How would you build those two things?

Are there any rules for foot chases in the system? If not, I'd like your houserules regarding this idea. I think it would also make a nice Digital Hero article.

Hello. I've seen a lot of posts where Power Skill is mentioned, and there isn't much about it in the book, so until TUS comes along... Here's some suggested house rules for Power Skill designed to make it useful and interesting without it being a free VPP. 1. You can not buy power skill beyond 14- when using the power at full strength (i.e. including the penalties for active points but no other penalties). 2. You can't buy PSLs for Power skill. 3. If you fail a PS roll then all subsequent rolls this scene/session/day are at a cumulative -2 penalty. 4. If you want to add an advantage or remove a limitation temporarily with the PS then you can do…

What is the best way to simulate the fact that a Green Lantern ring is capable of replicating any power in the HERO SYSTEM book at the wielders whim? I also am curious how it would any effect such as when Guy Gardner making women to give him back massage or new JLA where the GL creates popcorn for his team mate to eat.

HOw would you build a power that stops Resurrection (or regrowth of limbs with Healing for that matter)? For instance, if Resurrection were common(ish) but there were some weapons/demons/attacks that prevented its use, how would you model it? Basically I am thinking of something like a Stormbringer attack that eats the soul, or a demon who claims the soul and absorbs it, or simply a magical attack that is so vicious you cannot regrow organs/limbs lost to it.

I am tring to make a Siesmic Shock power that knocks everone down in an Explosion Area of Effect. The Character stamps his foot and everone in a radius who is standing on the ground would have to roll DEX to remain standing. I think this is a takedown manuever made AOE, but I cannot seem to make it inside a MP. Would this be legal? Steve

I bought Champions back in 1983(ish) when it was the box set with two books, the ever present Rosie's map and the little yellow six siders which is now commonly referred to as the 3rd Ed. When I crack that rules book to the powers section and peruse the description of Teleport, it the same rules on Noncombat movement as my copy of 5er does. It takes an extra phase to go the extra distance and you suffer half DCV and 0 OCV during that phase and until your next combat phase. I was, maybe, 12 at the time, and didn't ponder the rule, and I've accepted it as rote ever since that time. I was running a FtF game on Friday night, and the player of the Teleporting Dark Avenger…

Let us say that for a campaign I'm working on, some Detects are known in-game to be reasonably common, mainly detecting if a creature is a certain thing. Since members of these detectable groups know there are many out there who could easily sense them, some of them want to hide from this Detect. I think Invisibility versus the type of Detect would work, but I was looking for other opinions, confirmation that I'm thinking about the problem right, that sort of thing. To help, here's an example: Mordhek is a vampire. He knows that there are vampire hunters who can sense vampires (these vampire hunters have Detect: Vampires). Since Mordhek is a most consummate ninja, …

Is the Style Disadvantage for martial arts really a disadvantage when all your superpowered martial artists look and feel the same? One uses capoeria, one aikido and two ninjitsu, but all have two strikes, Block and Dodge, and one other maneuver. When I started having those feelings, I started looking for ways to make different martial arts styles /feel/ different. I reread descriptions of building Mongoose Style and Bandarian Kickboxing, and found those two depicted how I wanted martial arts to feel. Both styles had few maneuvers, but based on the selection(or design), one was about speed and slipperyness, the other brute strength and power. Th…

A player in my bi-monthly supers game has requested a power that I, frankly, don't know how to build. He's a robot with a built-in parachute, and he wants to be able to use it as a drag chute to slow down or stop his character's motion from knockbacks and other situations where he's not in control over his own speed. Specifically, he's requested that it have greater effect the further he's being knocked back. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, Ehreval

Here's the idea; I have this freeze gun. If I shoot it at a characters it acts like a stun only energy blast, if I shoot it at liquids it freezes them (transform or change environment) and if I shoot it at solid inanimate objects it makes them brittle (maybe a small continuing uncontrolled supress of BODY and PD). So I build it as a multipower. Cool. Now I shoot this freeze ray at what I think is a character, using the first slot. Only it isn't a character it is an animated pool of water a villain has shambling towards me. Now in theory the shot is wasted: in fact the attack is the same whatever the target; the MP is just there to define differnt effect on …

In the Champions game I'm running, VIPER first stole a rare lizard froma zoo fundraiser. I described the lizard as having a mild paralyzing poison/venom (I used the terms interchanably). Since then, the heros' contact has been drugged and is in the hospital in a coma. The toxicology report stated that the poison used was based on the lizard's poison/venom. Since the lizard is rare, they do not have a supply of anti-venom, and needs a sample of the venom to create one. What I'm looking for from assembled Herodom is a good name for the lizard and of course the villian created by VIPER using the recombinate DNA technology.

Generally, I agree with Steve's answers in the Hero System 5th Ed Rules Questions and even when I don't, I generally defer to house rules of the campaign. However, this time I felt torn enough between whether to agree or disagree to ask what other's felt about it. Now, specifically, in answer to MikeyMitchell's question about being hit by multiple Drain attacks by different people (trying to get this exactly) Steve said:

It's a common maneuver of stretchy heroes in comics to grab many opponents at once or grab huge monsters. But in HERO you can only sweep-grab as many enemies as you have limbs, and a normal-sized human can't grab huge critters. So, how to build this ability? Keep it in mind that I just don't like the Entangle solution for stretchy-guy grabs that appears in UNTIL Superpowers Database, I much prefer to simply buy extra STR with "Only to Grab" Limitation. Should I just add Area Effect to the Extra STR? Or to the character's full STR? Shoud I buy the Area Effect as a Naked Advantage? Is there other ways? Thanks in advance. EDIT: I realize that Extra L…

First off I'de like to say greetings to everyone. I just found this site and information and I've been playing for 10 years. I still use the old books and am not sure on how some things are built. Right now I'm running a fantasy genre champions game but in the Forgotten Realms D&D universe. I was curious as to how a Ressurection power was built in Champions. I built it several ways, a Major Transformation 'Dead to Alive',and a Summon Spirit (this is hard to pay for cause you don't know how many points the person your raising is). I was curious if the new books or some other GM's out there could help me with this. I'de like to put this spell in one of my players…

Kicking some ideas around...a couple of conected grumbles... You may have spotted me ranting about how expensive stretching is. I noted the other day the 'cost' of being big in Hero (Size Templates 5ER 574-575) Once you get to 'gargantuan' the cost of stretching exceeds everything else, and long before that it would be far cheaper to buy growth as a power rather than simulate enormous size with individual powers. Frankly I think giant characters are really rather difficult to do properly in Hero. The size templates do not, for example, include area effect for strength: at 5 doublings you would have a fist about 15 feet across: larger than a hex, and your foot…

Can someone tell me if the Limitation Extra Time (Regeneration Only) replaces the need to add the Self Only Limitation to the Regeneration version of Healing? I don't have the Revised 5th Edition (can't afford it yet), but I do have the updated Hero Designer with this opition in it. Thanks.
