My group started The Island of Dr Destroyer recently, 6E rules using Champions Complete as our primary source. I'm running it, but my usual GMing approach is rules-light (Tunnels & Trolls , for example) and much hand-waving, whereas I'm hoping to make better use of the Hero mechanics. One of my players who is, to say the least, considerably more technically minded than I asked a question about sustained Flight for his character and I'm hoping that more experienced brains can offer an answer or point me in the right direction. The character was designed using the Champions Character Creation Cards and his flight is part of a Multipower: Not urg…

Hi, I have bought 6D6 hand attack based upon ego combat value for a character. I also bought 20 strength based upon ego combat value for the character. When the character attack with the powers it's an ECV attack vs the target's ECV. Let's say the target aborts to a block. Would they roll their OCV vs my OCV, their OCV vs my ECV, or do they fail to block? My inclination is that it would be their OCV vs my ECV. It's still an attack. A block is my mind an attack skill check pitting attack stat vs attack stat. Looking for feedback.

I have a few things saved off from the old Red October BBS and Hero mailing list from decades ago that I will post here. Others might have some as well. First up: You know you're a Hero player when... (names of the people who came up with them included -- some real blasts from the past here) ...When you ask everyone you meet how many "Total Points" they are "built on". ...When you refer to your glasses as your "OIF Focus for Enhanced Normal Sight".- Capt. Spith... ...Instead of covering a friends eyes and saying "Guess Who?" you say "Make a perception roll" ...During a snowball fight, you start cataloging who has a high DEX a…

I'm looking to build a villain who uses a 5d6 Blast attack. Not very effective. However, in the next attack phase, his power starts charging up and he gets to add +3d6 for a total of 8d6 Blast. The following phase is an additional +3d6 for a total of 11d6 and finally the next phase culminates in +3d6 for a total of 14d6. At this point, the power is spent and it drops back down to 5d6, which starts the powering up cycle again. How would you build this? Note: the power builds up regardless of whether the blast hits or causes stun damage.

A player in the campaign asked, "Does an area effect attack also hit any accessible foci that the target may be holding, such as a sword or blaster?" What about Inaccessible foci?

Diffuse Body Base cost: 3 per level Costs END: yes Benefit: +1 PD/ED; +1 to Contortionist rolls Side Effect: for every 2 levels of Diffuse Body, the character's mass is reduced 50%. (1 level would basically be 70%, so the net mass progression in percent would be 70, 50, 35, 25, 18, 13, 9, 6,....) No increased KB; the diffuse form absorbs the impact. Also, this form can never pass through solid objects. The costing is largely based on applying Costs END Every Phase to the base costs of the benefit. Not sure if the defense should be normal or resistant; if normal is the default, then Resistant would be a legal opt…

Haven't played HERO since 3rd/4th edition era, but thinking about picking it back up. Is it worthwhile to upgrade to 6th? What kind of improvements have been made to the game? How different are the mechanics? (If there is already a Topic on this, apologies.)

Building a Shrink Ray !! This would be a device, not to be used to fight crime, but to shrink people down to the size of tiny ants, Bwahahahaha!! Ahem. Anyway, What i mean is, yes, you would be small, but not with human sized strength, but where lifting a can of soda would be impossible and you could barely use a sewing needle as a sword. How would Hero simulate this?

Just looking to see how others would write up a Hand of Glory, the mythological device made of a dead man's hand with a lit candle, which, according to folklore, can open all doors and paralyze any person looking at it. How would that look in game terms?

As the title indicates, I am a 5th Edition Revised player. When I started playing Hero back in the Champions 1st ed era, End cost was 1 End per 5 points. This was later changed to 1 End per 10 points. For me I always go back to the 1 to 5 ratio for my games. I personally find it easier to use and easier to teach the game. I don't know if there is any actual difference in the end, but it seems so to me. Anyone else with similar experiences?

I've got a robot that can create a bright light attack but I'm not sure how to build it. It can create a bright light which originates from it's eyes and is 180 degrees in radius up to about 30 feet out (just throwing out a number, could be shorter or longer) but no further back than its eyes, hence 180'. Probably a Flash Attack. How would you build the area attack aspect of it?

So, philosophical game-design questions. (and my first take at answers, but I'm really looking for ideas, so please, chime in) What is a Skill? Well, I guess a skill is something that anyone might be able to perform, given training, but that they well might have no chance of performing without some sort of training. As opposed to an innate ability which just anyone can do, just by being; or an innate talent that only some gifted sorts can use. Obviously as opposed to a 'power.' If you could divide very possible skill into six (or pick an arbitrary number you think would work better) categories, of roughly equal number/value/importance across genres, what mig…

Here's the scenario: a character has an Images power that allows them to create convincing sight and sound illusions. He is a nebbish little guy with a 10 PRE and no real combat skills, so when a gang of thugs is threatening to rough him up, he decides to make an illusion of a supernatural creature that has been terrorizing the city to scare them off. The question is, how much PRE does the illusion get for purposes of scaring off the thugs? How would you handle this?

Alright, I have an idea for a character who is loosely inspired by the various Spder-Man symbiotes (only the symbiote is a shoggoth), Here's my issue. What I am doing is buying the symbiote as a Follower, which has numerous "usable by other" powers that only apply to whoever the symbiote has engulfed. That's not difficult. What I am having a problem with is the engulfing part. Desolidification and Clinging, all with Concentration (0 DCV), I guess. But, when the character is hit by an attack, the follower is also hit, since he's literally wearing the follower. How do I do this? So that some of the damage goes to the STUN and BODY of the …

I do very much enjoy building characters, and I like for them to be well fleshed out with sufficient detail in their backgrounds to give them both adequate personality and various ways they could work within a game. I also like to make characters that are usable both as player characters and NPCs as the case may be. Finally I do like to share. I intend to use this thread to post any fully developed Hero System characters I have built or will build in the future. Anything posted here will have full writeups and have appropriate background skills. I tend to create both fantasy and superhero characters, so these will be a mix of both. Anyone is free to use any of…

Something that's never been clear to me... Let's assign a Summon 500 point critter (100 points), x2 critters. So it's 105 points, 10 END. My take is I can, with one action, summon 2 critters. Question is: what's the END cost to do so, 10 for the whole shebang, or 20...10 for each? Similarly with Duplication. Case 1: I buy x2 duplicates but NOT Rapid Duplication. I spend the full phase to create both of em. 10 END or 20 END? Case 2: I buy x2 duplicates and Rapid Duplication...so it's now up to 131 active, so technically it's 13 END. So if I want to summon them both as a half phase action, what's the END cost, 13 or 26? …

Hello Herodom, As the title says, help me to understand how to add DC to advantages Powers particularly weapons in Heroic. My group never really use these rules but I would like to learn these now. Btw I’m using 6th. Now understand the basics such as how to add DC from STR min to unadvantaged Powers. I.e if my guard has 13 STR and is wielding a dagger STR min 8 1D6-1 (2DC) he can add 1 DC to increase for a total of 1D6 (3DC). Now if the dagger is AP can he add any DC? Add how much if the guardsman has 15 STR?

My son wants to play as an Aisawa clone and I have been struggling with his Erasure power. Right now I am working off a continuing Dispelled with LoS, not vs mechanical based powers, expanded effect x8 for total coverage. Also I made his Capture Bands as TK with a physical manifestation. Any advise or ideas.

Hi, everyone. I've been trying to port a character from V&V who had Gravity Control into the Hero System. Gravity Control, as in increasing and decreasing its its hold on a target. This is what I have so far based on insight from 6th Edition Star Hero: Gravity Control: Telekinesis (22 STR), Area Of Effect (4m Radius; +1/4), Attack Versus Alternate Defense (make a STR vs STR Roll w/o Density Increase added, at least 2 pts innate Resistant PD for each 5 pts of STR subjected to, defenses based on anti-gravity or Flight with No Gravity Modifier; All Or Nothing; +1) (74 Active Points); Only To Pull Objects Straight Down To Earth Or Hold Them Off The Ground (-1) …

Recently there was another discussion on Mental Powers, and while this topic touches on that, it's not the same. Mental powers work until a breakout roll succeeds. Adjustment powers fade over time. Damage heals with Recovery (or Regeneration). Entangles are escaped with applied STR. Transforms can end when a condition is met. Constant powers stop when END isn't paid. That's six ways to end the effectiveness of an opposing power, each with its own use and circumstances. Why are they different mechanics - why not use the same one everywhere? Not to say that any one of these are better than the rest. Why not give every ef…

Let me preface this by saying I know that there have been changes from 5e to 6e that make this... problematic. Also that I find using Drain to penalize Characteristics and such to be clunky. I'm trying to write up a "curse"-type power build. Do any of you have a more elegant way of doing "I subtract 3 from that score right there", where "that score" might be Charm, or Stealth, or heck, all PRE rolls or even all Characteristic or skill rolls? I'm starting to lean towards Change Environment, Long-Lasting, possibly with Usable As Attack. I understand how Transform might work, but it seems like you need at least Major Transform to pull it off, and why should I ha…

Is it ethically wrong to work your character in a way that takes the most advantage of the system? I'm not talking about spending 1 point to mega scale kill a planet, I mean Like spiderman having a IIF for his multipower webs with tons of charges? Is it wrong to use the system to avoid endurance costs and getting a discount on his MP with something that only rarely comes up ? In my case my DM asked me if getting screeching ( reach weapon) while being invisible was gaming the system or not. I felt it was not, but as I'm the guy planning on it, maybe I'm biased. This character would by no means be unbalanced for the table. Other players would for example have a…

It was suggested that maybe we create a thread for new people who are posting and especially for lurkers. So here is what I would like to suggest everyone post as an introduction: How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)? What was the first tabletop RPG you played? What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed? What are you currently playing/GMing? I hope this thread gets pinned.

So I have a conundrum. Looking thru 5th editions books and then through 6th editions I can find a lot on weapons being hit and damaged. But that is not what I am actually looking for. My question is if a very strong character uses a weapon regular weapon and the weapon is too weak to withstand their use, how do you calculate damage to the weapon. Normal human Saxon warrior is knocked flying and drops his great axe (2d6+1, 16 STR min, 8 BDY, 4 Def.). Extremely overpowered and smart for example purposes Troll (Str 80) picks up said great axe and hits warrior. Now you would think that at least the axe handle would shatter under the for…

Though usually a plot device, I have been thinking of making some villain underlings(that were empowered by the Master) that have Vulnerabilities that can be exploited by the Master Villain but only if a certain code/power sequence is used to activate it. Obviously the Master knows them but anyone who learns them can use them. Examples: 2x vs Mind Control but only if the command is phrased with "My dear(target name)" at the beginning 1-1/2 Damage from Energy Blasts linked to or coordinated with a Flash Attack. I am leaning toward making these 1/2 the regular value but I thought I would get some ot…
