So the brackets are being released as I type this. The local team (NMSU)...co-champs during the season, they said, and won their tournament...got a 12 seed. Quite good for a 1 bid league. And *the* seed for upset purposes...12's beat 5's with amazing frequency, 33%. By comparison, 13's beat 4's only 21% of the time, and 11's beat 6's only 37% of the time. The 12's are frequently underseeded, it looks like. In the 2nd round, the 12's are 9-3 against 13's...but also 13-29, 31% versus the 4 seed. Now there's some tweaks to this. The NCAA restructured things a few years ago. There's 4 play-in games; it's a 68 team tourney. What they did is the…

"Big Toys" Superdraft This draft focuses on things rather than characters. There is a single human character, and a maybe-close-to-human robot or android, and then a free option pick which could be a living character. The rest is stuff. All picks are exclusive. No restrictions on source material, other than currently living real people are not eligible to be drafted in any category, even the free option. Currently existing hardware is, however, permitted. The twelve things to be picked: one home base, which must be anchored to the ground or space-time or something. While it might be in a fixed orbit, or be disassembl…

Just heard on Facebook. Another giant of gaming is gone, after many years of health issues. I didn't know him personally, so someone else will have to do that bit.

Akira Takarada has passed away at the age of 87. This prolific actor is primarily known for his roles in science fiction films like The Last War, King Kong Escapes, and the Godzilla series. He was the male lead in the very first Godzilla film made back in 1954. Having had the honor of meeting him, he was very invested in getting to know his Western fans. He will be missed.

I'm surprised this wasn't posted earlier, but Madeleine Albright passed away a few days ago. I was going to put her obituary in the Political Thread, but she deserves her own thread. https://www.cnn.com/2022/03/23/politics/madeleine-albright-obituary/index.html

A bit premature? Maybe. But it looks like there will definitely probably be baseball at both the Major League and Minor League levels in 2021, so why not star the thread now? It's only 61 days until pitchers and catchers report....

Okay, as promised here’s the other side of the coin. Let’s say you’re looking for backround music for a gathering in the days before I-Pods and all those that came before or since. All you can use is a record player and you want a mix of songs from different artists and groups. What three soundtracks do you put on the turntable? (Previous restrictions and rules apply.) 1) Forrest Gump It’s got a nice selection of tunes from the ‘50’ thru the ‘70’s 2) The Big Chill The same but for the ‘60’s thru the ‘70’s 3) Empire Records And once again for the ‘80’s &’90’s

For various reasons, decided it was time to upgrade. The new box arrived early this afternoon. OK, awesome! Had the keyboard/mouse ready. Find the right video cable...oh, good, glad I bought a bunch of different ones a long time ago, this one will work. Fire it up. Joy, rapture, BOOT! Win 11 pro was pre-installed; I dislike the hassle of loading drivers. Great. Set up the main account. Wait. Holy Cats, it’s the Multiversity Superdraft! Multiverse stories are all the rage right now so let’s take a stab at creating our own. Variant timelines, alternate dimensions, unofficial retcons, Elseworlds, What if…? It’s time to populate your own multiverse movie. Ok, this one’s a little tricky, so listen up. You’re going to select one primary protagonist and four variants of that protagonist. You’re also going to select one antagonist and give them a crew of two. 1) Primary protagonist: Might be a hero, might be a villain, might be an NPC, up to you. When you select them, select which universe or reality they come from, t…

5 Favorite Albums 1 2

I was inspired by the 3 songs thread so let’s do this. What are your five favorite albums/ Greatest of all Time? I’m going to put in one rule here and if there’s a dispute I will hear all sides and then make the ruling. There are a great many wonderful soundtrack albums out there. But we will not be allowing ones like The Big Chill, Almost Famous or Forrest Gump that pick and choose individual songs from many artists and many albums. These must be either from one performer/band or one performance from many bands ie; Live Aid or Woodstock. My picks in no order are Harry Chapin- Greatest Hits Live The Band - The Last Waltz The Be…
