Ok, I understand Elemental control (everything for half can-be used at the same time), and multipower (everything for a tenth but only one at a time) Could someone explain Variable Power Pool? I've seen it listed on the boards a few times but I'm working off the Sidekick rules book. It doesn't talk about VPP. I'm guessing it's just a bank of Active points that you can reassign all willy-nilly for different powers. Are their restrictions? How fast can you change from one power set to the another? Do you have to pre-determine powers at character creation? Any help would be great. Thanks, -Peace

Consider this power set: Quantum Sense: Detect Physical Objects, Energy and Magic 13- (no Sense Group), Discriminatory, Increased Arc Of Perception (360 Degrees), Range, Sense, Targeting (47 Active Points); Sense Affected As Cosmic and Mystic Sense Groups (-1/4) Danger Awareness: Danger Sense (immediate vicinity, any danger, Function as a Sense) (32 Active Points); Sense Affected As Cosmic and Mystic Sense Groups (-1/4) 13- Combat Awareness: (Total: 42 Active Cost, 34 Real Cost) +4 with All Combat (32 Active Points); Power Does Not Work If Cosmic or Mystic Sense Groups are Flashed (-1/4) (Real Cost: 26), plus Defense Maneuver I-IV (10 Active Points); Pow…

I was prowling around on Fitz's website, and decided to take a look at his DnD House Rules. Many of them are very HERO influenced, and I thought I would point out his idea for Languages. You can find it here. What do you think of it? Specifically, I'm referring to the +1 for Besic Literacy, +2 for High Literacy. Now, in a setting where literacy is assumed (most modern), you could skip the first level, and simply have +1 for "Highly Literate". As a way of handling skills, it's close enough to the official way of doing it that the explanations by each level only serve to make it easier to understand, without adding any complexity. Thoughts?

As several of you have requested, I am going to be adding a "Distinctive Features" list to the Master Lists. If anyone has any suggestions for things to include, please post them to this thread. So far I have the following: Albino Dwarf Fidgety; Can’t Stand Still Corona When Powers Are Used Exudes Cold/Hot Feels Cold/Hot To The Touch Glowing Missing an Eye Missing a Limb Obvious Superhuman Psychic/Mystic Aura Overwhelming Aura of Self-Confidence Static Shock on Skin-to-Skin Contact Tangible Sensuality Uniform Unusual Hair Color Unusual Eye Color Walks With A Limp

Ki-rin: "Was the change from 4th Ed to 5th Ed that allows an NND to do Body a Good, Neutral, or Bad Thing?" and "Is the Ad "Does Body" (+1) properly costed game balance wise in 5ed?" That seems like a good topic, or these seem like two naturally entwined topics, to be included in this thread. Related and on-topic issues for this thread would include Penetrating, Killing, Autofire, and all sorts of nasty attacks versus Power Defence. Plunging the dagger in the heart, disregarding the steel or the steel-hard skin in the way, via any mechanic you can imagine - let's hear the whole gory list, and your ideas. This is my first thread. I'd really love it if discus…

In some other roleplaying system they have the mechanic of taking your 20, which is to say the PC spends as much time as it takes to get a skill correct. This can only be done in non-combat, low-pressure situations. The player is assume to have rolled the best skill check possible which is a 20 on their one die, when the PC does this. Is there a similar animal living in Hero anywhere? Also in this other roleplaying system they have the mechanic of taking your 10, which is to say the PC takes a little time to get a skill done at a median level. This is usually done by experts who know that their high skill level is good enough for the situati…

I know Steve never explains the game balance philosophy behind his rulings, so could some more expert veteran Herophile kindly explain me why a Side Effect that always occurs the same way if power is used (such as an Aid that causes a character to become Enraged, an Attack Power that causes Stun loss, or an Armor that causes penalties to DCV and DEX rolls) must always have (because of the way modifiers to Side Effect are applied) Major severity to be worth points ?? I know Minor Side Effects might be theoretically abused by choosing very trivial effects, but it also seems to me that a 15 AP deleterious side effect that always occurs when you use the power should deserve -…

Howdy! I had an idea for an winged charcter that would use the air combat tactic of flying out of the sun agianst her enemies. The tactic goes back to WWI where planes would essentially dive out of the sun, making them hard to see. Question is how to really represent that. How does this look: Invisibility to Sight Group , No Fringe, Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2), Invisibility ends after first attack (+1/2) (60 Active Points); Only while flying in the sun (-2)

Howdy all- I am relatively new to the Hero system. So far I like what I see, and have decided to add it to my gaming convention run events. I am pretty confident in running the event overall since I am an old hand at convention game mastering but I was wondering if there are those out there that would not mind taking a look at the Champions characters I am putting together for my event that I am running at Origins and giving me some feedback on the stats. I am going to be making them in Hero Designer ver 3 and could send the file, or I could export to another format if you would prefer. Please let me know either here or via email at rdowney1@yahoo.com, if yo…

One of my players has been trying to come up with an EM pulse-like power to shut down elecrical devices. We tried an entangle, suppress, SPD drain, dispel, and maybe 1 or 2 others I don't remember. This time he suggested a BODY drain. I was about to say no when I thought about it. It will work automatically against foci despite their DEF, but the active points in the BODY drain will return after a couple turns, thus reactivating the device without damaging it. Also, I could buy Power Defense for the devices, defined as EM shielding. This is something I never thought of, but seems to handle the power fairly well. The next question, however, is should I house-ru…

I finally read 5ER about buying megascale on senses and I'm not happy about the huge costs it incurs....fortunately I was once bitten by a radioactive rules weasel, so I want to use my weasel powers to get around the cost issue. So would this build cause you to spurt coke out your nose or is it "OK?".... Power: u Flight 5" REnd,Scalable,Megascale +4 (60) cost 6 on slot Megascale on sight group (+1/4) cost 5 points +15 Per on sight group Lim: only to counter Megascale sight penaltys (-1/2) cost 20 Normally I'd have to buy +4 1/4 on sight group at 105 points just to see where I'm going. I also want a basic Mega-range sight so I can see stuff a few KM's awa…

I have, and several of my friends, have been playing Hero system since the old 1st Ed Champions days. Recently we have been discussing rules that have changed over the years. Or at least rules that we remember being different long ago. The trouble is we can't really figure out when they changed (what edition) or if we are just remembering them wrong. 1) There used to be a rule that said in the event of a tie that the defender won grab and takeaway attempts. The rule now seems to be that the tie goes to the attacker. When did this rule change, or was it always this way? 2) It seems to me that there used to be a rule that performing a half-move before attacking wa…

I was updating some of my old characters from 4th edition and came across one I'm not sure what to do with. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure how it worked in 4th, as I was using Metacreator when I wrote him up. Here is the general idea: The character has a Multipower with several slots. Each slot has a Limited Advantage; the Advantage only applied in specific conditions. Specifically, the character's Multipower slots all have Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2) through a Focus (OAF; -1). Without the Focus, he can still use the Multipower, but must pay END. With the Focus, there is no END cost for anything. My question is, how do I build this in 5th Edition? I've …

I just finished watching an episode of Teen Titans where Cyborg was stuck in the past fighting dozens of green badguys with a sword instead of his sonic blaster due to power consumption issues. He was taking down 3-4 badguys with every swing. How many seemed to be a result of how hard he swinged the sword as much as how accurately. He did not appear to be making a conscious decision on how many badguys he was trying to take down with each swing. Current Sweep rules don't really address this type of situation very well. The more common example of this has Cyborg or other Titans (or Justice Leaguers for that matter) fighting with similar methods vs. robots or alien…

Okay a character of mine is a master archer (Huzah) I am working on his bow The arrowheads can be thrown instead of shot Currently I am doing this, all slots are OIF Most slots are VarLim (Requires -1/2) the VarLim list is this OAF (-1/2): The cost is reduced based on the OIF Range Based on Str, Gesture (throwing movement) or restrainable (Debatable which is more appropriate) No Range (If he is bound he could target the next square with a weak throw depending on where he is bound)

I was looking through the Vehicle Sourcebook and saw the USS Iowa with a 10 Defense and a 35 Body. That just seems....wrong to me. Some armor info: http://www.battleship.org/html/Articles/IowaClass/Armor.htm Regardless, there is NO WAY the Knox class of frigates should have the same Defense, not even close, IMNSHO. Stay with me here. Bob and his buddy are in T-80 tanks (8d6 RKA, 19 Def) shooting at the USS Iowa (9d6 RKA, 10 Def). They are all in range and we assume everything hits for simplicity sake. The Iowa's guns are Armor Piercing, the T-80's is not. But, the T-80 has hardened defense, and the Iowa does not, so that is a wash. Bob and his…

After reading 'Why does the USS Iowa only have a 10 Defense?' thread I have to ask. How can an Napoleonic Era frigate fire a broadside every turn (@12 seconds)? At least according to the Vehicle Sourcebook. As I recall, a frigate that could fire three broadsides in five MINUTES was considered 'Crack'. Are we sacrificing realism to speed up the game?

Over in the Rules Question forum, I asked Steve the following question: He directed me here for the second part, as I suspected he would, so I'm turning the question over to you now. Details: Batman-esque character is donating xp regularly to the creation of his Base and uberComputer. He would like to have a utility belt pocket size device through which he can keep contact with said uberComputer, receiving alerts and having it perform some specific functions at his request (lock/unlock the base doors remotely, search the criminal database for a certian m.o., etc.). How would I build said device? Expensive and inexpensive ideas are equally welcome, as long as the…

I need some help designing a new power. The ability to animate a person's shadow. The person would lose their shadow for the duration of the power. The shadow would be under the control of the animator. I am not sure exactly what powers/abilities the shadow will have yet. It may have the same powers of the person, or generic shadow powers. Right now I am leaning towards a summons linked w/a minor transform (only lose the shadow for the duration of the power and if the shadow is defeated it returns to the person). Right now I am looking at this as a very major ability for a character so the power cost is not my main concern...yet. Thoughts, Ideas?

Sorry if this is answered somewhere, I did not see it Under entangle there is a limitation that is for only arms or legs (Set effect) 1) Is it decided wether it will effect the arms or legs during play or character creation? If it is during Character Creation then could you please move this thread over to the Hero Discusion boards so that a conversation on what an appropriate value for a lesser version changable in play would be valued at? (My gut says -1/2)

The character is a super sniper, I want him to be able to target with his rifle from miles away. How do I "build" it? and what is the distance a "real" sniper could shoot a target? thanks

Not a professional-release game (unless it's really good...) but for my "cyber ninja pirates in space" game, I think I will "force" myself to create a new ruleset which is entirely built on HERO in such a way that the players can very easily pick it up but so that it is abstracted and a "beer and pretzels" game. And I will also use this as a test of the ideas RDU Neil and others and I have batted around. I will start with explicit Axioms (obviously the foremost will simply be "Must use HERO as he basis for all rules and mechanics"). Then I will build a set of basic mechanics. Then I will build rules and guidelines. And then we'll see how the play experience i…

How do you model in HERO a character who is spectacularly, unbelievably BAD at a skill? Like Akane Tendo's cooking, which fails in amazing, spectacular and outright dangerous ways and is a menace to anyone who eats it (inlcuding herself)? And how do you model the fact that the character, despite their abysmal skills, keeps on trying and forcing their friends and loved ones to ednure their efforts? There are other examples of such spectacular incompetence, such as putting Azumanga Daioh's Yukari Tanazkui-sensei behind the wheel of a motor vehicle.
